La Colombe named Best Restaurant, Utopia Best Rooftop Restaurant in Africa in World Culinary Awards!

 

The Cape and therefore South Africa has garnered most top Restaurant awards in Africa at the World Culinary Awards 2022. The winners were announced in Dubai last night.

La Colombe in Constantia was named Africa’s Best Restaurant 2022, while Utopia Cape Town received the honour of being named Africa’s Best Rooftop Restaurant 2022. It is the second year running for both restaurants to win their respective categories. Continue reading →

SA restaurants awarded with stars for the first time in 2022 Eat Out Woolworths Restaurant Awards!

 

The Eat Out Restaurant Awards were held for the first time in three years today, an eagerly awaited event, given the impact of the Lockdown on the restaurant industry, and the change in the restaurant awards system, restaurants no longer ranked, but rated with 1, 2 or 3 stars.

It was a surprise to read a year ago that Eat Out would reintroduce its Awards this year, and that Abigail Donnelly was heading up the judging for the awards again, after an absence of a number of years. Continue reading →

#grateful for a cool day initially after rain overnight, becoming misty and then clearing up, becoming humid; for catching up on sleep, on writing blogposts for next week, and on walking outside, having been below my step quota in the past two days 😱; for trying out the new The Pottery which opened in Camps Bay this week, opposite the Pick n Pay and Woolies parking area, next to Dizzy’s; for bumping into two German tourists, on honeymoon and not very happy after their first week in Cape Town, she having been ill, and complaining about the overflowing litter bins and ‘rich’ Camps Bay not matching Ibiza Continue reading →

Corona Virus: Cancellations of events and temporary closures of Tourist venues and restaurants!

South Africans are still reeling after hearing the speech broadcast by President Cyril Ramaphosa yesterday evening in how the government is implementing measures from today onwards in combatting and containing the Corona Virus in our country, with drastic consequences for every one of us, including every business. New Restaurant openings in Cape Town and Winelands for 2019/2020 season slow down dramatically: October 2019!

The poor economic conditions in our country currently is manifesting in the very few new restaurants opening for the new summer season, most such new openings usually taking place in September. Where many new restaurants are opening, they are changing the name and concept of existing ones, rather than being brand new, or adding other restaurants in a restaurant group’s portfolio. 

Two exciting top-end restaurant openings are those of Exhibit A (owned by highly acclaimed Chef Rikku O’Donnchü and Chef Warwick King, who left Gåte restaurant earlier this year), opening in the city centre on 1 November; and of La Chêne at Leeu Estates in Franschhoek. Wolfgat Restaurant in Paternoster named Restaurant of the Year in the World Restaurant Awards!

A brand new international restaurant award system has named Wolfgat The Restaurant of the Year in the World Restaurant Awards, at a ceremony in Paris on Monday. The restaurant also won the award for Off-Map Destination. Three other top South African restaurants were nominated in categories of the World Restaurant Awards, from Cape Town, Somerset West, and Pretoria.  Continue reading →
