Chefs Warehouse on Bree Street closes down, no presence in Heritage Square anymore!
After 8 years of opening Chefs Warehouse & Canteen on Bree Street, the second venue of Chef Liam Tomlin’s first Cape Town restaurant, and despite undergoing a name change more recently, the Tapas restaurant closed down yesterday.
The closure of Chefs Warehouse & Canteen Winebar & Pinchos brings to an end the presence of Chef Liam’s businesses in Heritage Square, having walked away from Local, his Lebanese restaurant Mazza, and La Cantina earlier this year. Continue reading →

Corona Lockdown Gratitude 🙏
#grateful for a day with a difference, getting up early to complete my work before leaving on a Safari Tour; for fetching my American clients Sonja and Mark; for Mike my favorite petrol attendant at BP President being at work and getting my car ready for the big trip; for the amazing Jeanette Loring allowing us to leave my clients’ suitcases with her in Gordon’s Bay 💙; for a smooth drive to Swellendam, where we had a lunch stop, finding that the Old Gaol had moved to the other end of Continue reading →
The Bailey new Bakery, Brasserie, and Bars on Bree Street, to be opened by Chef Liam Tomlin!
Now that Chef Liam Tomlin’s planned Russian restaurant in Moscow is unlikely to see the light of day for some time to come, he is putting all his energy into the renovations of an historic three-storey Tintswalo-owned building across the road from his first-ever Chefs Warehouse in Heritage Square, now called Pinchos.
It is said that Chef Liam is planning to leave or close Pinchos, the branch just not as successful in attracting customers as the Chefs Warehouses at Beau Constantia, Tintswalo, and Franschhoek. Tomlin has recently walked away from his Mazza and Local establishments in the former HQ, also located in Heritage Square.
March 2022 update: New Restaurants open in Cape Town and Winelands on the eve of winter!
Good restaurant trade in the past two months, and finally a good number of international tourists visiting Cape Town is leading to new restaurants having opened and planned to open in Cape Town and the Winelands, despite it being on the eve of Winter.
The biggest planned opening is that by Chef Liam Tomlin, who in April will open The Bailey, a three storey Brasserie, Bakery, and two Bars across the road from Heritage Square, apparently leaving all his restaurants on the other side of the road behind! Restaurant Artizian will open on Bree Street in April too.

Corona Gratitude 🙏
#Grateful for another warm beautiful sunny day; for the City of Cape Town truck driving past to clear out the green bins, the staff always happy, smiling, and waving, clearly loving their job; for being able to drive to town for the first time in almost two weeks; for being able to donate blood, hearing ads on radio requesting donors to come to donate, and with such fabulous service; for the most friendly and smiling service at The Olive Branch Deli at Lifestyle on Kloof; for the easy drive to and in town, with hardly a car on the road; for wine now allowed to be exported; for children now being allowed to see the other parent as per custody agreements; for getting a Discovery Vitality Gameboard play, with quite a nice point score; for Discovery having created a Whats App service allowing one to ask questions; for the Waterfront opening all its booms, not charging for parking; and for feeling happy and healthy. 🙏💙 Continue reading →

Restaurant Review: Biga Cafe, Bakery and Deli in Hermanus has ‘organic breads’, very rude owners!
Within 2 minutes of walking into Biga Café, Bakery, and Deli the rudeness of co-owner Hanli Carstenson came to the fore, and this continued from her, magnified by a rude departure ‘greeting‘ from fellow co-owner Glen Herringshaw, when I popped in there yesterday, after visiting the Hermanuspietersfontein market further down the street!
Biga (meaning sourdough starter in Italian, Hanli said) has been open since December, and has taken over the space of former Season, one of the few restaurants in Hermanus which I enjoyed eating at (mainly for its calf’s liver and mash). It has also taken over some of the space of Hornbill House, an art gallery, Continue reading →
