Diners Club Winelist Awards 2019 top Icon Award status goes to two Gauteng restaurants!

The most coveted 2019 Diners Club Winelist Award, its Icon Award, recognising restaurants that meet all the requirements of a Diamond Award, but also feature an extensive collection of international wines, as well as Reserve and vintage wines, having a sommelier on the floor, and having ‘a deep interest in wine curation’, were awarded to Restaurant Mosaic at the Orient Boutique Hotel in Pretoria, and the Saxon Hotel Villas & Spa in Johannesburg. Boudha Lounge serves authentic Cantonese cuisine in town, DJ René plays Tuesdays in October!

On Thursday I was invited to try the newish Boudha Lounge on Buiten Street, in the block between Loop and Long streets, offering Cantonese cuisine. Its marketing is managed by well-known Justin Paul Jansen, and his formula is to offer a restaurant and bar service to guests, as well as a DJ box, with a line-up of different DJs on different evenings. Sweet Service Award goes to Woolworths Camps Bay; Sour Service Award goes to Twelve Apostles Café!

The Sweet Service Award goes to Woolworths in Camps Bay, and its manager Gary Arendse, for dropping off a bag of oranges at my home, when I recommended to him that the new branch offer a larger fruit and vegetable supply, and break up a pocket of oranges so that one can buy them individually, for single customers like myself and like they do in the Waterfront. Vivaldi’s recomposed ‘Four Seasons’ performance at Zeitz MOCAA FOOD pairs seasonal Food, Wine, and Music at the majestic Zeitz MOCCA Museum!

In a first event of its kind, pairing food, wine, and music, the ‘Four Seasons’ by Vivaldi was recomposed by German-born UK composer Max Richter, and paired with wines and food to match the four different seasons covered in the composition, and took place in the majestic Zeitz MOCCA Museum art gallery last night. It was preceded by a ‘reimagined’ interpretation of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No 3, by Hans Roosenschoon. Continue reading →

SŸN Pop-Up Proudly South African in its Heritage Day Lunch Tasting Menu, presents a taste of what is to come when the new restaurant opens on 1 November!

Since my return from a three month trip to escape our winter, my number one newly-opened restaurant on my list to visit in the Cape was SŸN, the pop-up having opened whilst I was away, and headed by Chefs Rikku Ó’Donnchü and Warwick King, formerly of Gåte restaurant at Quoin Rock. The one-day special Heritage Day Menu (at R690) was the perfect opportunity to taste and see what these two creative chefs and their team have come up with since setting up on their own, initially as a Pop-up before they open their new restaurant on 1 November. Tintswalo Atlantic fired up to open its doors on 1 October, after devastating fire earlier this year!

On Tuesday evening I was fortunate to enjoy a stay-over at the beautifully located five-star Tintswalo Atlantic on the Atlantic Ocean, at the foot of Chapman’s Peak in Cape Town. The invitation was to try out the newly rebuilt hotel, of which the public rooms were destroyed by a devastating fire in February this year, with accommodation suites renovated, and to provide feedback and suggestions ahead of the reopening of Tintswalo Atlantic on 1 October. A number of media representatives, travel trade representatives, as well as past guests have been invited to experience the Hotel during September.  Continue reading →

Leeu Collection announces latest restaurant news at its flagship Leeu Estates property in Franshhoek!

Yesterday Leeu Collection announced two changes to its signature accommodation and spa property Leeu Estates, located on the outskirts of Franschhoek, with the opening of two restaurants on the estate.  The hospitality company continues with its concept of inviting top chefs to operate the food and beverage offerings at Leeu Collection properties, as was recently announced at its Lakes District Linthwaite House property in the UK. Restaurant Review: Lasai in Rio 74th Best in World, one Michelin star, too relaxed, excellent wine service, Tasting Menu lacks story!

Whilst visiting Rio de Janeiro at the end of August, I booked a table to eat at Lasai, the 74th Best Restaurant in the World, and one Michelin star rated. The name of the restaurant is Basque-Spanish, meaning relaxed or informal. It was too relaxed to my liking, preferring the 100th ranked Oteque in the same city. Continue reading →

Restaurant Review: Oteque (100th Best, one Michelin Star) Restaurant in Rio de Janeiro offers uncomplex Tasting Menu, with excellent wines!

On my recent trip through a number of South American countries, I booked to eat at each of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants operating in the cities I visited, and at which I was able to make a booking. Oteque in Rio de Janeiro was the final restaurant I ate at a day before my departure back to Cape Town. Oteque is number 100 on this eminent restaurant ranking list, and has a Michelin star, both achievements acquired within 18 months of the restaurant opening in Rio de Janeiro, its owner and Chef Alberto Landgraf having previously owned a restaurant in São Paulo.  I found it to be far better than Lasai restaurant, also in Rio de Janeiro, which is ranked 74th Best on the World’s 50 Best Restaurant, at which I had eaten two days prior.
