On Sunday 17 November, from midday to midnight, the country’s top restaurants will be celebrated and will celebrate their performance in the hotly contested 2019 Eat Out Awards. Could there be another upset in the number one slot, as happened last year when The Test Kitchen slipped into second position, after number one winner Restaurant at Waterkloof? Once again the Awards event is in the form of a lunch, cooked for by finalist and non-finalist chefs, and will yet again be held at GrandWest in Cape Town. The theme of the awards event is A Grand Garden Party.
The Top Awards of the event are the 2019 Eat Out Restaurant of the Year, and the Eat Out S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna Chef of the Year. Other awards presented at the ceremony are the Eat Out Retail Capital New Restaurant of the Year, the Eat Out Nederburg Rising Star, the Eat Out Graham Beck Chefs’ Chef Award, the Eat Out Service Excellence Award, the Eat Out Wine Service Award, the Eat Out John Psillos Award for Outstanding Contribution to Service, the Eat Out Lannice Snyman Lifetime Achievement Award, the Eat Out Woolworths Sustainability Award, the Eat Out Nespresso Innovation Award, and the Eat Out Style Award.
Thirty finalist restaurants will be announced prior to the event lunch. Chief Judge Margot Janse said about the 2019 Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards: ‘The South African culinary scene grows from strength to strength every year. This awards ceremony is the ideal platform to acknowledge and celebrate our extraordinary chefs and all they have accomplished in the industry.’ Janse has been involved with the Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Restaurant Awards since 2018. Aside from Janse, all judges remain anonymous.
