\"Four<\/a>No significant events have been planned to attract visitors to Cape Town and the Winelands this winter, and it appears to be the worst winter ever experienced by the hospitality industry in the Cape. \u00a0A surprise is the number of restaurant changes, as well as the the movement of staff \u00a0between restaurants. \u00a0 Given the poor winter business, many restaurants have taken\/are taking generous winter breaks. This list of restaurant openings and closings is\u00a0updated continuously,\u00a0<\/strong>as we receive new information:<\/p>\n

Restaurant Openings<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Four & Twenty Caf\u00e9<\/strong>\u00a0and Pantry<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0has opened in Wynberg<\/p>\n

* \u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong>The Crypt Jazz Restaurant\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>has opened below St George\u2019s Cathedral.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Orphanage Cocktail Emporium<\/strong>\u00a0is opening\u00a0Orphanage Club<\/strong>\u00a0upstairs, with 1920\u2019s style music by live performers, later this year.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Cavalli<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>restaurant on the stud farm on the R44 must be opening shortly, as Carl Habel has left the Mount Nelson Hotel as Restaurant Manager and Sommelier to join the restaurant.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Shake your Honey\u00a0<\/strong>is to open in the original\u00a0Madame Zingara<\/strong>\u00a0building on Loop Street next year, after renovations commence later this year, according to an\u00a0iolTravel\u00a0<\/strong>report. \u00a0The \u2018vibrant spirit of India\u2019\u00a0<\/em>is to be reflected in the 5-storey building, with a theatre, markets, restaurants, and shops.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Burger King<\/strong>\u00a0has opened its (second) Tygervalley branch. Branches at Cavendish and at Grandwest are to open soon. * \u00a0 A new restaurant and micro brewery is to open next door to The Bromwell in Woodstock (name not yet known).<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 The\u00a0Harbour House<\/strong>\u00a0group is opening La Parada<\/strong> Spanish Tapas restaurant on Bree Street, with a subterranean bar.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Goloso Pizzeria<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>has opened in Regent Road Sea Point.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Chef\u00a0Reuben Riffel<\/strong>\u00a0is to open an artisanal beer bar. * \u00a0\u00a0The Re:Public<\/strong>\u00a0has opened in Hout Bay.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Lounge on Main<\/strong>\u00a0is to open in the Cape Royale Luxury Hotel in Green Point<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Sinns on Long Street<\/strong>\u00a0has opened.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0BBQ<\/strong>\u00a0has opened within Simon\u2019s at Groot Constantia, only open on Friday and Saturday evenings, with braai and live music.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Woodcutters Arms<\/strong>\u00a0has opened in Hout Bay.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Bukhara<\/strong>\u00a0has opened in the V&A Waterfront. * \u00a0\u00a0Haiku<\/strong>\u00a0has opened in the V&A Waterfront.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Pomo Doro Pizzeria & Ristorante<\/strong>\u00a0has opened in Steenberg.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Reuben\u2019s Paternoster<\/strong>\u00a0is opening at Abalone House in October!<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Tours Brasserie\u00a0<\/strong>is said to open in the ex-Green Dolphin in the V&A Waterfront. * \u00a0\u00a0Platform 1 Eatery<\/strong>\u00a0has opened at Winters Drift Tasting Station in Elgin.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Pure Good<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0has opened downstairs in the Associated Magazines building opposite Parliament, and is owned by Shannon Smuts, the first\u00a0MasterChef SA Finalist\u00a0<\/a>to have been eliminated.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Vida e Caffe<\/strong>\u00a0is opening in Belvedere Square in Claremont.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0The Creamery Caf\u00e9<\/strong>\u00a0is opening in Newlands Quarter in Dean Street in August.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The Clubhouse<\/strong>\u00a0has opened in Constantia<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Beerhouse<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0has opened on Long Street, with 16 beers on tap and 99 bottled beers from around the world.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 TriBakery<\/strong> is opening on 22 Bree Street in August.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 La Frasca<\/strong> has opened in Gardens.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Vida e Caffe<\/strong> is said to be opening coffee shops at Shell petrol stations, 40 initially and 300 in total.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Umi<\/strong> Asian restaurant is opening in the Camps Bay Promenade, owned by The Kovensky Group.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Black Pig Restaurant<\/strong> is opening on Kloof Street.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Tokai Italian Kitchen<\/strong> is to open in the Newlands Quarter.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Caf\u00e9 Alfredo<\/strong> has opened in the Alfred Mall in the V&A Waterfront.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Mumbai Caf\u00e9<\/strong>\u00a0has opened below Jewel of India on the corner of Wale and Rose Streets.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Tipples Bar & Gril<\/strong>l is opening in Durbanville. * \u00a0 Diesel & Creme<\/strong>, a diner, restaurant, and coffee shop, is opening on the R62 in Barrydale.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 The\u00a0House of Machines<\/strong><\/a> has opened on Shortmarket Street, building motorcycles, offering good Evil Twin coffee, and serving very healthy food.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Baked Bistro<\/strong> is opening another branch in the Groot Constantia Centre<\/p>\n

Restaurant Closures<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

* \u00a0Caf\u00e9 Benedict<\/strong>\u00a0has closed down in Franschhoek.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Cotage Fromage<\/strong>\u00a0at Vrede en Lust has closed down.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Caviar<\/strong>\u00a0has closed down in the V&A Waterfront.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Umami<\/strong>\u00a0in Stellenbosch has closed down.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The Common Room\u00a0<\/strong>at Le Quartier Fran\u00e7ais in Franschhoek has closed down.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 It’s a House<\/strong> in De Waterkant has closed.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Casparus<\/strong> in Stellenbosch is possibly closing down.<\/p>\n

Restaurant staff\/venue changes<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

*\u00a0<\/strong>De Oude Bank Bakkerij<\/strong>\u00a0has expanded and moved to the corner of Church and Bird Street, opposite Vida e Caffe, with De Brasserij beer and wine bar, and a retail section selling charcuterie and fresh meats, home-made ice cream, coffee, breads, organic fruit and vegetables, dairy products, and wines, collectively called Schoon<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/a>De Companje<\/span><\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

* \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Caf\u00e9 Le Chocolatier<\/strong>\u00a0has closed down in Franschhoek, and has re-opened inside\u00a0<\/strong>Apprentice<\/strong>\u00a0in Stellenbosch. \u00a0A second branch is opening on Church Street in Stellenbosch.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0Awestruck<\/strong>\u00a0has opened in the ex-Caveau space on Bree Street.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Sage Restaurant<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0has moved to Chabivin Champagne and MCC House on the Blaauwklippen Road.<\/p>\n

*\u00a0<\/strong>Massimo\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0in Hout Bay has changed its name to\u00a0<\/strong>Amici di Massimo\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0for 10 \u2013 12 months, to be run by Johan, while Massimo undergoes medical treatment in Italy. It will revert back to Massimo\u2019s when they return.<\/p>\n

*\u00a0El Burro<\/strong>\u00a0has opened Cabrito bar<\/strong>, in a section of the downstairs ex-Rhapsody space.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 The\u00a0Odyssey Gastropub<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>has opened where French Toast & Wine Bar was on Bree Street, now run by Blues\u2019 owners.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Wakame<\/strong>\u00a0sister restaurant from Johannesburg, called\u00a0Koi Restaurant,<\/strong>\u00a0will be opening at the Ambassador Hotel in August, where Salt was.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Sensei Deon de Jongh has moved from Okamai at Glenwood to\u00a0Funiki Japanese Eatery<\/strong>\u00a0at\u00a0L\u2019ermitage<\/strong>\u00a0in Franschhoek. * \u00a0 Wolfgang Leyrer is handing over to Ansgar Flaatten as MD of\u00a0All\u00e9e Bleue<\/strong>\u00a0in Franschhoek in September.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Luke and Jessie Grant (ex-Nook in Stellenbosch) have taken over\u00a0The Table at De Meye.<\/strong><\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Peter Veldsman\u2019s\u00a0Emily\u2019s,<\/strong>\u00a0previously in Woodstock and the V&A Waterfront, is opening at 55 Kloof Street.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Chef Henrico Grobbelaar has left the\u00a0Twelve Apostles Hotel<\/strong>, and Christo Pretorius is the new Acting Executive Chef. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Chef Chris Mare<\/strong>\u00a0of Blaauwklippen is moving to the Twelve Apostles Hotel as Executive Sous Chef.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Ronel Smidt is the new Manager at\u00a0Catharina\u2019s\u00a0<\/strong>at Steenberg, previously at Dear Me.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Roberto\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0on Long Street has closed down, Chef Roberto de Carvalho having returned to the One&Only Hotel as Executive Chef.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 The Tecklenburgs have closed down their No 6 Restaurant at Welbedacht, and have re-opened\u00a0Oude Wellington Restaurant.<\/strong><\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Chef Eric Bulpitt<\/strong>\u00a0has left The Roundhouse, and consulted to Harbour Hose for two months before opening his own restaurant ‘in the Overberg. \u00a0He is taking over the former Heaven at Newton Johnson, as Chef Stefan Louw has left the restaurant, and renaming it The Restaurant at Newton Johnson<\/strong>. George Jardine<\/strong> of Jordan’s is his business partner and financier. \u00a0It opens mid-September.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Chef Louisa Greeff has moved from Guardian Peak Restaurant to\u00a0Durbanville Hills Winery Restaurant<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Morgenster<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is planning a new restaurant with an (very big name) international partner, a Caf\u00e9, a Deli, and accommodation, a project which is still in development phase, but is planned to roll out over the next 13 months. \u00a0Sofia\u2019s<\/strong> closed down on the wine and olive estate earlier this year.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Eleanor Niehaus and Warwick Taylor\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0have been appointed as in-house chefs at\u00a0Creation<\/strong>\u00a0wine estate. * \u00a0 Trinity is to change its name to\u00a0Bennett Street Complex.<\/strong><\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Gorgeous Bubbly Bar\u00a0has changed its name to Catharina’s Bubbly Bar<\/strong> at Steenberg.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Mon Plaisir restaurant has closed down at Chamonix<\/strong> wine estate in Franschhoek. Reuben Riffel is the new operator of the planned Bistro, but will not be visible, and he will not name the restaurant after himself. The name is\u00a0Racine,<\/strong>\u00a0it has been announced.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Ivor Jones has been appointed as Head Chef at The Test Kitchen.<\/strong><\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Joanne and Peter Kunz have bought The Original Deli<\/strong> in Hermanus.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Giulia has closed down on Main Road Green Point, and 65 on Main<\/strong><\/a> has opened in its place.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Mynt Caf\u00e9\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0has opened where Bar1 used to be in Camps Bay.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Chef Lapo Magni<\/strong> has left The Odyssey, and is opening his The Drunken Tuscan stand at the Neighbourgoods Market at the Old Biscuit Mill in September.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 De Brasserie<\/strong><\/a> has opened where Kaapzicht was on Beach Road, Strand, and belongs to the Almenkerk wine estate.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Sarah Baker has moved across to the Wholesale division of Wild Peacock<\/strong>, focusing on the supply of artisanal boutique cheeses. \u00a0Ruan Spence is the Manager of the Wild Peacock Emporium.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Robin Thomas<\/strong> has been appointed as Resort Manager at the One&Only Cape Town.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Le Coq is closing down in Franschhoek, and Allora<\/strong> is moving into the space in November, which will also have a hotel at the back of the building.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Michael Brown<\/strong> has been appointed Assistant Pastry Chef at the Taj Cape Town hotel, having studied at Capsicum Culinary Studio in Pretoria, \u00a0and with past experience at Caf\u00e9 Mozart in Johannesburg, Panciera Confectioners, Addison Reserve luxury golf estate in the USA, \u00a0Fresh Meadows golf estate in New York, the Oyster Box Hotel,\u00a0the The Alphen hotel, and the Winchester Mansions Hotel. \u00a0He is offering an Afternoon Tea at the hotel.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Chef Oliver Cattermole<\/strong> of Dish at Le Franschhoek hotel has left and is returning to Cape Town. \u00a0His new venture is still under wraps.<\/p>\n

Restaurant winter breaks<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Heaven<\/strong>\u00a0restaurant will be closed for renovations for two months, opening with Chef\/co-owner Eric Bulpitt in mid-September, with new name The Restaurant.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Shimmy Beach Club<\/strong><\/span><\/a> is closed until mid-September.<\/p>\n
