Is lifting of the Curfew a good omen for the Restaurant Industry? Restaurant Update January 2022!

 

The lifting of the Curfew late on 30 December was the best gift that the Restaurant industry has received in the past 21 months. It meant that restaurants could remain open late on New Year’s Eve, and that income was boosted by the longer trading, and better bookings for the evening, one which saw bookings sluggish until the announcement was made.  One hopes that it is a good omen for the restaurant industry for the year ahead, coupled with the recent reversal of the travel bans instituted by the UK, the USA and Germany, being our major tourism source markets.

For the first time the number of restaurant openings exceeds restaurant closures.

New restaurants opening in Cape Town and Winelands, 5 in Camps Bay, Greenhouse closes! December 2021

 

With the country at Level 1 for over a month, the restaurant tide is turning, with business in the restaurant industry improving. The impact of SA being placed on the travel ban list has already been felt, with booking cancellations.

For the first time in a number of months new restaurants are opening in Cape Town and the Winelands, including Rykaarts Stellenbosch, MiCaffé in Bree Street with more restaurants about to open in The Barracks, a most disappointing Shoreditch House restaurant at The Winchester Hotel, and in Camps Bay Beach House, Gibson’s Gourmet Burgers & Ribs Food Truck, Marcel’s Frozen Yoghurt, The Pottery, and Cause & Effect have opened, with Bo-Vine opening shortly.  Since the beginning of Lockdown 20 months ago, 122 new restaurants have opened. Restaurant KleinJAN and Wolfgat on 2021 Conde Naste Traveller World’s Most Beautiful Restaurant List!

 

Restaurant Klein JAN is going from strength to strength, which is no surprise, given that it is owned by Restaurateur and Chef Jan-Hendrik van der Westhuizen.  What is a surprise is that it is in the Kalahari Desert on Tswalu Private Game Reserve, miles away from anywhere.

Now Restaurant Klein JAN has received a new accolade, not for its cooking but for its beauty, being one of two South African restaurants making the 2021 Conde Nast Traveller Most Beautiful Restaurants in the World List, out of 39 restaurants in total, and accompanied by Wolfgat in Paternoster. A first taste of Chef Jan-Hendrik’s KLEIN JAN at Tswalu Private Game Reserve!

 

The likelihood of Capetonians experiencing Restaurant KLEIN JAN in the Tswalu Private Game Reserve, the newest restaurant in the JAN Collection by Chef Jan-Hendrik van der Westhuizen, is small, unless one is lucky enough to be Jo Pentz, whose daughter Jess is a chef at the new restaurant.

Jo has given me permission to post some of her photographs, mainly of the interior. I am still missing seeing information and photographs of the dishes served at KLEIN JAN.
