On Tuesday Winemag.co.za awarded 25 Cape Bordeaux Red Blends top scores of 90 and higher, out of 100, the third year that Editor and chairman of the judging committee Christian Eedes has compiled a Report on this wine category. I was unable to attend the function, as I was attending another wine event at the same time, but received the media release, with the results.  (more…)

Open Wine is offering local wine lovers as well as visitors to our city a wonderful service in introducing the wine brands it stocks by means of a one-hour tasting on Tuesday evenings, each tasting being hosted by a different wine brand. Last night the focus was on Morgenster Wine and Olive Estate, not only on its wines but on its olive oils too. (more…)

VeggieBoxThe Italian Ambassador Vincenzo Shioppa Narranta will be hosting an Italian-inspired dinner for 18 persons at his ambassadorial residence in Bishopscourt on 11 November, the proceeds of which will go to the Chef’s who Share’s Veggie Box Initiative. Wines will be from Morgenster, and its owner Giulio Bertrand will attend the dinner as well.

To be guests at the fine dinner, bids are requested for its attendance, the highest bidder being eligible to bring eleven other guests for this once-off dinner, all in aid of a good cause. Chefs who Share is a charity drive (more…)

imageThe Sweet Service Award goes to iFix at the V & A Waterfront and its Manager Jo Robinson, for his service recovery after receiving the Sour Service Award last week. He called me last Friday, and apologized profusely for his staff letting their side down. He encouraged me to call him directly for any future problems. I told him about two sticky keys I have on my laptop, and he told me to bring it in, despite the company not working on Samsung laptops. They cleaned the laptop, but could not get the two keys fixed. imageAt a function in the lovely Bar of the newly opened De Warenmarkt in Stellenbosch Mvemve Raats De Compostella 2013 was named the overall winner of the inaugural RisCura Red Hot Wine Awards for Bordeaux-style red blends.

Bordeaux-style red blends tend to have the ability to mature in the bottle for many years, most commonly contain Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in the blend, but often Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot form part (more…)

Heartbreaking was the fire which closed down The Stack one week after it opened last month in Leinster Hall in Gardens.  We update information about newly opened and closed restaurants continuously.

*   Open Door has opened at Constantia Uitsig, the third restaurant to be opened by Neil Grant and his business partner Barry Engelbrecht (of Burrata and Bocca), previously the River Café. (photograph)

*   Michael Townsend of the Harbour House Group is planning to open two new restaurants on the Muizenberg beachfront: a 160-seater Live Bait, and Howlin’ Wolf, a burger and beer quick service restaurant. (more…)

*   Daniel ‘Harry Potter’ Radcliffe was spotted climbing Table Mountain yesterday.  He is in Cape Town for the filming of ‘Game Changer’.

*   Lion’s Head is closed to hikers, due to a rockfall, but Table Mountain National Park is hoping to re-open it in time for the weekend.

*   Cape Vintner Classification will be launched officially at the London Wine Fair this week, to counter the image of our country’s wines as ‘cheap and cheerful‘.  The Classification will represent the 80% of brands that make up 10% of our wine export volume, and will market quality local (more…)
