New restaurant openings in Cape Town and the Winelands appear to still be on the slow side. Former JAN Head Chef Kevin Grobler has returned to the Cape. Very sad is the recent tragic passing of Aimee Josten, an important half of the award-winning Karoux restaurant in McGregor. De Volkskombuis has reopened in Stellenbosch after an extensive renovation, while The Big Easy is no longer operating in the town. Eric Bulpitt is the new Executive Chef at Pierneef à La Motte.

I am a very keen fan of one Michelin Star JAN restaurant in Nice, having eaten there three times in the past three years. When I saw that Chef Scott Armstrong announced his departure from JAN ten days ago, I sat up, and wondered where he was moving to. Reading the news that Head Chef Kevin Grobler has finished up at JAN is of even greater concern, seen on Facebook yesterday. (more…)

New restaurant openings in Cape Town and the Winelands appear to still be on the slow side. Chef Oliver Cattermole’s Bovine Restaurant has opened. Chef Piet Huysentruyt of one Michelin Star Likoké restaurant in France has a pop-up at The Conservatory in Franschhoek, running until 15 March. Top chefs John van Zyl and Constantijn Hahndiek have left Thali and Hartford House, respectively.

At 19h30 this evening ‘JAN’ will be launched on via, on Channel 147 on DStv, a series of nine hour-long episodes kicking off tonight. It celebrates JAN restaurant in Nice, which has been awarded one Michelin star for two years running, and its co-owner Chef Jan-Hendrik van der Westhuizen. I have had the pleasure of eating at Chef Jan-Hendrik’s JAN restaurant three times in the past three years, the most Proudly South African restaurant in the world, and deserving of the highest Eat Out accolade in the 2017 Top 10 Restaurant Awards. Excellent news is that Chef Jan-Hendrik is missing South Africa, and has very gently hinted that he will be setting up a JAN restaurant in the Cape!  (more…)

A three-week writing focus at Apricale in Italy saw me complete the writing of a book within the time period I had allocated to this first-ever writing challenge. As the catalyst for The Book was Chef Jan-Hendrik van der Westhuizen, in that I met a special man at his book launch in March last year, and that The Book tells the story of the transformational effect of the meeting, there was no better restaurant to eat at on Saturday, to celebrate the completion of The Book, than at JAN Restaurant in Nice! It felt like Christmas, it being exciting to experience JAN Restaurant again, my third visit in two years!  (more…)

Today I depart on a two-week eating tour of France, continuing my World’s 50 Best Restaurant journey I began in New York and London in July last year. There is no more exciting start to my culinary trip than dinner at JAN restaurant in Nice on Wednesday, given that it has just been awarded the 2017 Michelin one-star rating. In February 2016 owner Jan-Hendrik van Der Westhuizen did our country proud, in becoming the first South African chef to own a Michelin-star restaurant.  (more…)

imageBetty Blue Bistro had been on the top of my Hermanus restaurant list, and I arranged to meet my UK friend Lisa Harlow there for lunch, seven months after my last visit to the famous whale-watching town. There is little blue (only on the exterior of the building), a fresh buttercup yellow dominating the decor! (more…)

imageIt was a very special privilege to attend the launch of ‘JAN: A Breath of French Air‘, the second book by Chef Jan-Hendrik van der Westhuizen, owner of the recently crowned one star Michelin JAN restaurant in Nice, the restaurant which I had the pleasure of eating at in June last year! Fabulous news is that Chef Jan-Hendrik and/or JAN will have a future local presence, Chef Jan-Hendrik saying ‘it will be an honour to come back‘ to our country! (more…)
