Baby Vegetables premium produce from earth, delivers farm to table!

On a quick trip around Muizenberg over the weekend, my friend and Muizenberg resident Don Gloy introduced me to husband-and-wife and chef team Quinette and Valie Costea, who own Baby Vegetables, a farm to table baby vegetable delivery  service. 

I was given a pack of Baby Vegetables, which included baby beetroot, different baby carrot varieties, baby turnips, and spring onions.  A wide range of Baby Vegetables are available, and can be delivered weekly in the southern suburbs. The business card card I received has the pay-off line ‘Premium produce from earth. No frills. Just the best’.

Vali and Quinette have established themselves amongst local catering and restaurant chefs as suppliers of freshly picked vegetables. Vali is Romanian and Quinette is a local who studied cheffing at Warwick Chef School in Hermanus. They met when they worked in restaurants at various resorts in America, including at Beach Plum Inn in Martha’s Vineyard. They moved to Europe, and have taken on culinary projects in Romania and Greece. They created a cookbook with detailed instructions for staff.

Moving to South Africa, Vali initially struggled to obtain immigration status. Quinette worked at the Hout Bay Manor, while Vali started QuiV Food & Catering consultancy, and designed and baked cakes. More recently they created Baby Vegetables, with a clever logo of farm fork to dining fork (and spade to spoon) on their business card! Their mission is ‘to provide  the freshest, tastiest and innovatively presented Vegetables highlights their approach to cuisine. Not afraid of hard work and going the extra mile to satisfy their clientele, they add the personal touch and are always available to advise, discuss, encourage, and inspire both aspirant and experienced chefs’.

Produce offered by Baby Vegetables includes pea shoots, micro-herbs, wheatgrass, an extensive range of herbs, seven types of lettuce, potatoes, five varieties of onions, four types of tomatoes, four beetroots, eight mushroom varieties, four carrot types, pak choi, spinach, avocado, butternut, chili, garlic, green beans, peppers, sweet potato, baby corn, brinjals, fennel, kohlrabi, leeks, turnips, patty pan, baby marrow, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, cucumbers, artichokes, gem squash, mange tout, radish, lentils, and mixed sprouts.  Fruit varieties offered are apples, strawberries, pineapples, watermelon, peaches, pears, oranges, lemons, grapes, and bananas.

  • Orders are processed quickly, in that one should place them before 15h00, for delivery the next day. Deliveries are done on weekdays, in Muizenberg, Kalk Bay, Hout Bay, Constantia, Fish Hoek, Simon’s Town, and Steenberg.  In the future deliveries are expected to expand to include Sea Point.
