\"\"<\/a>The recession has taken its toll, and a number of restaurants have closed down.\u00a0 Interestingly, a number of chefs are moving too, an unusually high staff turnover, some of the movements due to the restaurant closures. \u00a0It is noticeable that many restaurants which opened earlier this year have closed their doors already. \u00a0Despite the recession, new restaurants have opened or are in the process of opening (we have previously listed restaurants which opened and closed earlier this year<\/a><\/strong><\/span>).\u00a0 We will update the list of restaurant openings\/closures\/changes regularly, and welcome contributions:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Cape Town<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/span>F.east Indian Restaurant<\/strong> <\/span>has opened on the corner Long and Bloem Streets, in Cape Town<\/span><\/p>\n

*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Bean There Fair Trade Coffee<\/strong> has opened on Wale Street, two doors down from Honest Chocolate<\/span><\/p>\n

*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What\u2019s On Eatery<\/strong> on Watson Street has closed down <\/span><\/p>\n

*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Chef <\/span>Christo Pretorius<\/span><\/strong>, previously of De Huguenot, has started as Sous Chef at 1800 Restaurant<\/strong> at the Cape Royale Luxury Hotel<\/span><\/p>\n

*\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0Wildflour<\/strong> <\/span>has closed down on Regent Road in Sea Point.<\/span><\/p>\n

*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 221 Waterfront<\/strong> <\/strong><\/span>has closed down in the V&A Waterfront, and a ‘concept store’\u00a0McDonald\u2019s <\/strong>is opening in its space<\/span><\/p>\n

*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Dash Restaurant<\/a><\/strong> at the Queen Victoria Hotel has lost its Chef Oliver Cattermole (now at Le Franschhoek Hotel), Manager Darren Morgan (now at the One&Only Cape Town), and F&B Manager Alton van Biljon.\u00a0 Executive Chef Stephen Templeton has also left for a position in the Caribbean.<\/span><\/p>\n

*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Harbour House<\/strong> <\/strong><\/span>has <\/strong><\/span>opened a branch in the V & A Waterfront (right), where Fisherman\u2019s Choice was\"\"<\/a>

*\u00a0\u00a0 Clarke\u2019s Bar and Dining Room<\/strong> has opened, two doors away from Bird\u2019s Caf\u00e9 on Bree Street, as an American-style diner, owned by Lyndall Maunder, ex-Superette<\/span><\/p>\n

*\u00a0\u00a0 A late night dinner and dance restaurant will open in the ex-Brio<\/strong> <\/strong><\/span>space, with a chef from St Tropez, and a DJ from Cannes<\/span><\/p>\n

*\u00a0\u00a0 Chez Chez<\/span><\/strong> <\/span><\/span><\/a>has opened as an Espresso and Cheesecake Bar (serving 13 different cheesecakes), 3 De Lorentz Street, Tamboerskloof.<\/span><\/p>\n

*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Black Pearl<\/strong> <\/strong><\/span>is the new name of the Tapas, Restaurant and Cocktail Bar, with new owners, of the ex-Seven Sins on Kloof Street.<\/span><\/p>\n

* \u00a0 <\/span>Bistro on Rose<\/strong> <\/span>has opened at 35 Rose Street<\/span><\/p>\n

* \u00a0 <\/span>Rhapsody\u2019s<\/strong> <\/span>franchise restaurant, mainly in Pretoria, has opened next door to Caf\u00e9 Extrablatt in Green Point, where Doppio Zero used to be, with Exceutive Chef Claire Brown, previously with Ginja and Pierneef \u00e0\u00a0La Motte<\/span><\/p>\n

* \u00a0 <\/span>Wale Rose Lifestyle<\/strong> <\/span>has opened in Bo-Kaap, on the corner of Wale and Rose Street, serving Cape Malay as well as <\/span>\u2018cosmopolitan food\u2019.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Andy Fenner (JamieWho?) and friends have opened <\/span>Frankie Fenner Meat Merchants<\/strong> in Metal Lane, 8 <\/span> Kloof Street, opposite McDonald\u2019s. \u00a0They are stocking Farmer Angus McIntosh’s beef, Richard Bosman’s pork, and eggs and chicken from Simply Wholesome. \u00a0A barista will make coffee, and Jason will bake special chorizo muffins and bacon brioche for them. \u00a0Saturday markets in the parking area outside may be on the cards.<\/span>\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Renamed\u00a0<\/strong>Blues Beach House<\/strong> restaurant (right) in Camps Bay has re-opened, having been reduced in size by about half, and changed its menu to \u2018beach food\u2019*<\/p>\n

*\u00a0\u00a0 Chef Leigh Trout, ex- <\/span>Mange Tout<\/span><\/a><\/strong> <\/span>at the Mont Rochelle Hotel, has bought Bird Caf\u00e9 and Gourmet Eatery<\/span><\/a><\/strong> <\/strong><\/span>on Bree Street, with Kevin Mink. <\/span><\/p>\n

*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Chef Jacques de Jager, has left <\/span>Salt Restaurant<\/strong>, setting up a consultancy.\u00a0 Chef Daniel Botha from Le Franschhoek Hotel has taken over his job.<\/span><\/p>\n

*\u00a0\u00a0 Cocoa Oola<\/strong> <\/span>has opened on Kloof Street, where <\/span>Oishii<\/strong> <\/span>used to be<\/span><\/p>\n

*\u00a0\u00a0 Sommelier <\/span>Neil Grant, <\/strong>ex-sommelier<\/strong> <\/span>of Rust en Vrede, is opening Burrata, a new Italian restaurant in the Old Biscuit Mill in mid-February<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Societi Brasserie<\/strong> has opened in Constantia<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Manna Epicure<\/strong> is now owned by Betsie van der Merwe from Johannesburg<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Luke Dale-Roberts, <\/strong>just crowned<\/strong> <\/strong><\/strong>Eat Out<\/strong> Top Chef, <\/strong>ha<\/strong>s opened the Pot Luck Club<\/strong>,<\/a> a Tapas Bar next to The Test Kitchen.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Chef Scottie Henry is the new chef at Sinatra restaurant<\/strong> at the Pepper Club Hotel<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 The Mussel Bar<\/a><\/strong> has opened on the Victoria Street level of the Bay Hotel in Camps Bay.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0Peter Tempelhoff of the McGrath Collection, and The Green House<\/strong> in the Cellars Hohenhort Hotel \u00a0specifically, has been honoured with the title Grand Chef of Relais & Chateaux. \u00a0He is the first Cape Town and only the third South African chef to receive this honour.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 The Bungalow<\/strong> has opened as a 400-seater restaurant where La Med used to be, part of the Kovensky Group, also owning Pepenero, Paranga, The Kove and Zenzero.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Chef Brian Smit is now at Tides Restaurant<\/strong> at the Bay Hotel in Camps Bay, previously with Noisy Oyster in Paternoster<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 La Belle Caf\u00e9 & Bakery<\/strong> has opened in the Alphen Boutique Hotel.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 5 Rooms Restaurant<\/strong> has opened at the Alphen Boutique Hotel<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Gypsy Caf\u00e9<\/strong> has opened in Observatory<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Kuzina in the Cape Quarter has been sold, and whilst still serving Greek food, it is now called Rocca.<\/strong><\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Sabrina’s<\/strong> has opened where Depasco<\/strong> was, at the corner of Kloof and Long Street<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Arts Caf\u00e9<\/strong> has opened at Artscape.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Chef Craig Paterson has started as Executive Chef at Dash <\/strong>(Queen Victoria Hotel), the V&A Hotel, and Dock House<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Caveau <\/strong>at the Josephine Mill<\/strong> has closed down<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Caf\u00e9 Sofia in Green Point has become Slainte<\/strong><\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Don Pedro’s<\/strong> in Woodstock will re-open on 14 February, under Madame Zingara management<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Madame Zingara<\/strong> is said to be re-opening in its original building on Loop Street<\/p>\n

* \"\"<\/a><\/span>The Kitchen and The Tasting Room<\/strong> has <\/span>opened on Maison wine estate<\/a> in Franschhoek, with Chef Arno Janse van Rensburg (ex Ginja, Myoga), and Manager Julian Smith (ex Azure, Grande Provence,\u00a0 Waterkloof, Pierneef a La Motte) (left)<\/span><\/p>\n
