*   The South African Wine Tasting Championships 2014 will be held at the Hilton Hotel on 2 August.  Each participant will taste 50 wines, whereafter they must identify 10 wines tasted blind, out of the 50.  The 50 highest scoring participants will participate at the World Championships at Champagne Bollinger in October. *   The International Air Transportation Association (IATA) has warned that the new Immigration Regulations could affect the profitability of airlines serving South Africa, in that they ‘might stop people travelling‘, even if they were ‘well intentioned‘.

*   London is the most visited city in the world for the third time in four years, according to the MasterCard Global Destinations Cities Index.  The survey estimates that the city will receive 18,7 million visitors this year, beating Bangkok, which was ranked first last year.  Paris, Singapore, and Dubai also fall into the Top 5 visitor cities list.

*   All flights between the UK and the USA are being checked for electronic devices, passengers being separated from their devices if they are not charged, or refused boarding, due to stricter security measures following warnings of a terrorist attack which could be triggered via an electronic device. Other flights between the UK and other destinations may be affected by the security ruling too.

*   The Cape Leopard Trust is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a fundraising lunch at Leopard’s Leap on 16 August, organised by Opulent Living Experiences.  Chefs Pieter de Jager of Leopard’s Leap, Vanessa Marx from Dear Me, and Neil Jewell from Bread & Wine will be cooking a family-style lunch, which will be attended by three mystery celebrity guests, and will be hosted by Ian and Elana Afrika-Bredenkamp.  Cost is R1500 per person, the proceeds going solely to the Trust. *   Spier is hosting a ‘Burgers and Blends‘ event on 2 August, with winemaker Johan Jordaan leading participants through his wine blending secrets,  and will encourage them to blend their own Spier Creative Block 3.  Spier’s Eight restaurant will offer a Farmer Angus Beef Burger, served with Gorgonzola, and a plum and pink peppercorn chutney.  Cost is R175.  (received via e-mail from Spier Wine Farm)
