The pinnacle of fine-dining restaurant openings in Cape Town and the Winelands this year is that of Gåte restaurant at Quoin Rock in Stellenbosch, an interactive 16 course dining experience influenced by Molecular Gastronomy!  Other new restaurants which opened last month are the not-so-fine FYN and The Commissary, the fifth Luke Dale-Roberts restaurant. The Cowboys and Cooks Group has relaunched Sevruga, and opened Cowboys and Cooks Steakhouse & Bar, for owner Michael Townsend.  (more…)

Late last night I received an email from Chef Peter Tempelhoff, announcing that he is banning me from eating at his new FYN Restaurant. This is a reversal to what Tempelhoff told me at the Eat Out Awards ten days ago, in that I was welcome to eat at FYN, and that he does not discriminate against anyone, when I asked him directly! It can only signal that Tempelhoff is petrified that I might judge his new fine-dining restaurant, opening on Friday, to not be good enough! (more…)

I could not think it possible that the Eat Out Awards 2018 could be so refreshingly different, but it appears that new Head Judge Margot Janse has created a fresh new look at the restaurant judging criteria. Many of our top old-guard chefs took a severe beating at the Awards last night!  (more…)

For the third year running Jenny Handley Promotions has recognised top restaurants, and is an interesting predictor of Eat Out Awards, even though they do not always coincide. The 2019 Awards winners and Gourmet Guide were revealed on Monday. A total of 25 restaurants and their chefs were recognised with one, two or three Plate awards.  (more…)

This afternoon Eat Out announced its list of the Top 30 restaurants in our country for this year. The Top 20 restaurants will be revealed at the Awards ceremony on 18 November at GrandWest, and the Top 10 list within that ranking. There are some surprise inclusions and exclusions in this list.  (more…)

Yesterday I attended the launch of Yumcious Café in the DeVille Centre in Durbanville, the second restaurant of Chef Jenny Morris, her first one being the very successful Yumcious Café in the Cape Quarter.  (more…)

Every winter is a tough time for the restaurant industry. With the dip in Tourism due to the water shortage, and the early heavy winter rains, the restaurants in Cape Town and the Winelands are feeling the pinch, and many have closed down, even some on the iconic restaurant Bree Street, as well as in the Waterfront!  (more…)

Ever since I reviewed Chef Bertus Basson’s Spek & Bone dive of a restaurant in Stellenbosch in July last year, Basson has been on a mission to discredit me as a reviewer, not being man-enough to accept my honest feedback. Last week I popped in at his latest eatery, De Vrije Burger, a hamburger and ice cream joint, on Plein Street in Stellenbosch, the take-away outlet being far below the standard of his Eat Out Top 10 award stature! One wonders why he is scraping the barrel with cheap and nasty restaurants, when he started off with the top level Top 10 Overture restaurant, his first! Each new restaurant, of his five restaurants, is one level below the previously opened one in terms of quality!   (more…)

A year ago I posted here on my Blog that 2016 was the best year of my life. Looking back on 2017, I can echo this sentiment about 2017, surpassing what was already a fantastic 2016! The year was crowned by the publishing of my first book, and I plan to write two this year. I discovered my Self-Love, and now can truly stand on my own two feet!  (more…)

New restaurant openings in Cape Town and the Winelands are slowing down. Big news is that Chef Bertus Basson is no longer taking over the revolving restaurant on top of the Ritz Hotel in Sea Point, by ‘mutual agreement’! Instead he is opening a Burger restaurant in Stellenbosch!

The Ritz Hotel is promising an opening with a pop on 15 December, with the CASA Restaurant, a Veuve Clicquot Bar terrace, a Dom Pérignon Bar, and a Hennessy Cognac Cigar Lounge.

Last month saw the opening of Chefs Warehouse at Maison, Bilboa restaurant in Camps Bay, as well as Chinchilla Rooftop Café & Bar in Camps Bay, amongst others. BarDough by Jason and La Belle Bistro & Bakery in Mouille Point have closed down.

We update information about newly opened and closed restaurants continuously, and welcome such news.
