JAN the JOURNAL has published its second volume of 2018, just before the year closed. It has taken me almost two months to look at it after buying a copy at Woolworths, the 297 page manuscript of The Jan Hendrik Group (PTY) Limited being more than intimidating in thickness, and time required to do it justice in reading it. Despite having an editor for the publication, one wonders how Chef Jan-Hendrik manages to find the time to collate such a heavy-weight Journal in his role as Editor-in-Chief, given his commitment as chef to his one Michelin star restaurant JAN in Nice, and his regular trips to Cape Town and SA.  (more…)

Last week I invited my friends Clint and Llewellyn Lambert (GM of the Franschhoek Boutique Hotel, and influential blogger at Hospitality Hedonist) to join me for dinner at Le Petit Manoir in Franschhoek, which opened in July. Having had more than enough time to settle in, it was a severely (and costly) experience, of a completely dysfunctional restaurant. I apologise for the longer than average Review, summarizing my experiences with Chef Kevin Grobler’s cooking since 2015.  (more…)

I am a very keen fan of one Michelin Star JAN restaurant in Nice, having eaten there three times in the past three years. At 19h30 this evening ‘JAN’ will be launched on via, on Channel 147 on DStv, a series of nine hour-long episodes kicking off tonight. It celebrates JAN restaurant in Nice, which has been awarded one Michelin star for two years running, and its co-owner Chef Jan-Hendrik van der Westhuizen. I have had the pleasure of eating at Chef Jan-Hendrik’s JAN restaurant three times in the past three years, the most Proudly South African restaurant in the world, and deserving of the highest Eat Out accolade in the 2017 Top 10 Restaurant Awards. Excellent news is that Chef Jan-Hendrik is missing South Africa, and has very gently hinted that he will be setting up a JAN restaurant in the Cape!  (more…)

Today I depart on a two-week eating tour of France, continuing my World’s 50 Best Restaurant journey I began in New York and London in July last year. There is no more exciting start to my culinary trip than dinner at JAN restaurant in Nice on Wednesday, given that it has just been awarded the 2017 Michelin one-star rating. In February 2016 owner Jan-Hendrik van Der Westhuizen did our country proud, in becoming the first South African chef to own a Michelin-star restaurant.  (more…)

JANMichelinawardLast June, whilst on holiday in Europe, I made the spontaneous decision to fly from Munich via Dusseldorf to Nice, for a lunch.  The lunch at JAN Restaurant was the highlight of my eating career to date. Today JAN Restaurant, (more…)
