Somerset West


After a two week renovation period, the first branch of The Deli Coffee Co has opened, on Kloof Street, home to the former Melissa’s, ironically the first outlet which Melissa van Hoogstraten opened twenty years ago. Melissa’s has closed down all its company-owned stores, while most franchise stores have changed their names, and are continuing to operate, the company having gone into liquidation.  (more…)

The Sweet Service Award goes to Albourne Boutique House in Somerset West, and its Manager Glen, for his excellent service when I stayed over there recently. He was on duty until 23h00, allowed me to take a drink from their Bar, listened to my feedback about the disappointing meal at Giovanni’s in the Waterstone Centre, and was on duty at breakfast the next morning again. The winter rate is excellent value for money.

New restaurant openings in Cape Town and the Winelands appear to still be on the slow side. Coco Safar has opened its Coffee and Rooibos Emporium, with a Brewery, a coffee roastery, a Parisian-style Pâtisserie, and eatery in Sea Point, its first global launch, with New York to follow. 1987 is opening in Hertex in Gardens. Chef Oliver Cattermole has opened his Bovine restaurant in the former Dutch East space in Franschhoek. Chef Piet Huysentruyt of one Michelin Star Likoké restaurant in France has a pop-up at The Conservatory in Franschhoek at the end of the month. The Benguela Collection has opened Nom Nom in the former Benguela on Main space. Chef Bruce von Pressentin has opened his restaurant at Molenvliet in Banhoek, Stellenbosch.

On Tuesday I attended the first tasting of wines introduced by a winemaker and paired with a meal, at OpenWine, the tasting room representing a number of our country’s top wine brands in its Wale Street venue, at the invitation of co-owner Marta Gobbo. It is the first time that I have experienced their new format of wine tasting and food pairing. (more…)

 New restaurant openings in Cape Town and the Winelands appear to have almost ground to a halt, with a few chef changes. Janse & Co, owned by Chef Arno Janse van Rensburg, formerly of The Kitchen at Maison in Franschhoek, has opened on Kloof Street in Cape Town. CASA and the Revolving Restaurant have opened at The Ritz Hotel. SALT has opened at Paul Cluver wine estate in Elgin.

Big news is that talented top SA Chef Jean Delport of Benguela on Main in Somerset West is moving to the UK, staying in the Benguela Collection, opening its first restaurant at Leonardslee House & Gardens in April (photograph). This will mean a name, concept, and decor change for the Somerset West space, reopening as Nom Nom at the end of this month. Sister restaurant Moody Lagoon Restaurant has opened at Benguela Cove in Hermanus.

Restaurant Openings

#  Benguela on Main will close down on 12 January, with the departure of its Chef Jean Delport to a sister restaurant in the Benguela Collection being opened in the UK. The Somerset West space will undergo a decor change over two weeks, and will reopen as an everyday eatery and bakery called Nom Nom, with Chef Sebastian Smith heading up the kitchen .  (more…)

At the Eat Out Restaurant Awards 2017 this evening, held at GrandWest, some shock results stunned the restaurant industry. Eat Out continues its love affair with Chef Luke Dale-Roberts, with three of his four restaurants making the Top 10 Restaurant List, a spectacular achievement! The biggest shock was the spectacular slide of La Colombe, the restaurant which had all the opportunity to make the number one slot, but only making the seventh rank, a karmic reaction to the restaurant losing focus, opening too many restaurants, and getting involved in restaurant politics! It is not the first time that Eat Out has broken its own rules in choosing the chefs eligible for the previous Top 20 Restaurant lists (until 2016, The Pot Luck Club of Chef Luke Dale-Roberts having been snuck in, when it had only been open for 11 months and two weeks in 2014), and this year the same has happened in the Top 30 list for the first time. Three restaurants had not opened by 1 November 2016, the cut-off date for eligibility for the Awards this month, according to Eat Out’s own rules, yet are included in its shortlist! Missing from Eat Out’s List is JAN Restaurant in Nice, our country’s best South African restaurant, and awarded a Michelin-star in 2016 and in 2017!

Last week I wrote that Eat Out has announced that it is changing to a Top 30 Restaurant shortlist for its 2017 Awards. As is customary. I have tried to predict which top South African restaurants will make the Top 30 Restaurant shortlist, which should be announced by Eat Out shortly! I have struggled to find more than twenty worthy restaurants to make the Top 30  list! (more…)

South African chefs have done our country proud, with five of the ten semi-finalists in the S. Pellegrino Young Chef 2018 for the Africa – Middle East region coming from our country. Unbelievable is that three of the five local finalists are from The Restaurant at Waterkloof in Somerset West, a huge feather in the cap of Executive Chef Gregory Czarnecki, currently the S. Pellegrino Eat Out Chef of the Year!  (more…)
