The Sweet Service Award goes to Melissa’s, and its Area Manager Mariska Slabbert, who has been extremely efficient and service-orientated in assisting me with the supply of fresh figs, arranging to leave some for me at their Paarl branch, when I recently drove through the town. She also assisted in sourcing stickers which the Kloof Street branch used to sell, but which had been sent to their Stellenbosch branch. She had them sent back, for me to collect, sending me a message that they had arrived.  (more…)

New restaurant openings in Cape Town and the Winelands appear to still be on the slow side. Coco Safar has opened its Coffee and Rooibos Emporium, with a Brewery, a coffee roastery, a Parisian-style Pâtisserie, and eatery in Sea Point, its first global launch, with New York to follow. 1987 is opening in Hertex in Gardens. Chef Oliver Cattermole has opened his Bovine restaurant in the former Dutch East space in Franschhoek. Chef Piet Huysentruyt of one Michelin Star Likoké restaurant in France has a pop-up at The Conservatory in Franschhoek at the end of the month. The Benguela Collection has opened Nom Nom in the former Benguela on Main space. Chef Bruce von Pressentin has opened his restaurant at Molenvliet in Banhoek, Stellenbosch.

Last Friday I was honoured to experience a preview of Coco Safar, which opens in Sea Point’s newly developed Artem, previously the Adelphi Centre, today. It houses the world’s first Botanical Coffee and Rooibos Brewery, the top coffee roastery in Africa, and is a top quality patisserie and chocolate supplier, bought to take away or enjoyed sitting down. An exciting coffee and Rooibos drinking Renaissance is being created at Coco Safar in Cape Town today, the culmination of a ten-year development journey. The decor style is inspired by Belle Epoque.
