The second AfrAsia Bank Cape Wine Auction was held at Boschendal Wine Farm yesterday, and generated R10,5 million, exceeding its goal of monies to be raised at the prestigious event, which saw 34 wine estates offering very generous auction lots.
Bids could be made online, or in person at the Auction. Auction lots were donated by ‘Auction Ambassadors‘, with rare local and international wine collections, gourmet dinners, art, luxury cruises, and unique travel destinations. The Auction was preceded by a ‘Barrel Tasting & Preview‘ the evening before in what looked from photographs like a magical Dylan Lewis Sculpture Garden in Stellenbosch. Charities benefiting from the Auction are the Pebbles Project, the MAD Charity, and the Click Foundation, all focusing on eduction in the Winelands. A total of R7 million was raised last year.
Auction lots included a Vilafonte 10 year vertical, sold for R290000; the Swartland Revolution lot by Mullineux Wines and AA Badenhorst raised R300000; the Hamilton Russell lot went for R175000; Paul Cluver Wines’ ‘Godfather’ lot went for R550000!; the Port2Port and Saxenburg Wines lot achieved an astounding R600000!; Oneiric’s lot raised R150000; Thelema Wines’ lot raised R190000; Jordan Wines’ Synergy lot raised R200000; Ellerman House raised R450000; Klein Constantia’s lot generated R340000; Warwick Wine R300000; Glennelly Wines R300000; a ‘Young Guns’ lot by Chris Alheit went for R340000; a Mullineux and Leeu Family lot achieved R150000; Creation Wines raised R260000; Glen Carlou raised R 160000; a Dylan Lewis lot went for R225000; artist Lionel Smit’s work raised R525000; the La Motte lot contributed R120000; and the Vrede en Lust lot raised an astounding R800000! Iain Banner was the masterful auctioneer.
Joining Boschendal Executive Chef Christiaan Campbell was Chef Peter Tempelhoff and his team from The Greenhouse, the latter cooking with Green Eggs. Committe members of the South African Sommelier Association poured wines for the thirty guests. Erica and John Platter were the Honorary Auction Chairs.
Mike Ratcliffe from Warwick Wines, the auction team, members of The Cape Wine Auction Trust (Michael Jordaan, Ken Kinsey-Quick, Wendy Appelbaum, Siobhan Thompson, and Michael Ratcliffe), the generous artists and wine states, and even more generous bidders, should be saluted for the excellent AfrAsia Bank Cap Wine Auction success.
