The Sweet Service Award goes to Maison J Café et Croissant in Camps Bay. The coffee and croissant outlet and coffee shop opened just as I moved to Camps Bay almost three months ago, and has been a haven of exceptional service. Every day that I have been there to have a cappuccino, which is almost daily, necessitating a walk and eliminating the need to drive elsewhere for my daily fix, co-owner David Chait and/or Operations Manager Guy have been at the outlet, with one exception. It was at a dinner with Katie Friedman of Urban Lime that I heard about the opening of Victoire, a French Boulangerie, Pâtisserie, and Bistro in the newly redeveloped Speakers’ Corner building on Church Square in Cape Town. I attended the opening, as well as had breakfast at Victoire the following day.  (more…)

When Jason’s first opened alongside Jardine’s restaurant off Bree Street in Cape Town many years ago, it was a tiny take-away eatery serving breads and sandwiches. Through low-key but continued growth Jason Bakery has established itself as one of our city’s top bakeries, and Jason Lillie as Cape Town’s croissant king!

On Monday Maison J Café et Croissant was launched, in a joint venture with five co-owners and retailer Pick ‘n Pay. Lucky for me the coffee and croissant sit-down and take-away outlet is being test-run in Camps Bay, the suburb to which I have very recently returned as a resident. (more…)
