<\/a>I was alerted to the campaign by the Mushroom Farmers Association of South Africa in support of Breast Cancer Survivors through a media statement, informing that the Association is selling its mushrooms in pink punnets at all\u00a0Pick n Pay stores around the country during October, R1 of every punnet sold going to #ReachforRecovery.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
The non-profit organisation Reach for Recovery <\/span>(R4R) i<\/span>s funded each year by the<\/span> Power of Pink campaign<\/span>, a <\/span>South African Mushroom Farmers\u2019 Association\u2019s (SAMFA) <\/span>initiative.\u00a0<\/span>R1 from every <\/span>pink <\/span>punnet of fresh mushrooms sold <\/span>at Pick n Pay stores <\/span>during <\/span>October is donated to R<\/span>4R\u2019s <\/span>Ditto Project, its\u00a0<\/span>objective being to raise funds\u00a0<\/span>to provide free silicone prostheses to breast cancer survivors who cannot afford reconstruction after a mastectomy. <\/span><\/p>\n The <\/span>Power<\/span> of Pink <\/span>campaign<\/span> has provided 8000 silicone prostheses to <\/span>financially strapped \u2018To our astonishment\u00a0<\/i><\/span>2020 saw the highest amount raised since the <\/span>campaign<\/span>\u2019s inception. \u00a0Big hearted South Africans contributed just under R700\u00a0000.<\/span>00<\/span> despite their own financial hardships brought on by a year of lockdowns and job cuts. <\/span>We <\/span>and the <\/span>Ditto Project r<\/span>ecipients have been truly humbled by this generosity\u2019, <\/i>said \u00a0Stephn\u00e9 Jacobs, Reach for Recovery\u2019s National Chairperson<\/span><\/p>\n \u2018We couldn\u2019t be <\/i><\/span>prouder<\/span> of our association with Reach for Recovery\u2019s Ditto Project.\u00a0<\/span>The dedication of every <\/span>R4R v<\/span>olunteer \u2013 a breast cancer survivor herself \u2013 and the immense kindness of all South Africans who support the campaign is such restorative testimony to the goodness that lives in people.\u2019, <\/i>added \u00a0SAMFA Chairperson, Ross Richardson.<\/span><\/p>\n \u2018Whilst f<\/i><\/span>resh mushrooms and breast cancer have a strong humanitarian connection in South Afric<\/span>a<\/span>, <\/span>there is another scientific <\/span>link between fresh mushrooms and the fight against breast cancer<\/span>. <\/span><\/i>In 2010, the Beckman Institute at the City of Hope Cancer Centre in California found that eating just 10g of mushrooms a day more than halved people\u2019s risk of developing breast cancer.
