The Christoffel Hazenwinkel range of Hazendal wines launched earlier this month pays tribute to the first owner of the Stellenbosch wine estate, and its rich history. The labels for the wine range recently won a Gold Award at the 2017 Winemag Wine Label Design Awards.
First owner German immigrant Christoffel Hazenwinkel received 60 hectares of land from Governor Willem Adriaan van Der Stel in 1699, and named it Hazendal, literally meaning the valley of hares. From farming with cattle and grain initially, Hazenwinkel switched to vine farming.
The Winemag Wine Label Design Awards only awarded three Gold Awards out of 88 entries received, with the new Christoffel Hazenwinkel range winning one of them. The label design for the range of a red blend, a white blend, and a Rosé was designed by Cape Town creative agency Whitespace Creative. The Hazendal Christoffel Hazenwinkel wine range attracted my attention immediately at the awards event ten days ago, where it was recognized for its originality, execution, shelf appeal, and effective communication.
A media statement received from the agency explains the creative rationale of the wine label design, bringing Christoffel Hazenwinkel back to life as a man with hare-like characteristics, and dressed in outfits of the 1700s, a tribute of the current owners to the man who planted the first vines at Hazendal.
The character in the wine labels ‘loves food, wine, arts & culture, and living the good life’, and hence the Hazendal Christoffel Hazenwinkel range is suitable to drink with a group of friends, at dinners, book club meetings, and other social gatherings. The beautiful labels make the Hazendal wines a perfect gift. The label design for the range communicates the wine range as approachable, fun, and entertaining.
