The Sweet Service Award goes to Tiger’s Milk Kloof Street, where I experienced double service excellence in one afternoon. I had finished a meeting, and while chatting to Group staff member Linda Hofstetter, saw that my phone battery was down to 5%. I tried to book my Uber trip back home, but I could not get it to work. Linda tried to help me on my phone, and when it didn’t want to work, she called a car for me on her App, and refused to accept payment for it. A security staff member stood at the Kloof Street entrance to the restaurant, and assisted me in identifying the Uber vehicle, and in safely walking me across the road to the car.

The explosion of restaurant openings in Cape Town and the Winelands in the last two months is a concern to many, both as restaurant lovers, in that one cannot keep up, and as restaurant owners, as there is not enough business for everyone.

Last month saw the opening of Seta at Villa 47, Le coin Français by Darren Badenhorst in Franschhoek, The Bistro and Deli at La Paris outside Franschhoek, Chef Duncan Doherty’s Eatery at Colmant in Franschhoek, and Boschendal at Oude Bank in Stellenbosch, amongst others.

We update information about newly opened and closed restaurants continuously, and welcome such news.

In less than a week after opening its newest Tiger’s Milk Restaurant & Bar on Kloof Street in Cape Town, the restaurant is operating smoothly, as if it has always been there. It is already busy, attracting custom with little marketing effort to date by the Harbour House Group. A hugely exciting attraction is that DJ René Tanguy will be playing at the newest Tiger’s Milk on Fridays, starting this week. It is the 26th Harbour House Group restaurant to open.  (more…)

On Tuesday evening I had the honour of experiencing Rare Grill, which was named 2017 The Wolftrap Steakhouse Championship winner, the first time in the five year history of the Championships that a Cape Town steakhouse has won the award. As a restaurant writer in the main, and focusing on the food side mostly, it was an honour to be invited by Harbour House Group Brand Manager Stuart Bailey to participate in a blind-tasting of more than 500 wines over four days, to select those rated best for the winelists of the 25 or so restaurants in the Harbour House Group. Iconic restaurant The Tasting Room at Le Quartier Français closed it doors at the end of April, after many years of operation under the guidance of Chef Margot Janse.  We update information about newly opened and closed restaurants continuously, and welcome such news.
