New York City Restaurant overview!

imageWhilst dining at Le Bernardin in New York earlier this week, I received a copy of Zagat 2016 ‘New York City Restaurants’. Paging through it, I discovered some interesting information about the New York restaurant scene.

The Zagat Guide states that it contains information  about 2237 New York restaurants, of which 119 are new (and of which one-third serve American cuisine), 82 are new branches of existing restaurants, that it covers 136 neighbourhoods in New York, and 98 cuisine types in the city.

Zagat awards a number of accolades, and Le Bernardin received three out of its five: Top Food, Top Service, and Most Popular. It was my favorite of the five I ate at in this past week. Top Decor went to Four Seasons, and Shuko received the Top Newcomer award. Restaurants were listed by cuisine speciality, and Le Bernardin won best French, the only restaurant name I recognised out of the eighteen category winners.

Food trends identified by Zagat are :

#   Growth in Food Halls opening, including City Kitchen, Gansevoort Market, and Le District. A food hall by Chef Anthony Bourdain and by UrbanSpace Vanderbilt are set to open.

#.  Pre-Fixe dining is on the increase, with set menus.

#.  More new restaurants are opening in Battery Park City and the Financial District.

#   More vegetarian-centric menus are being added

#  Chicken is being added to menus, and more chicken-focused restaurants are opening.

#.  Brooklyn had a reduced visibility on the New York restaurant scene in the past year.

The most searched cuisine type on is Italian, followed by sushi, steak, pizza, and Mexican.

The Zagat Guide lists the ‘Most Popular’ restaurants in New York, but does not explain on which basis these are judged. Of the five I ate at, Le Bernardin is at number one, Daniel at number eleven, Eleven Madison Park at number 23, out of the fifty Most Popular. Per Sê was at number 36, and Eataly at number 38 (lunch planned for Monday).

The six restaurants I ate at were praised for:

#   Estela – unusual wine list top ten

#   Atera – best Cocktail Star

#   Le Bernardin – best for Seafood, best for French, connoisseur wine list top ten, connoisseur wine list

#  Eleven Madison Park – second best for American cuisine, fourth best for top service, connoisseur wine list.

#   Daniel – third best for top food, second best for decor, second best for top service, third best for French cuisine, connoisseur wine list

#   Aurora – garden/patio restaurant top ten.
