Corona Lockdown Journey Journal, Day 185 of Level 1, 3 April 2022

Sunday 3 April 2022, Day 185 of Level 1 😷

Corona Lockdown Gratitude 🙏

#grateful for a lovely sunny day and NO wind 🙏, the wind having blown over two metal plant pots with my bougainvilleas overnight, not happened in 4 years of living here; for a relaxed day; for the company of Earl Grey when I’m at home, having taken over the spare room as his bedroom; for replying to my clients’ diner reviews; for seeing Viv again, fetching her and taking her to Labotessa for an afternoon treat, enjoying their all-day breakfast; for each of us shopping at Fideli’s across the Continue reading →

Corona Virus: Lockdown Journey Journal, Day 150 of Level 1, 27 February 2022

Sunday 27 February 2022, Day 150 of Level 1 😷

Corona Lockdown Gratitude 🙏

#grateful for surviving on far too little sleep, it being so hot last night, not cooling down; for writing two Blogposts for the week ahead, and an email that I had to get off my chest, which made me feel a lot lighter when done; for a visit to Viv’s new home in Tamboerskloof with the most amazing Table Mountain view; for amazing mist rolling in to Camps Bay when I drove home, stopping to Continue reading →

New Level 1 Curfew starting time a bonus for Cape Town & Winelands Restaurants: March 2021.

The revised Level 3 regulations introduced at the beginning of February, permitting the sale of alcohol and the closing time moved to 22h00, has been a boost for the restaurant industry, experiencing a good past month. The new restaurant closing time of 23h00 since yesterday is certain to be a further boost for a very hard-hit restaurant industry.

Despite the Lockdown regulations affecting restaurants so badly in the past 11 months, a total of 68 new restaurants have opened in Cape Town and the Winelands during Lockdown. Top chefs have opened new restaurants, including Chefs Peter Tempelhoff, Cheyne Morrisby, and Liam Tomlin. Chef Cheyne’s HIMITSU at the Camps Bay Retreat is the newest restaurant to have opened. Cape Town’s oldest pub, the Perseverance Tavern, has reopened with new owners.

The latest permanent Lockdown Restaurant Closure list stands at 97 Restaurants in Cape Town and the Winelands. Sadly one of the greatest casualties of Covid and the Lockdown is the closure of The Restaurant at Waterkloof, as are the closures of Balducci’s and Belthazar in the Waterfront and La Tête on Bree Street.  Clarke’s, The Shortmarket Club, Koffi Terapi, Ocean Blue, and Dahlia on Regent announced their permanent closure earlier in Lockdown, but have since reopened. Fork in Franschhoek is the latest closure.

The Test Kitchen, and The Food Barn have changed their offerings and their restaurant names in reaction to the Covid Lockdown. They have recently been joined by Chefs Warehouse and Canteen on Bree Street, now called Chefs Warehouse Winebar & Pinchos.

The Test Kitchen and The Foodbarn Restaurants transformed to cope with aftermath of Covid Lockdown!

Franschhoek saw a number of Lockdown Restaurant Closures, but has five new restaurant openings, some restaurants have relocated, and some have changed their offering. See note about the closure of Fork above.

Restaurant Review: Noah Café a secret hideaway, unique in its Tamboerskloof Sourdough bread based menu!

It was a chance photograph of the entrance to Noah Café that attracted my attention to this secret hideaway in Tamboerskloof, not even seeing a menu or any other details upfront. I decided to book, and invited my friend Gary Peterson to join me.  I felt transported to a Mediterranean desert island, captivated by its uniqueness.

Located in the 10 bedroom Noah House and now run by new Dutch owners in the former Underberg Guest House, Noah Café pays tribute to a homegrown sourdough bread baked in Tamboerskloof by Ailine Liefeld of A Sour Story! Continue reading →

Corona Virus: Lockdown Journey Journal, Day 49 of Level 3 Adjusted, 13 February 2021

Saturday 13 February 2021, Day 49 of Level 3 Adjusted, Day 344 of Lockdown 😷

Corona Gratitude 🙏

#Grateful for an amazing day with many surprises; for Imtiaz coming to work; for a leg wax at the Skin Studio in Sea Point, Stephanie always being gentle 💙; for a lovely hair cut and colour by Isabella Page Morgan 💙; for getting to my lunch date with Gary Peterson at the new Noah Café almost on time, spending a most wonderful lunch and afternoon there 💙; for collecting the last three boxes of figs from Peppertree Café 💙; for a quick clean up walk with Imtiaz, but we were far too early as the picnickers were still in Camps Bay in full force, so I’ll go and do the rest tomorrow after the rain; for a fabulous evening at Utopia, lovely to see that it was so full that reservations were closed for this evening; for a surprise gift pack of wines and a gin standing outside my door from the lovely UK clients staying in one of the apartments in our building, with whom I had such a lovely restaurant chat two days ago, who had to return to the UK today due to a serious illness of his brother-in-law; and for being happy and healthy. 🙏💙 Continue reading →

Cape of Fires: Lion’s Head and Tintswalo Atlantic Lodge victims of recent fires!

It was a shock to wake up to the news that the main restaurant, lounge, and kitchen building caught fire earlier this morning at Tintswalo Atlantic Lodge, the Boutique Hotel beautifully located at the foot of Chapman’s Peak, and looking onto The Sentinel mountain in Hout Bay. It is the second fire at the lodge in four years. This follows the devastating fire on Lion’s Head just over a week ago.  Continue reading →
