Kerry Kilpin of both Tryn and Bistro Sixteen82 Restaurants at Steenberg is one of our 2022 Top 10 Women Chefs, and has received this accolade for the second year in a row.

The Top 10 Women Chefs in Cape Town and the Winelands were announced on Women’s Day. Each winner receives a 1 litre tube of Rio Large Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

Steenberg Executive Chef Kerry vivaciously accepted the gift of a tube of Rio Largo Extra Virgin Olive Oil when I delivered it over the weekend, and she proudly shared that it is her favourite olive oil, using it in her restaurants. Kerry told me that business has picked up very nicely at the Steenberg Hotel and its Restaurants since Lockdown, and the full carpark on Saturday morning was testimony to that, with a big birthday celebration underway. Menu adaptations have been made, to the three course offerings as well as introducing lighter dishes for locals on the À la Carte menu.

Kerry comes from the Eastern Cape, and started her love for food preparation by baking cakes at school. She studied cheffing at Silwood Kitchen, and it was an internship and position at La Colombe that its Chef Frank Dangereux became her mentor, and she really fell in love with food and cooking. She joined Steenberg in 2014, first at Bistro Sixteen82 and from 2018 the then Catharina (now named Tryn) was added to her portfolio.

It was a lovely surprise to meet up again with new Tryn Assistant Manager Tammy Brown, whom I had not seen since the start of Lockdown. She kept me company while I had a cup of tea as well as their delicious chocolate mousse dessert, kindly comped by Tammy.
