*.   South African exports into Africa are growing, says Wines of South Africa (WOSA) Africa head Matome Mbatha. Angola is taking 6 million liters of wine, of which more than 80% is sparkling wines, and predominantly JC le Roux, a brand they are ‘crazy about‘, Mbatha says. The 4,5 million liters of Nigeria’s imports from our country are mainly Pinotage and Merlot.

*   Chef Luke Dale-Roberts is to open a pop-up The Test Kitchen restaurant at The Saxon in Johannesburg on 21 January.  Chef Luke says he looks forward to testing the reaction of the Johannesburg market to his food. *. The new Helix ‘twist to open cork’ was launched at CapeWine 2015last week, a collaboration between Amorim cork and glass bottle manufacturer O-I. The bottles have been designed with an internal thread in its neck, and the cork is re-usable. Vinimark is the first user of the cork locally, for its Krone Chardonnay Pinot Noir 2015.

*   Bruce Jack of Flagstone Winery has launched Tributary, a Chenin Blanc made from 45-year old bush vines from Perdeberg. It will be sold in the UK for £30. It is the first Flagstone single variety use of Chenin Blanc, and Jack is confident that it will age for 20-30 years. Jack refers to Chenin Blanc as the ‘Cinderella’ variety, having been a workhouse and now is a ‘princess’!

*.  Domestic air fares have decreased in the past three years due to increased competition. Comair is the first to feel the effect of this decrease, its profit having declined by 17%. FlySafair is offering the lowest Domestic fares, at R499 one way between Johannesburg and Cape Town, a sustainable rate if the aircraft remain fully booked.

*.  Tokara is celebrating the tenth anniversary of its ‘Wine made Art’, 25 works of art created by students of the Marié Stander School of Art painting with Tokara Shiraz, and on show until the end of January. The art exhibition reflects Tokara owner GT Ferreira’s philosophy of good food, good wine, and good art giving a good life style. (received via media release from Manley Communications)
