The Western Cape Minister of Agriculture Dr Ivan Meyer has announced that ‘Rooibos’ and ‘Red Bush’ were officially recognised by the European Commission on 31 May, thus officially protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications. It becomes the first African product to be protected by the European Union.
Rooibos Tea is an iconic beverage of our country, originating from Clanwilliam in the Western Cape, as well as the Northern Cape. Its name may not be used for Teas originating from any other parts of the world. It is widely available in Europe, as well as in other countries, known for its health benefits. On the fourth day of the South African Corona Virus Lockdown President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation this evening, speaking confidently, caringly, honestly, and positively, announcing the next step of the fight against the spread of the COVID-19 Virus. A team of 10000 field workers is to travel around the country to conduct tests amongst the population. He addressed the economic hardship our country faces, the Lockdown coming after the downgrading of our economy by rating agency Moody’s. The Government Gazette today published the final regulations governing the Corona Virus Lockdown in South Africa, commencing at midnight tonight. Transport arrangements and types of businesses deemed to be Essential Services and which may continue to operate have been announced, with stringent rules.
