{"id":1325,"date":"2009-02-21T08:38:36","date_gmt":"2009-02-21T06:38:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/?p=1325"},"modified":"2009-02-27T07:09:51","modified_gmt":"2009-02-27T05:09:51","slug":"cape-town-marketing-confusion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/cape-town\/cape-town-marketing-confusion\/","title":{"rendered":"Cape Town marketing confusion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/ctt-logo.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1330\" title=\"ctt-logo\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/ctt-logo.gif?resize=132%2C118\" alt=\"\" width=\"132\" height=\"118\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>Media reports earlier this week have sown confusion about who is handling the marketing of Cape Town.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Cape Times <\/strong>reported that the marketing of Cape Town had only been awarded to Cape Town Tourism (CTT) for a six month period, in a caretaking role, until &#8220;the city could find a permanent solution&#8221;, according to the City&#8217;s Theuns Vivian, of its Economic , Social Development and Tourism department.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The City acknowledged that it was unable to do the marketing of Cape Town internally.\u00a0\u00a0 Confusion was particularly created with the paragraph:&#8221;The consultants said that while there was some advantage in keeping CTT\u00a0as the marketing agency, it could create confusion.\u00a0 CTT was also not &#8220;currently geared&#8221; to act as destination marketing organisation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This paragraph reflects in part the criticsm\u00a0of the City&#8217;s decision to withdraw its funding of\u00a0Cape Town Routes Unlimited in July last year, as voiced by the province MEC Garth Strachan.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Cape Argus <\/strong>wrote that the City was looking for an\u00a0external\u00a0body to market Cape Town.\u00a0 It also referred to Cape Town Tourism conducting this task for the City &#8220;in the interim&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Members of Cape Town Tourism voted last year to change the Constitution of Cape Town Tourism, to allow it to take on the marketing role for the City.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mariette du Toit-Helmbold, CEO of Cape Town Tourism, reacted to the <strong>Cape Times <\/strong>article by saying that &#8220;it is a misrepresentation by a journalist of the City&#8217;s public participation process undertaken to determine whether\u00a0 marketing and visitor services must be outsourced or internalized in future.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The City had approved the outsourcing of the marketing this week.\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;I have double checked with Mansoor Mohammed (head of the City&#8217;s tourism department), \u00a0and he has put the story into\u00a0perspective.\u00a0 He has promised to address a letter\u00a0of clarification to me for interested parties.\u00a0 We will not respond to the media on this, although we know that bad reporting does a lot of damage to the industry and can create unnecessary confusion.&#8217; she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Du Toit-Helmbold did indicate that Cape Town Tourism does have to apply, through an open tender, to be appointed the marketing agency for the City, in order to prevent any future questions about the legality of the appointment.\u00a0\u00a0While this process is in place, the appointment of Cape Town Tourism is contractually agreed until 30 June 2009, with the view that the public participation process will have been completed, and Cape Town Tourism can then be appointed on a three year contract.<\/p>\n<p>Cape Town Tourism is in full swing in offering Marketing services for Cape Town, according to its contract with the City and the mandate from its members to do so.<\/p>\n<p>In the mean time, the City&#8217;s Economic Development and Tourism department has been found to\u00a0&#8220;not be up to its task&#8221;, reports the <strong>Cape Argus<\/strong>, and therefore a R 1,2 million review is to be undertaken of the department&#8217;s activities.\u00a0\u00a0 Called Project Rejuvenate, the organisation structure of the department is inadequate in allowing the Department to meet its mandate.\u00a0\u00a0 The project includes retraining existing staff and sourcing new staff.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Media reports earlier this week have sown confusion about who is handling the marketing of Cape Town.
