{"id":13754,"date":"2010-11-03T08:24:50","date_gmt":"2010-11-03T06:24:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/?p=13754"},"modified":"2011-05-17T19:34:46","modified_gmt":"2011-05-17T17:34:46","slug":"restaurant-review-hemelhuijs-is-heaven-from-manna","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/cape-town\/restaurant-review-hemelhuijs-is-heaven-from-manna\/","title":{"rendered":"Restaurant Review: Hemelhuijs is heaven from Manna!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/hemelhuijs-exterior-whale-cottage-portfolio.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-13763\" title=\"hemelhuijs-exterior-whale-cottage-portfolio\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/hemelhuijs-exterior-whale-cottage-portfolio-300x225.jpg?resize=300%2C225\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/hemelhuijs-exterior-whale-cottage-portfolio.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/hemelhuijs-exterior-whale-cottage-portfolio.jpg?w=640&amp;ssl=1 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>Hemelhuijs is a heavenly new restaurant which opened two weeks ago in Waterkant Street, close to the World Cup pedestrian bridge crossing over Buitengracht Street, on the city side.\u00a0\u00a0 It is owned by Jacques Erasmus, who was one of the founders of Manna, which had a strong following on Kloof Street, whilst it was owned by Maranda\u00a0Engelbrecht (she has just opened Babel at Babylonstoren).\u00a0\u00a0 Jacques assured me that Hemelhuijs is not another Manna, and that there will be no coconut bread, part of\u00a0a Manna signature dish.<\/p>\n<p>I asked about the restaurant name, and the Dutch imprint.\u00a0\u00a0 The name came from the direct translation, which would be the house of joy, or it being heavenly.\u00a0 The restaurant is also around the corner from the Lutheran\u00a0Church, which\u00a0one sees on Strand Street.\u00a0 He chose the Dutch link, to give it a more charming feel and it reflects his heritage and family tradition, coming through in the menu, for example the fresh farm eggs, farm chicken and lamb ribs, all of which Jacques and his team have reinvented.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/hemelhuijs-homeware-whale-cottage-portfolio.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-13769\" title=\"hemelhuijs-homeware-whale-cottage-portfolio\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/hemelhuijs-homeware-whale-cottage-portfolio-150x150.jpg?resize=150%2C150\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/hemelhuijs-homeware-whale-cottage-portfolio.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/usr\/www\/users\/whalec\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/hemelhuijs-homeware-whale-cottage-portfolio.jpg?zoom=2&amp;resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/usr\/www\/users\/whalec\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/hemelhuijs-homeware-whale-cottage-portfolio.jpg?zoom=3&amp;resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>The restaurant is a large space, and spills out onto the traffic-free pedestrian walkway.\u00a0 Neighbouring buildings sell products relating to the design and decor industry (Lightworld, Finda spa baths, and a paint shop is being set up).\u00a0 A Peruvian restaurant is set to open across the walkway.\u00a0\u00a0 When one walks in, one sees a display space for Jacques&#8217; &#8216;home ware&#8217; range,\u00a0black ceramic crockery which Jacques has\u00a0designed and is made for him.\u00a0The black colour, not just on the outside but inside too, retains the heat of the plates when pre-warmed, for half an hour,\u00a0he told me.\u00a0 I thought\u00a0them to be great for getting a better photograph\u00a0relative to\u00a0the dominant use of white plates in restaurants.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Jacques uses the restaurant as an outlet for the home ware, as well as for the wonderful slick classic yet modern square-shaped zen-feel furniture, made from wood and black steel structures, all of which can be ordered.\u00a0 Material serviettes are provided, and the cutlery is new and shiny, a classic modern design.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/hemelhuijs-jacques-engelbrecht-2-whale-cottage-portfolio.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-13765\" title=\"hemelhuijs-jacques-engelbrecht-2-whale-cottage-portfolio\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/hemelhuijs-jacques-engelbrecht-2-whale-cottage-portfolio-150x150.jpg?resize=150%2C150\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/hemelhuijs-jacques-engelbrecht-2-whale-cottage-portfolio.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/usr\/www\/users\/whalec\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/hemelhuijs-jacques-engelbrecht-2-whale-cottage-portfolio.jpg?zoom=2&amp;resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/usr\/www\/users\/whalec\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/hemelhuijs-jacques-engelbrecht-2-whale-cottage-portfolio.jpg?zoom=3&amp;resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jacques told me that he is the creator of crockery chandeliers, which I first saw at Manna, and he also made the three modern chandeliers with crockery from the Dutch East India Company for the new <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/franschhoek\/restaurant-review-pierneef-a-la-motte-is-a-work-of-art\/\">Pierneef\u00a0\u00e0\u00a0 La Motte.<\/a><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 There are no crockery chandeliers at Hemelhuijs.\u00a0 Not only is Jacques an interior designer and restaurateur, but he is also a restaurant consultant, helping others to set up new restaurants.\u00a0\u00a0 On the ceiling is a large rectangular white structure, on which Jacques created images, &#8216;like a 5-year child having fun and playing&#8217;, he explained.\u00a0\u00a0 I asked him which his favourite restaurant is, and he immediately said it is his home, having eggs on toast.\u00a0 He most regularly goes to Chef Pon&#8217;s in Gardens, for its predictability, nothing about the menu or the food changing.<\/p>\n<p>Business has been good to date, and lunches tend to be fully booked, mainly by female supporters, rather than city businessmen, as Jacques had expected.\u00a0 Many of the clients are ex-Manna friends.\u00a0 The A3 white menu looks just like that which Manna first used, and on one side it says simply: &#8220;Hemelhuijs: Everyday Luxury&#8221;, a nice and simple positioning.\u00a0\u00a0 Breakfast is served all day, and most of the menu items\u00a0are relatively standard dishes with one surprise ingredient, giving them a creative twist.\u00a0\u00a0 The wine selection is very small and focused, the &#8220;boutique house wine&#8221; being Henry\u00a0Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz, made by Hennie Andrews near Napier, not only a good wine maker, but the original bread\u00a0baker at Manna.\u00a0 Two sparkling wines are served: Graham Beck Brut Ros\u00c3\u00a9 and Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel, reasonably priced at R35\/R160.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/hemelhuijs-salmon-asparagus-whale-cottage-portfolio.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-13766\" title=\"hemelhuijs-salmon-asparagus-whale-cottage-portfolio\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/hemelhuijs-salmon-asparagus-whale-cottage-portfolio-150x150.jpg?resize=150%2C150\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/hemelhuijs-salmon-asparagus-whale-cottage-portfolio.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/usr\/www\/users\/whalec\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/hemelhuijs-salmon-asparagus-whale-cottage-portfolio.jpg?zoom=2&amp;resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/usr\/www\/users\/whalec\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/hemelhuijs-salmon-asparagus-whale-cottage-portfolio.jpg?zoom=3&amp;resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>The menu has no dishes costing more than R90, for Baked salmon trout, pine nuts, dried cranberries and grapefruit butter.\u00a0\u00a0 I ordered Fresh asparagus, smoked salmon and a wonderful hollandaise sauce (R70), served with home-baked rye bread, which I dunked in the sauce, to mop it up.\u00a0 The white asparagus spears\u00a0were lightly blanched, making them super crunchy.\u00a0 The dish looked beautiful in the black bowl.\u00a0 For breakfast\/brunch one can order fruit and yoghurt (R40); poached eggs, prosciutto, artichoke and hollandaisse sauce (R55); scrambled egg, salmon and toasted apple cake! (R50); and omelette and maple syrup glazed bacon, figs and goat&#8217;s cheese! (R55).\u00a0 Salads cost R55 &#8211; R65.\u00a0\u00a0 Marzipan and dried apricot roasted chicken, a definite for the next visit, costs R 60; slow roasted lamb ribs cost R75; and the Hemelhuijs burger with creamed mushrooms and poached egg costs R70.\u00a0\u00a0 Crostini with various toppings range from R35 for mozzarella and tomato, to R50 for chicken and avocado.\u00a0 The duck liver pat\u00c3\u00a9 and preserved orange also sounded wonderful (R45).\u00a0\u00a0 Balsamic vinegar and olive oil (Hamilton Russell) are served in the most exquisite glass caraf\u00c3\u00a9s, the olive oil one containing a herb sprig, giving it a special touch and taste.\u00a0 The cappuccino (R17)\u00a0was served with &#8216;anys-beskuit&#8217;, three generous helpings, at no charge.<\/p>\n<p>I will be returning to heavenly Hemelhuijs\u00a0for a breakfast later this week.\u00a0 Jacques was very generous with his time and information.\u00a0\u00a0 The business card says: &#8220;Wholesome food, freshly made juices, artisan home ware, delicious daily bakes&#8217;.<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/hemelhuijs-chicken-and-cherries-whale-cottage-portfolio.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-13925\" title=\"hemelhuijs-chicken-and-cherries-whale-cottage-portfolio\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/hemelhuijs-chicken-and-cherries-whale-cottage-portfolio-150x150.jpg?resize=150%2C150\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/hemelhuijs-chicken-and-cherries-whale-cottage-portfolio.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/usr\/www\/users\/whalec\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/hemelhuijs-chicken-and-cherries-whale-cottage-portfolio.jpg?zoom=2&amp;resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/usr\/www\/users\/whalec\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/hemelhuijs-chicken-and-cherries-whale-cottage-portfolio.jpg?zoom=3&amp;resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>POSTSCRIPT 6\/11<\/strong>:\u00a0 I have been back to Hemelhuijs twice since writing the review earlier this week, having the scrambled egg and salmon breakfast dish, as well as the most wonderful roast chicken with cherries, rocket cream, and marzipan and dried apricot stuffing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>POSTSCRIPT 13\/4:<\/strong>\u00a0 I went to look at the dinner at Hemelhuijs last night (only open on Wednesdays), but had to wait until 19h00 for it to open, so went to Keenw\u00e4, the Peruvian restaurant close by first, as they open at 18h30.\u00a0 I ordered what sounded like a nice watercress and poached egg salad, at R55 &#8211; exhibition at the Freeworld Design Centre next door.\u00a0 The menu at Hemelhuijs was changed yesterday, and prices are creeping dangerously close to R100 &#8211; they had used the lunch menu and not their Wednesday evening menu.\u00a0\u00a0 While delicious, the three &#8216;frikadelle&#8217;
