\"Masterchef-sa-all-finalists-300x169\"<\/a>MasterChef SA Season 2 is the talk of the country, and we have another four weeks of viewing to look forward to. To warm things up a little, we have launched two competitions, the\u00a0first being a prediction of who will win MasterChef SA in episode 26.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

We are also running a\u00a0weekly prize<\/strong>\u00a0for the correct prediction of who our readers think will be chopped out of the MasterChef SA. For the correct prediction of who will leave MasterChef SA in episode 20 on 14 August,\u00a0Pierneef\u00a0\u00e0 La Motte<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0has generously offered a\u00a0R500 voucher\u00a0for two, making the correct prediction.\"\"\u00a0The\u00a0restaurant was featured in episode 10<\/strong><\/a>, when Chef Chris Erasmus conducted a MasterClass, preparing a terrine.<\/p>\n

Pierneef\u00a0\u00e0 La Motte opened almost three years ago, and has made the\u00a0Eat Out\u00a0<\/strong>Top 20 Restaurant shortlist two years running. \u00a0It pays homage to\u00a0the master artist JH Pierneef\"\", and\"Pierneef<\/a>\u00a0to the historical roots of South African cuisine, presented with a\u00a0contemporary twist. \u00a0The restaurant is green in many respects, theming carried through into many different aspects of the restaurant.\u00a0 The furniture outside almost looks custom-made, with a green woven-effect, giving it a nature-look.\u00a0 The placemats are in the shape of a vine leaf.\u00a0 The silver container has a green glass candle holder (as well as beautiful hand-blown glass bottles for the olive oil and balsamic vinegar, and little silver salt and pepper grinders). The Pierneef name and theme comes from the priceless collection of 44 oils and other works by JH Pierneef (1886 \u2013 1957), which La Motte bought from Pierneef\u2019s daughter Marita, who now lives in the United Kingdom.\u00a0 The work is displayed in the Pierneef art gallery on the La Motte property. \u00a0Given that Pierneef is synonymous with the pinnacle of South African art, La Motte honoured the artist by naming the restaurant after him, to demonstrate that they wish to follow his high standards. \u00a0The Pierneef name and art has also been carried over into a new range of La Motte wines, called the Pierneef Collection.\u00a0Some of the collection of 1957 Pierneef lino cuts, which owner Hanneli Rupert had received from her father Dr Anton Rupert\u00a0years ago, have been used\u00a0for the back labels for these wines.<\/p>\n

The restaurant is large, divided into the kitchen section, which opens onto the outside seating deck, allowing one to see Chef Chris and his team hard at work in the super shiny stainless steel kitchen.\u00a0\u00a0 Pierneef\u2019s work has been printed onto the lampshades hanging over the kitchen counter.\u00a0 The interior restaurant section is separated from the kitchen, and is dominated by three chandeliers from which dangle crockery from the Dutch East India Company, which had brought Jan van Riebeeck to Cape Town.\u00a0\u00a0The chandeliers are in blue and white, orange and white, and black, white and gold.\u00a0\u00a0La Motte had bought the valuable crockery collection from a museum, and had the chandeliers custom-made for the restaurant.\u00a0\u00a0 Christo Barnard is the creative interior consultant who did the decor.<\/p>\n

Speaking to\u00a0Hein Koegelenberg, the CEO of La Motte, one is impressed with his warmth and passion for a project that brings pride in South African cuisine art, the return of the Pierneef collection to South Africa\u00a0being the foundation of the restaurant,\u00a0with the related buildings housing the Farm Shop, art galleries and museum, as well as the Tasting Centre, and creating what Hein calls a \u2018tourism destination<\/em>\u2019.\u00a0\u00a0 The menu opens onto a welcome page:\u00a0\u201cWelcome to Pierneef \u00c3\u00a0 La Motte Restaurant.\u00a0 We have pleasure in hosting you and sharing with you our restaurant\u2019s association with one of South Africa\u2019s greatest masters.\u201d\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0Homage is paid to both Pierneef, and to his daughter Marita, who has become a friend of the Koegelenbergs.\u00a0\u201dPierneef\u2019s creativity in portraying the beauty of the South African landscape and architecture\"Pierneef<\/a>\u00a0has served as a model for this restaurant\u2019s creativity in offering cuisine inspired by centuries of variations on cooking \u2013 a unique presentation known as Cape Winelands Cuisine<\/em>\u201d.\u00a0 After extensive research into the origin of South Africa\u2019s cuisine, or \u201cboerekos\u201d<\/em>, from Dutch, Flemish, German\u00a0and Huguenot settlers about 350 years ago, and British settlers 150 years later, about 200 recipes were developed for use in the restaurant over time.\u00a0The cuisine style really is meant to be\u00a0\u201cBoland Boerekos<\/em>\u201d, and the input from\u00a0Professor Hetta\u00a0Claassens, author of \u201cHistory of South African Food<\/em>\u201d,\u00a0was sought to select the recipes. \u00a0The menu is signed by Hein and Hanneli, reflecting their personal involvement. \u00a0Children are catered for as well. \u00a0\u00a0 Foraging is a strong focus, and therefore an\u00a0extensive vegetable and herb garden<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0has been developed on the farm, not only supplying Chef Chris\u2019 kitchen, but top restaurants in the area too.<\/p>\n
