\"\"<\/a>S.Pellegrino has announced the Top 10 Young Chef 2020 Edition chefs, of which seven of the ten finalists for the Africa and Middle East region are from South Africa, spread around the country, but none from Cape Town. Kayla-Ann Osborn from Chefs Table made the Top 20 Eat Out List last year, and was announced its The Rising Star in 2017.<\/p>\n

S.Pellegrino Announces Initial Line-up of Young Candidates Selected For The S.Pellegrino Young Chef 2020 Edition <\/i><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Cape Town, South Africa, 10th<\/sup>  June 2019<\/a><\/span><\/strong> \u2013 135<\/a> young chef candidates from 12 regions, representing 50 countries, are now one step closer to reaching the S.Pellegrino Young Chef 2020 Grand Finale. There were over 2,400 applicants from all over the world who wanted to take part in this globally renowned competition to find the world\u2019s best young chef, and of those 135 who successfully reached the semi-finals seven are from South Africa.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Each young chef\u2019s application and signature dish was evaluated by culinary experts at the World\u2019s Leading International Educational and Training Centre for Italian Cuisine, ALMA, who are in charge of the candidate selection. ALMA\u2019s selection process hinged on three key criteria: technical skills, creativity and a personal belief<\/strong> in the transformative power of gastronomy as a device for positive change in society. <\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe have had the pleasure of collaborating with S.Pellegrino Young Chef since the very first edition, and every time we are amazed by the variety of ideas and the great passion shown by the candidates<\/span>\u201d, said Andrea Sinigaglia, General Manager of ALMA. \u201cFor this edition we selected 135 young talents and we are excited to see how they will perform first on a local, and then on a global scale. Good luck to all of them!<\/span>\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

Applications for the 2020 edition of the global competition grew by 20% compared to the past edition, m<\/span>oreover, the percentage of women registered among the candidates increased to more than 10%<\/strong> – a number that needs to grow, but that shows the first results of the commitment taken by S.Pellegrino for <\/span>gender balance and inclusivity<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Between August and December 2019<\/strong>, the candidates of each region will compete in the regional challenges. Each region will have a jury composed of leading independent chefs \u2013 which in the past have included luminaries such as David Higgs and Chantel Dartnall \u2013 who will judge the candidates\u2019 signature dishes and <\/span>select the regional winners of the <\/span>four awards<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

South Africa is well represented in the Regional Finals for the Africa and Middle East region, with seven out of ten places awarded to young chefs from some of South Africa\u2019s top restaurants. They will be following in the footsteps of Vusumuzi Ndlovu \u2013 then at the Marabi Club in Joburg \u2013 who, having won the regional final in Dubai, went on to achieve the accolade of being recognised as one of the top seven young chefs in the world at the Grand Finale in Milan last year.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

The semi-finalists just announced by S.Pellegrino Young Chef for Africa and Middle East are:<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

  4. Daniel Payne: View Restaurant at The Four Seasons Hotel, Johannesburg<\/i><\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Marcus Gericke: Qunu at The Saxon Hotel, Johannesburg<\/i><\/span><\/li>\n
  6. Meshen Pillay: Reuben\u2019s at The Capital Moloko, Johannesburg<\/i><\/span><\/li>\n
  7. Paul Thinus Prinsloo: The Restaurant at Waterkloof, Somerset West<\/i><\/span><\/li>\n
  8. Elissa Abou Tasse: Maroun Chedid S.A.L, Beirut, Lebanon<\/i><\/span><\/li>\n
  9. Aytekin Yama\u00e7: Hezarfen Restaurant, Taksim, Turkey<\/i><\/span><\/li>\n
  10. Martim Moreau Maita: The Park Hyatt, Abu Dhabi Hotel, United Arab Emirates<\/i><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    By the end of December 2019, whichever of these Young Chefs become official finalists, will then move on to the Grand Finale<\/strong> to be held in June 2020<\/strong>. Throughout the months of preparation for the competition, each finalist will be accompanied by their Mentor Chefs<\/strong>, who will provide them with guidance on how to improve their signature dishes and support them in their preparation for the international finals.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n
