On Women’s Day tomorrow afternoon the second Divas Unite classic-meets-pop concert will be held, celebrating the special musical talents of women musicians and singers of our country. This year the concert will be held at GrandWest Arena, involving 62 musicians.
A unique aspect of the concert is the 45 member women-only Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, performing under the baton of Brandon Phillips. The only other man to perform on the stage is Katlego Maboe, the MC of the show, and a performer in his own right.
But it is the creme de la creme of the local women divas that will steal the show, with the following divas performing: Thembeka Mnguni, Blackbyrd singing trio, Rouchelle Liedemann inspirational singer, Kim Kallie singer and talent scout, jazz vocalist Adelia Douw, soprano Lynelle Kenned, soprano Magdalene Minnaar, singer and musical star Judy Page, singer and talent scout Bev Scott-Brown, and violinist Donné de Kock.
Thembeka Mnguni recently captured the hearts of South African TV audiences when she was selected as one of the finalists of The Voice SA. Recently acclaimed soprano Magdalene Minnaar was invited to share the stage with international superstar Josh Groban. In March this year TV presenter and soprano Lynelle Kenned walked away with a prestigious Fleur du Cap Award for her performance as Maria in ‘West Side Story’. Adelia Douw, the vivacious young jazz songstress from Cape Town, who won the Open Mic Jazz Competition last year, is another star in the making.
For the first time an up-and-coming young diva will join the established divas, selected from a series of three auditions for the Divas Unite Young Diva Singing Competition 2016, which was held at the V&A Waterfront in June. Selected from 40 finalists between the ages of 8 and 18 years was Dirja Lekas, who will perform with the nine runners-up.
The Divas Unite concert reflects the celebration of South Africa’s special wives, mothers, sisters, and daughters, as does Women’s Day, and has been organized by Barbara Lenhard of Opulent Living, the event organizer.
The concert starts at GrandWest Arena at 15h00 tomorrow 9 August, and tickets cost R180 – R220. Tickets can be bought at Computicket.
