Sweet Service Award goes to Standard Bank; Sour Service Award goes to UCT Summer School!

The Sweet Service Award goes to Standard Bank Sea Point and its Manager Colleen Sampson, for assisting me in receiving my interest payment on a fixed deposit, due on the first of the month, which took until 4 January to be paid with the help of her intervention. She was feisty in dealing with her colleagues in the bank’s IT Department, demanding immediate rectification of the computer glitch which had caused the problem.

The Sour Service Award goes to the UCT Summer School, which appears to have been overwhelmed by the volume of the interest in its course offerings, particularly ‘The Magic of Mozart’, which ran over three evenings earlier this week. I had booked with the School’s Gloria and Yoemna last year, payment was taken, and confirmed.  I landed up in an endlessly long queue on Monday, which was actually for those paying for the first time. I was moved forward to the desk, handling both new ticket sales and ticket collections, causing a shambles. My name appeared on the pre-booked list but there was no ticket or seat allocated, which had to be organised. I was rudely told that I could not receive my tickets for the following two nights of the course. I called five times on Tuesday morning, there only being one working telephone line for the whole School. The UCT switchboard operator told me that they were receiving a high volume of calls, probably from other irritated bookers.  It was Bronwyn who finally assisted me, confirming a seat number I requested for the next two concerts, and the promise that Gloria would be at the concert, and would hand me my tickets.
