Restaurant Review: Janse & Co next level dining in Cape Town, amazing attention to detail!

Last week my special friend Stuart Bailey and I ate at Janse & Co, the restaurant on Kloof Street, which Chef Arno Janse van Rensburg opened with his partner Liezl Odendaal two months ago. It reflects perfection in its decor, its service, and its menu, with beautifully presented dishes.  Continue reading →

Surprise news: Eat Out Editor Abigail Donnelly steps down after 12 years!

On Friday New Media Publishing shared the shock news that its Eat Out Editor and head judge Abigail Donnelly is stepping down and away from Eat Out at the end of this month, to concentrate solely on her involvement with TASTE magazine, published for Woolworths, in a new enlarged role of Foods Marketing Creative Manager in addition to her role as Food Editor of the magazine! This comes after a promise made by Eat Out last year that no change in the judging panel is to take place, justifying why it had kept the judging panel anonymous for the first time!  Continue reading →

‘Restaurant’ Review: Eat Out Top 10 Chef Bertus Basson’s De Vrije Burger below his stature, poor swop for The Ritz Revolving restaurant!

Ever since I reviewed Chef Bertus Basson’s Spek & Bone dive of a restaurant in Stellenbosch in July last year, Basson has been on a mission to discredit me as a reviewer, not being man-enough to accept my honest feedback. Last week I popped in at his latest eatery, De Vrije Burger, a hamburger and ice cream joint, on Plein Street in Stellenbosch, the take-away outlet being far below the standard of his Eat Out Top 10 award stature! One wonders why he is scraping the barrel with cheap and nasty restaurants, when he started off with the top level Top 10 Overture restaurant, his first! Each new restaurant, of his five restaurants, is one level below the previously opened one in terms of quality!   Continue reading →

Eat Out Restaurant Awards 2017: a prediction! The Luke and Liam Show!

It has become a tradition for me to predict the Top 10 Eat Out Restaurant Awards, held at GrandWest later today. This year the Top 10 Award prediction is particularly difficult, as Eat Out has changed its procedure yet again, announcing a Top 30 Finalist List for the Awards this year! Fascinating in this year’s awards will be to see Chefs Luke Dale-Roberts and Liam Tomlin go head-on against each other with their four/three restaurants in the Awards, respectively!  Continue reading →

Eat Out Top 30 Restaurant shortlist 2017 : a prediction!

Last week I wrote that Eat Out has announced that it is changing to a Top 30 Restaurant shortlist for its 2017 Awards. As is customary. I have tried to predict which top South African restaurants will make the Top 30 Restaurant shortlist, which should be announced by Eat Out shortly! I have struggled to find more than twenty worthy restaurants to make the Top 30  list! Continue reading →

Chef Arno Janse van Rensburg to leave The Kitchen at Maison, opens Janse & Co in December!

Yesterday I went to visit Chef Arno Janse van Rensburg of Eat Out Top 10 Restaurant The Kitchen at Maison, to hear more about his new restaurant Janse & Co he plans to open on Kloof Street in Cape Town in December. We stayed for lunch, and enjoyed Chef Arno’s three-ingredient focus of his dishes. Continue reading →

Eat Out Restaurant Awards 2017 change yet again, as does its Awards ceremony!

Every year Eat Out seems to change something about its Awards, and this year is no exception. For 2017 Eat Out has decided to increase the shortlist of Restaurants to a Top 30, from which a Top Ten will be recognized at the 17 November Awards ceremony. Continue reading →

Shimmy Beach Club keeps chill outside, warms up with chili inside!

On a cold winter evening a number of invited guests was kept hot and spicy at Shimmy Beach Club, with a chili-themed evening of eating foods containing chili, drinking Bloemendal wines and Sir Thomas beers, tasting tequila, and having an Eat Out ‘MeetOut’, a novel event concept, the first of four ‘MeetOut’ events planned for the next few months.  Continue reading →
