It was announced today that La Colombe has been ranked 76th Best Restaurant in the World by The World’s 50 Best Restaurants. It is the third time that La Colombe has made it onto the prestigious list.
From Facebook we have seen that La Colombe Executive Chef Scot Kirton and his Head Chef James Gaag are heading to the USA, coincidentally it appears, as the World’s 50 Best Restaurant awards event is in New York on Monday 13 June. Today Restaurant, the organisers of the prestigious restaurant award, announced the restaurants ranked from 51 – 100 for 2016, and La Colombe is the only local restaurant on the list. In 2009 and 2010 La Colombe made the Top 50 list, when Chef Luke Dale-Roberts headed up the restaurant kitchen, taking La Colombe to the 12th rank in 2010.
When Chef Luke left La Colombe to open The Test Kitchen, Chef Scot took over at La Colombe, then still located at Constantia Uitsig. This is the first time that La Colombe has made the Top 100 list under the leadership of Chef Scot. The restaurant moved from Constantia Uitsig to Silvermist Wine Estate almost two years ago. A steady climb up the Top 100 list is predicted for the restaurant, Chef Scot having been recognised as Top Chef in our country at the Eat Out Awards last November. Chefs Scot and James are in the USA to seek new inspiration for La Colombe and the second restaurant they are opening in Spring, starting with meals at Alinea and Grace in Chicago, while Pastry Chef Glen Williams will be in Paris for the same.
The Tasting Room at Le Quartier Français has appeared on the Top 100 list most often of all local restaurants since the award was introduced. It appears to have dropped off the Top 100 list this year, not appearing on the 51 – 100 list today, after making 88th position last year.
The 51 – 100 list contained restaurants from 21 countries, the largest number being from the USA (9), followed by France (8). Mikla in Turkey jumped 40 places from 96 in 2015 to 56 this year. The Jane in Belgium is a new entry, starting off at 54h rank!
Restaurants which have dropped from the Top 50 List in 2015 to the 51 – 100 list this year are Mani (51), Per Sê (52), L’Astrance (57), Alain Ducasse Au Plaza Athénée (58), Aqua (63, down from 33 last year), Le Chateaubriand (74, down from 21 last year), and The French Laundry (86, down from 50 last year).
All eyes will be on Chef Luke and The Test Kitchen in New York on Monday evening, when it is just a matter of the rank that the restaurant achieves in the World’s 50 Best Restaurant Awards. Last year The Test Kitchen made the 28th position in the World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards, the third year in which it made the Top 100 ranking.
Congratulations go to Team La Colombe, and our good wishes to Team The Test Kitchen for a good ranking! Both restaurants confirm the leadership of Cape Town restaurants in our country.
