My focus in this report is on Cuban cocktails. The majority of these have rum at the heart, the national alcoholic beverage of Cuba. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I had learnt that Bacardi rum originated in Cuba, but due to political reasons the company moved to the Bahamas. The brand is no longer sold in Cuba, it being predominantly Havana <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/58A7AA19-F9E6-4760-BAA7-B3E77842D75C.png?ssl=1\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-202242\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/58A7AA19-F9E6-4760-BAA7-B3E77842D75C.png?resize=96%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"96\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/58A7AA19-F9E6-4760-BAA7-B3E77842D75C.png?resize=96%2C300&amp;ssl=1 96w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/58A7AA19-F9E6-4760-BAA7-B3E77842D75C.png?resize=64%2C200&amp;ssl=1 64w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/58A7AA19-F9E6-4760-BAA7-B3E77842D75C.png?w=127&amp;ssl=1 127w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 96px) 100vw, 96px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>Club (there are 3, &nbsp;7, and 15 year aged variants), as well as Ron Santiago de Cuba, Santero Aguardiente De Cuba, Legendario Ron Dorado, and Legendario Elixer De Cuba rums which are available. Locals will drink cheaper rums.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I learnt that Cuban rums are lighter than those from Jamaica, Barbados, and Puerto Rico. Also, that Havana Club 3 year old is the \u2018hallmark\u2019 of Cuban rum, is \u2018iconic\u2019, its three year old white rum unique in not having been copied by any other distillery. It has hints of vanilla, caramelised pear, and smoked oak, and regarded as being perfect to make a Mojito. The 7 year old variant of this brand should not go into cocktails, and should be savoured neat. It has flavour notes of Cuban tobacco, sweet fruits, and vanilla. The 15 year variant is a limited edition, and costs about $200 per bottle. The distillate, a clear liquid, is then usually aged in <a title=\"Oak\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oak\">oak<\/a> barrels.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>The majority of the world&#8217;s rum production occurs in the <a title=\"Caribbean\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Caribbean\">Caribbean<\/a> and <a title=\"Latin America\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Latin_America\">Latin America<\/a>. Rum is also produced in numerous other countries.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Rums are produced in various grades. Light rums are commonly used in <a title=\"Cocktail\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cocktail\">cocktails<\/a>, whereas &#8220;golden&#8221; and &#8220;dark&#8221; rums were typically consumed <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Straight up (bartending)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Straight_up_(bartending)\">straight or neat<\/a>, iced (&#8220;<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"On the rocks\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/On_the_rocks\">on the rocks<\/a>&#8220;), or used for cooking, but are now commonly consumed with mixers. Premium rums are also available, made to be consumed either straight or iced.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Rum plays a part in the culture of most islands of the <a title=\"West Indies\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/West_Indies\">West Indies<\/a> as well as in <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Canadian Maritimes\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canadian_Maritimes\">The Maritimes<\/a> and <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Newfoundland\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Newfoundland\">Newfoundland<\/a>. This drink has famous associations with the <a title=\"Royal Navy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Royal_Navy\">Royal Navy<\/a>(where it was mixed with water or beer to make <a title=\"Grog\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grog\">grog<\/a>) and <a title=\"Piracy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Piracy\">piracy<\/a> (where it was consumed as <a title=\"Bumbo\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bumbo\">bumbo<\/a>). Rum has also served as a popular medium of economic exchange, used to help fund enterprises such as <a title=\"Slavery\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Slavery\">slavery<\/a> (see <a title=\"Triangular trade\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Triangular_trade\">Triangular trade<\/a>), organized crime, and military insurgencies (e.g., the <a title=\"American Revolution\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Revolution\">American Revolution<\/a> and Australia&#8217;s <a title=\"Rum Rebellion\" href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rum_Rebellion\">Rum Rebellion<\/a>).\u2018<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b><u>Cuban cocktails&nbsp;<\/u><\/b><\/p>\n<p>#. <u>Mojito<\/u>: &nbsp;sugar, mint leaves, lime juice, ice, and rum. It is synonymous with author Ernest Hemingway and El Floridita in Havana, where a strawberry daiquiri is served, at 6 CUCs (R90), but it does come with live Cuban music and the bestest fried banana chips. It is made with white rum, lime juice, and sugar or syrup. Hemingway loved his daiquiris with grapefruit, maraschino liqueur, and no sugar.
