The Sweet Service Award goes to Gumtree, the website that allows one to advertise furniture, electronic equipment, and a myriad of other products and services for free, with immediate reaction and action. We have advertised a number of furniture items in the past two days, and the response has been phenomenal. We have met such lovely ‘shoppers’, one of them being a reader of our Blog, and have been touched about how kind the shoppers have been to help each other in loading fridges, beds, headboards, and other items.
The Sour Service Award goes to the City of Cape Town, and its Ward 54 Councillor Jacques Weber, responsible for Sea Point, Fresnaye, Green Point, Mouille Point, Clifton, and half of Camps Bay. The Councillor recently celebrated his first anniversary in the ward, and bragged about all his achievements in the period. However, we have found him to be completely disinterested in a continued problem in Upper Fresnaye of street light outages one to two evenings per week, and of less frequent days of street lights being on during the day! The City appears unable to fix the streetlight problem, leaving our part of the suburb in unsafe darkness. The Councillor is largely focused on Sea Point, with little interest in and action on Fresnaye and Camps Bay. Despite claims that he is in Fresnaye regularly, it is clear that he isn’t, given the dreadful state of disrepair created by construction companies in damaging our roads in the suburb. Pavements which have been dug up to lay fibre optic cables for an Internet upgrade are a shambles. The pavements have not been retarred, dug-up soil has been placed in the streets, meaning that locals cannot use the pavements, and that two cars cannot drive in two lanes of many of the streets! Councillor Weber has a small band of groupies, always the same ones, including Woolworths’ Mark Davids (Weber is his only Facebook Friend!), who defend the Councillor as soon as one reports a problem in the suburb, and are rude and disparaging of those lodging complaints on Social Media, without any reaction from or reprimand by Weber. As Weber does not react to our pleas for help re the street lights, I have more recently included the Mayor in our Tweets, which has clearly irritated Weber greatly, now childishly referring me to the Mayor for all the problems we experience in and report to him about his constituency!
