Top 10 Women Chefs in Cape Town and the Winelands: 2022

For the third year running we are acknowledging female chefs heading up restaurant kitchens in Cape Town and the Winelands.

Started during Lockdown in 2020, as a celebration of Women’s Day, the Top 10 Women Chefs List highlights how few top restaurants have female chefs in their kitchens in general, and even fewer have women chefs heading up the restaurant kitchens.

We are grateful to Brenda Wilkinson of RIO LARGO Olive Estate for sponsoring a gift of its beautiful colourful Extra Virgin Olive Oil packs to our Top 10 Women Chefs. Continue reading →

Meet Chef Kerry Kilpin of Tryn/Bistro 1682 at Steenberg: 2021 Top 10 Woman Chef

Kerry Kilpin is the Executive Chef at Steenberg, in charge of both Tryn and Bistro 1682 restaurants on the wine estate. She was selected as one of the 2021 Cape’s Top 10 Women Chefs, and receives a bottle of Adhara Premium Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

Heading up one restaurant is a challenge in itself, but heading up two restaurants and that during a pandemic which affected the restaurant industry the most through its constantly changing Lockdown regulations regarding alcohol sales, operating hours, and restaurant capacity, reflects Chef Kerry’s strength as a manager as well as a chef.

We salute you Chef Kerry!

Restaurants offering Food Delivery/Collection during 2021 Level 4 Lockdown: Cape Town and Winelands.

P

Cape Town and Winelands Restaurants have been quick to set up a Delivery and/or Collection Service, since President Ramaphosa announced the Level 4 Lockdown on Sunday,  closing down all restaurants for Sit-Down Service in the country.

Whilst surviving two restaurant closures in Lockdown last year, this restaurant Level 4 closure appears to have caught many by surprise. Many restaurateurs have become wiser through last year’s experience, and have calculated the break even point in terms of minimum income to be made. Combined with the rain all week to date and freezing cold, and the fear of the fast-spreading Delta Covid variant, many restaurants are making losses by being open for Take-Aways. Continue reading →

A Women’s Day salute to Women Restaurant Owners and Top Chefs in Cape Town and the Winelands, sadly only a handful!

Since having created a Facebook Group for Food Delivery and Collection during Lockdown, I have become aware of women restaurant owners, something I had never written about or even thought about, only being aware of female chefs in our part of the world. For Women’s Day I planned this article, to profile the female restaurant owners in Cape Town and the Winelands, sadly only finding a small handful of 12.

I have also compiled a list of the Top 13 women Head/Executive Chefs in Cape Town and the Winelands.

Restaurants offering Sit-Down service in Cape Town and Winelands in Lockdown Level 3: a First List!

On Monday restaurants were allowed to reopen for Sit-Down Service, after having only been allowed to offer a Food Delivery service from May, and a Food and Alcohol Delivery and Collection Service from June onwards.

I have been requested to prepare a list of Restaurants offering a Sit-Down Service, in addition to the Facebook Group which I created of Restaurants offering Food and Alcohol Delivery and Collection. The majority of restaurants offering a Sit-Down service will continue offering a Food and Alcohol Delivery and/or Collection Service.  Continue reading →
