The BizCommunity report shares that Pick n Pay has created \u2018nude walls\u2019 in these select trial stores, selling twelve fruits and vegetables loose, clearly copying Woolworths, who do so to a limited extent. The loose sold items include two mushroom varieties, chilies, cocktail tomatoes, baby cabbage, mielies, green beans, and more, but these are all vegetables. In addition, the retailer will sell about 35 fruits and vegetables it has already been selling loose. It plans to expand the range of loosely-sold fruits and vegetables, currently only representing 10% of sales in this department. <\/p>\n

Customers can use paper bags in which to place their selected fruits and vegetables, available in this department, buy a reusable netted bag for R7,50, or bring their own see-through (plastic!) bag for the loose items. <\/p>\n

Pick n Pay\u2019s Paula Disberry is quoted as saying that the retailer needs to balance reducing plastic waste, and food waste as a result of selling items loose. Loosely sold items have been less popular in the past, but the plastic-free consumer consciousness is growing. <\/p>\n

The retailer is looking to remove labels affixed onto \u2018hardy vegetable\u2019 skins, laser printing the sell-by date, supplier code, and Pick n Pay logo, labels having a plastic backing, enhancing the stores\u2019 plastic-free drive. The plastic bags for vegetable and fruit in the Pick n Pay stores are the lightest in our county, at 30 microns. <\/p>\n

The fruit and vegetable wall trial stores are the V&A Waterfront, Claremont, Gardens, Constantia, Longbeach Mall, Kenilworth, Pinelands, and Glen Garry in Cape Town; Nicol, Bedfordview, and Benmore in Johannesburg; Faerie Glen Hyper in Pretoria; and Hyper Durban North in Durban. <\/p>\n
