TripAdvisor announces 2019 Top 10 Travellers’ Choice Awards ‘Best Fine Dining Restaurants’ in South Africa, La Colombe makes a meal of it!

It amuses me how much weight La Colombe places on the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards, clearly because it is the only awards ranking in which it comes first, and in which it beats its arch enemy The Test Kitchen, despite most serious restaurant diners knowing how questionable a TripAdvisor rating, and therefore this Award ranking, is! Restaurant Review: La Guarida in Havana dishes up more than the ‘Strawberry & Chocolate’ Oscar nominated movie!

From my Havana Guide Book as well as recommendations I learnt that La Guarida was deemed to be the best restaurant in Cuba. As I wanted to try out only the best the city had to offer, the BnB Manager Alain booked the restaurant for lunch on the special Cuban public holiday of 26 July, an apt day to celebrate my interesting stay in and imminent departure from Cuba.

Is Restaurant Mosaic at The Orient SA’s joint Best Restaurant with The Test Kitchen, despite their ranking drop at the Eat Out Awards 2018?!

The Eat Out judges have a hard time in deciding on the ranking of our country’s top restaurants, especially when our top restaurants are increasingly performing on international restaurant list rankings! This year they seemed to markedly not have considered the top performance of two internationally crowned SA restaurants, The Test Kitchen, and even more so, Restaurant Mosaic at The Orient outside Pretoria. Both these restaurants have just made the prestigious 2019 Top 200 of the La Liste international Top 1000 restaurant List, rubbing shoulders with the world’s top chefs.  Continue reading →

Future of SA’s first Michelin star restaurant JAN may include Cape Town!

imageIt was a very special privilege to attend the launch of ‘JAN: A Breath of French Air‘, the second book by Chef Jan-Hendrik van der Westhuizen, owner of the recently crowned one star Michelin JAN restaurant in Nice, the restaurant which I had the pleasure of eating at in June last year! Fabulous news is that Chef Jan-Hendrik and/or JAN will have a future local presence, Chef Jan-Hendrik saying ‘it will be an honour to come back‘ to our country! Continue reading →

Conflict of interest: La Motte Culinary Director reviews Franschhoek restaurants for Eat Out

Eat-Out-mag-coverEarlier this year I was shocked to see that the La Motte Culinary Director (and wife of its red wine maker Edmund Terblanche) as well as Kokkedoor judge Hetta van Deventer had reviewed De Warenmarkt for Eat Out. Now it appears from the new Eat Out 2016 magazine that she reviewed a number of Franschhoek and other Boland restaurants (many on wine farms too) that are in direct competition with Pierneef à la Motte restaurant!

At the time that I saw the De Warenmarkt review by Van Deventer I Continue reading →

TripAdvisor tries to tackle fraud, too little too late!

imageIn an unprecedented move, TripAdvisor CEO Steve Kaufer wrote to millions of TripAdvisor properties today, to warn them against falling for fraudulent requests for payment to businesses offering them the placement of positive reviews, or the removal of negative TripAdvisor reviews. Even worse is that some of these bogus companies claim to have an official relationship with TripAdvisor!

Restaurant Review: Helena’s Restaurant at Coopmanshuijs nowhere near 5-star!

imageI had read good thing about Helena’s Restaurant at Coopmanshuijs, and was left with an impression that it was a must-try restaurant. It was a severe disappointment when I had dinner there last night, especially in terms of service and ambiance.  It does not match the level of the 5-star hotel in which it is located.

I had booked earlier in the day, when I walked past, surprised to find the 16-bedroom five-star hotel on popular Church Street in Stellenbosch. When I arrived just after the World Cup Continue reading →

The Test Kitchen 22nd Best Fine Dining Restaurant in the world on TripAdvisor!

Tet Kitchen luke-dale-roberts-atI am loath to write about any survey or compilation by TripAdvisor, but the pride of seeing Cape Town Restaurant The Test Kitchen in its list of 25 Best Fine Dining Restaurants in the World makes it worth acknowledging.

Announced today, TripAdvisor does not explain how the Best 25 Fine Dining Restaurants were Continue reading →

A whale of a 19-year Guest House career comes to an end, a new Food career awaits!

imageIt was Futurist Faith Popcorn who predicted a trend of ‘Recareering’ back in the ‘Seventies, one having multiple careers in a lifetime, at a time when I myself was in my first career as a Futurist. I could not have foreseen that my career path from Futurist to Market Researcher, Marketing Lecturer, Research Consultant, Food PR Consultant, and then Guest House owner for the last 19 years would lead me to my new and seventh career, to that as a Continue reading →
