I was invited to the newly opened Coco Safar a few days ahead of its opening in the newly refurbished Artem centre, previously the Adelphi Centre in Main Road in Sea Point. A week ago I invited a young chef intern to join me for Brunch at Coco Safar, on a Sunday morning.  (more…)

On Tuesday I attended the first tasting of wines introduced by a winemaker and paired with a meal, at OpenWine, the tasting room representing a number of our country’s top wine brands in its Wale Street venue, at the invitation of co-owner Marta Gobbo. It is the first time that I have experienced their new format of wine tasting and food pairing. (more…)

I was recently asked if I would be leaving the country on Day Zero, projected to be 16 April currently, something that had never crossed my mind! It appears that a large number of locals are making plans to leave Cape Town, and reside elsewhere in our country or internationally, where they will have access to water! Quite frankly, I wouldn’t miss Day Zero for anything, as Cape Town will be making world history in being the first city in the world to run out of water!  (more…)

Last Friday I was honoured to experience a preview of Coco Safar, which opens in Sea Point’s newly developed Artem, previously the Adelphi Centre, today. It houses the world’s first Botanical Coffee and Rooibos Brewery, the top coffee roastery in Africa, and is a top quality patisserie and chocolate supplier, bought to take away or enjoyed sitting down. An exciting coffee and Rooibos drinking Renaissance is being created at Coco Safar in Cape Town today, the culmination of a ten-year development journey. The decor style is inspired by Belle Epoque. The Sweet Service Award goes to the Hussar Grill Stellenbosch, and its waiter Aiden. I ‘stumbled’ across the restaurant on a Stellenbosch day, and the charming Aiden made my visit there an excellent experience, a rare treat. He asked the kitchen to plate the Marié Rosé sauce separately for the Prawn Avo cocktail starter in case it had chili in it, helped me to squeeze the hard  lemon over the starter, and brought me another complimentary sweet potato crisp and olive treat when I had forgotten to photograph it initially. It is clear that he loves his job!  (more…)

Ever since I reviewed Chef Bertus Basson’s Spek & Bone dive of a restaurant in Stellenbosch in July last year, Basson has been on a mission to discredit me as a reviewer, not being man-enough to accept my honest feedback. Last week I popped in at his latest eatery, De Vrije Burger, a hamburger and ice cream joint, on Plein Street in Stellenbosch, the take-away outlet being far below the standard of his Eat Out Top 10 award stature! One wonders why he is scraping the barrel with cheap and nasty restaurants, when he started off with the top level Top 10 Overture restaurant, his first! Each new restaurant, of his five restaurants, is one level below the previously opened one in terms of quality!   (more…)

The Sweet Service Award goes to Jade, a shop in Stellenbosch specializing in selling pearls, and its Manager and jewelry designer Ariéne Jansen. On a recent shopping visit, mentioning that the purchase was a birthday indulgence, I received pouches in different sizes from Ariéne, one each in which to keep my earrings, and the other the necklace which I had bought, very convenient gifts for traveling. I had never been spoilt by the shop like this previously, having awarded it a Sour Service Award earlier this year, due to the poor service received from another staff member! On my return ten days later, to request matching up a favorite earring which I had lost, Ariéne efficiently and very inexpensively created the lost earrings and fixed another earring. She also made up a pearl necklace for me, to an exact length, within a two-hour period, which allowed me to browse the shops around Church Street.  (more…)

It is almost impossible to summarize the goosebump specialness of being in the company of two creative geniuses on Saturday afternoon, at Salon58 No 11, with the theme of ‘Trace’ – style and fashion icon Jackie Burger and Michelin-star chef Jan-Hendrik van der Westhuizen.  (more…)

I have made a decision to stop supporting and attending WineMag events after having been called to a meeting with Christian Eedes, editor of WineMag, and his business partner Jax Lahoud. I was badly disrespected by fellow-writer Eedes, and I will not stand for bullying of any kind. (more…)

The 33rd Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Auction held at Spier yesterday raised R13,2 million, and set a new record price for red wine, Kaapzicht Estate The Ultimate Vision Red Blend 2015 made by Danie Steytler, achieving R16600 for a case of six.  (more…)
