Sweet Service goes to El Corte Inglis Porto; Sour Service Award goes to Uber Lisbon!

The Sweet Service Award goes to El Corte Inglis department store in Porto, which has a fabulous free collection service at key tourist points and hotels in Porto. I made use of it to get to the store from the Se Cathedral, and to be dropped off back at my hotel. The second driver was a tour guide, pointing out key tourist attractions to me. On arrival at the store, I was told about the VIP promotion for foreigners, receiving 10% off on their purchases, which credit can be redeemed in certain departments. Whilst my shopping experience with the MAC cosmetic assistant was far from satisfactory, the Cosmetics Manager made up for it by assisting me with the payment of my purchase of their lipstick, given that the line that I like is to be discontinued. I was also invited to the restaurant, to enjoy a free Pasteis de Nata, and a glass of Port or a cup of coffee, graciously substituted for a lovely Tetley’s Tea when I requested it. And I could use the 10% credit to buy a fruit knife for my Camino journey. Continue reading →

Facebook, Instagram, and Gmail accounts back up again, after a severe hacking attack!

My Social Media accounts were severely hacked while I was in the air flying to London on Tuesday evening 28 May. It has taken a week, and the extreme patience and cleverness of a dear friend, to unhack my Facebook and Messenger, Instagram, and Gmail accounts, everything now back up and running since yesterday. Sweet Service Award goes to Sorbet Camps Bay; Sour Service Award goes to Facebook/Instagram!

The Sweet Service Award goes to Sorbet in Camps Bay, and its owner Debbie, for her service recovery. When I went for a Pedi, I did not notice until I got home that the staff member assigned to me had used the wrong colour on my toes, despite me asking for the nail polish Sorbet Ice is Nice colour to match that of my finger nails. Debbie offered for the nail colour to be redone the following day, an offer I accepted gratefully. This is the second Sweet Service Award for this Sorbet branch. Continue reading →

Sweet Service Award to Woolworths; Sour Service Award goes to Wesley Thomas!

The Sweet Service Award goes to Woolworths in the Waterfront, and its Manager Warren Sitzer. I received poor service in looking to buy wine glasses in the Homeware department, so poor that I went to buy some at @Home instead. At Country Road inside the Woolworths store I wanted to pay for a top, but there was no staff member to be seen. I wanted to relate both service issues to a manager, and Warren listened, apologised with charm, and brought me some roses. He said he remembered my son and I shopping at the Paarl Mall branch more than ten years ago, when we lived in Franschhoek. He also shared the amazing developments lying ahead for this Waterfront branch. He invited me to chat to him at any time that I experience any problems at this branch. Wow!

Restaurant Review: Le Petit Manoir Restaurant just does not gel, despite Chefs’ experience In a Michelin star restaurant!

Last week I invited my friends Clint and Llewellyn Lambert (GM of the Franschhoek Boutique Hotel, and influential blogger at Hospitality Hedonist) to join me for dinner at Le Petit Manoir in Franschhoek, which opened in July. Having had more than enough time to settle in, it was a severely (and costly) experience, of a completely dysfunctional restaurant. I apologise for the longer than average Review, summarizing my experiences with Chef Kevin Grobler’s cooking since 2015.  Continue reading →
