I have made a decision to stop supporting and attending WineMag events after having been called to a meeting with Christian Eedes, editor of WineMag, and his business partner Jax Lahoud. I was badly disrespected by fellow-writer Eedes, and I will not stand for bullying of any kind. (more…)

The 33rd Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Auction held at Spier yesterday raised R13,2 million, and set a new record price for red wine, Kaapzicht Estate The Ultimate Vision Red Blend 2015 made by Danie Steytler, achieving R16600 for a case of six.  (more…)

In less than a week after opening its newest Tiger’s Milk Restaurant & Bar on Kloof Street in Cape Town, the restaurant is operating smoothly, as if it has always been there. It is already busy, attracting custom with little marketing effort to date by the Harbour House Group. A hugely exciting attraction is that DJ René Tanguy will be playing at the newest Tiger’s Milk on Fridays, starting this week. It is the 26th Harbour House Group restaurant to open.  (more…)

As I was traveling in the first week of September, I was unable to attend the Blaauwklippen Blending  Competition, having attended many of the competition events over the years, always a fun and educational lunch at the Stellenbosch wine estate. (more…)

The Sweet Service Award goes to Rocksole Shoe and Bag Repair on Wale Street, and its charming owner Raj Jaga, who managed to fix the soles of my favorite pair of shoes in less than a week before my overseas trip, which I noticed in the last minute had been taking a lot of strain from all my dancing! I had forgotten about the public holiday shortening the week. He is extremely kind to his customers, and always tries to make a plan. He was awarded a Sweet Service Award in January too.  (more…)

I had not been to Spek & Bone yet, Chef Bertus Basson’s fourth restaurant, on Dorp Street in Stellenbosch. Bertus Basson @ The Ritz Revolving Restaurant is still awaiting official opening in Sea Point. I was severely disappointed with my visit to Spek & Bone with my friend Jenny last week. What was Chef Bertus thinking in setting up such a crap restaurant, given that he is on the Eat Out Top 10 list?! The c-word appears a number of times below, so sensitive readers are welcome to opt out of reading the rest of the review!  (more…)

Yesterday afternoon WineMag presented its first Merlot Report in a number of years, an evaluation of 67 entries. It was motivated by the Merlot Forum, and the results of the Report reflected that wines in the category are ‘good‘, but can improve greatly, according to WineMag Editor Christian Eedes. The ceremony was held at Asara wine estate outside Stellenbosch. (more…)

On Thursday we saluted Ken and Allan Forrester, Natasha Wray, and Martin Meinert, the four original  founders of 96 Winery Road on the outskirts of Stellenbosch, who still jointly own the restaurant 21 years later. It was a Media Lunch filled with nostalgia and reminiscing, being served the restaurant’s most popular dishes over the 21 years. (more…)

It was interesting to receive a media release earlier this week, announcing that SCHOON (de Companje) belonging to Fritz Schoon is to move out of its existing building on Church Street in Stellenbosch, to an as yet undisclosed new location, and that Boschendal moved into the building on Wednesday. imageLast week Elize Skriker and I went to the brand new La Parada Del Mar in Camps Bay, the 25th restaurant in the Harbour House Group we were told by Group founder Michael Townsend. We found a restaurant sizzling with good food, a fantastic view, and good service from friendly staff. (more…)
