\"Beerhouse<\/a>Despite one of \u00a0the worst winters ever experienced by the Cape hospitality industry, few restaurants have closed down recently. \u00a0 A surprise however is the movement of staff between restaurants. This list of restaurant openings and closings is\u00a0updated continuously,\u00a0<\/strong>as we receive new information:<\/p>\n

Restaurant Openings<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Beerhouse<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0has opened on Long Street, with 16 beers on tap and 99 bottled beers from around the world.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0House of Machines<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0has opened on Shortmarket Street, building motorcycles, offering good Evil Twin coffee, and serving very healthy food.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Pure Good<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0has opened downstairs in the Associated Magazines building opposite Parliament, and is owned by Shannon Smuts, the first\u00a0MasterChef SA Finalist\u00a0<\/a>to have been eliminated.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 The\u00a0Harbour House<\/strong>\u00a0group has opened\u00a0La Parada<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0Spanish Tapas restaurant on Bree Street, with a subterranean bar\/nightclub.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Orphanage Cocktail Emporium<\/strong>\u00a0is opening\u00a0Orphanage Club<\/strong>\u00a0upstairs, with 1920\u2019s style music by live performers, later this year.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Cavalli<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>restaurant on the stud farm on the R44 is opening in October, as Carl Habel<\/strong> has left the Mount Nelson Hotel as Restaurant Manager and Sommelier to join the restaurant. \u00a0Chef Henrico Grobbelaar<\/strong> from the Twelve Apostles is running the kitchen.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Shake your Honey\u00a0<\/strong>is to open in the original\u00a0Madame Zingara<\/strong>\u00a0building on Loop Street next year, after renovations commence later this year, according to an\u00a0iolTravel\u00a0<\/strong>report. \u00a0The \u2018vibrant spirit of India\u2019\u00a0<\/em>is to be reflected in the 5-storey building, with a theatre, markets, restaurants, and shops.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Burger King<\/strong>\u00a0branches at Cavendish and at Grandwest are to open.<\/p>\n

\"\"* \u00a0 A new restaurant and micro brewery is to open next door to The Bromwell in Woodstock (name not yet known).<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Chef\u00a0Reuben Riffel<\/strong>\u00a0is to open an artisanal beer bar.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Lounge on Main<\/strong>\u00a0is to open in the Cape Royale Luxury Hotel in Green Point<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Sinns on Long Street<\/strong>\u00a0has opened.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Woodcutters Arms<\/strong>\u00a0has opened in Hout Bay.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Reuben\u2019s Abalone House <\/strong>has opened in Paternoster!<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Tours Brasserie\u00a0<\/strong>is said to open in the ex-Green Dolphin in the V&A Waterfront, with CHef Oliver cattermole in the kitchen.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0The Creamery Caf\u00e9<\/strong>\u00a0has opened in Newlands Quarter in Dean Street.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0TriBakery<\/strong>\u00a0is opening on 22 Bree Street.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Vida e Caffe<\/strong>\u00a0is said to be opening coffee shops at Shell petrol stations, 40 initially and 300 in total. \u00a0It is opening in Belvedere Square in Claremont.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Umi<\/strong>\u00a0Asian restaurant is opening in the Camps Bay Promenade, owned by The Kovensky Group.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Black Pig Restaurant<\/strong>\u00a0is opening on Kloof Street.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Tokai Italian Kitchen<\/strong>\u00a0is to open in the Newlands Quarter.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Caf\u00e9 Alfredo<\/strong>\u00a0has opened in the Alfred Mall in the V&A Waterfront.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Mumbai Caf\u00e9<\/strong>\u00a0has opened below Jewel of India on the corner of Wale and Rose Streets.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Tipples Bar & Gril<\/strong>l is opening in Durbanville.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Diesel & Creme<\/strong>, a diner, restaurant, and coffee shop, is opening on the R62 in Barrydale.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Baked Bistro<\/strong>\u00a0is opening another branch in the Groot Constantia Centre<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 5 on Lourenford<\/strong> has opened in Somerset West<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Chef Pieter Vlok has opened Mont Marie Restaurant<\/strong> on the Klein DasBosch wine estate of retailer Whitey Basson on the Blaauwklippen Road in Stellenbosch.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Idiom Wines<\/strong> is said to be opening a restaurant in January.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 The Tap Room<\/strong> has opened at Devils’ Peak Brewery<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Engruna Eatery<\/strong> is opening in the same block as La Boheme in Sea Point, a ‘sister restaurant to @La Boheme_cpt. Gourmet Pizzas, Burgers, Craft Beer, Milkshakes. Opening soon<\/em>‘, \u00a0its Twitter Bio informs.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 The Hungry Monk<\/strong> restaurant and The Tipsy Parrot<\/strong> pub have opened in Greyton.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Wakaberry<\/strong> is opening in Cavendish Square.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Caf\u00e9\u00a0Puerto Cabo<\/strong><\/a> has opened on Loop Street, another city centre Spanish eatery and men’s clothing shop.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 I\u00a0\u2665<\/span> my Laundry is opening another branch on Bree Street in October.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Jordan Wines is launching a Deli and Bakery<\/strong> on 27 November.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Pistachio Bistro<\/strong> has opened in Franschhoek, in the decor shop by the same name.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Publik<\/strong> is to open on Church Street, between Bree and Buitengracht Streets, as a wine bar operated by David Cope, with the backing of Neil Pendock<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, it is speculated.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Cr\u00e8me Glace\u00e9 Cold Gold\u00a0<\/strong> is opening in Huguenot Square in Franschhoek on 1 November.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Lucky.Fish & Chips<\/strong> has opened on Bree Street, belongs to Michael Townsend of the Harbour House group.<\/p>\n

Restaurant Closures<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

* \u00a0The Common Room\u00a0<\/strong>at Le Quartier Fran\u00e7ais in Franschhoek has closed down, being transformed into a bar.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0It’s a House<\/strong>\u00a0in De Waterkant has closed.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Casparus<\/strong>\u00a0in Stellenbosch is changing, dropping its name, with Sgt Pepper moving in and Chef Etienne Bonthuys cooking for them.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Constantia Uitsig<\/strong> appears to have been sold, and its restaurant with the same name is closing. \u00a0La Colombe and River Caf\u00e9 remain open.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Deli @ The Square<\/strong> in Paarl is closing down at Frater Square on 30 September. \u00a0A Terbedore Food and Coffee Truck will serve its coffee, Bashews, and light breakfast and lunch options on Mondays – Saturdays.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Leaf Restaurant<\/strong> has closed down, ex-Showroom and Portofino.<\/p>\n

Restaurant staff\/venue changes<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

*\u00a0<\/strong>De Oude Bank Bakkerij<\/strong>\u00a0has expanded and moved to the corner of Church and Bird Street, with De Brasserij beer and wine bar, and a retail section selling charcuterie and fresh meats, home-made ice cream, coffee, breads, organic fruit and vegetables, dairy products, and wines, collectively called\u00a0Schoon<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>De Companje<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

* \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Caf\u00e9 Le Chocolatier<\/strong>\u00a0has closed down in Franschhoek, and has re-opened inside\u00a0<\/strong>Apprentice<\/strong>\u00a0in Stellenbosch. \u00a0A second branch is opening on Church Street in Stellenbosch.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0Awestruck<\/strong>\u00a0has opened in the ex-Caveau space on Bree Street.<\/p>\n

*\u00a0<\/strong>Massimo\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0in Hout Bay has changed its name to\u00a0<\/strong>Amici di Massimo\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0for 10 \u2013 12 months, to be run by Johan, while Massimo undergoes medical treatment in Italy. It will revert back to Massimo\u2019s when they return.<\/p>\n

*\u00a0El Burro<\/strong>\u00a0has opened\u00a0Cabrito bar<\/strong>, in a section of the downstairs ex-Rhapsody space.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Wakame<\/strong>\u00a0sister restaurant from Johannesburg, called\u00a0Koi Restaurant<\/a>,<\/strong>\u00a0has opened at the Ambassador Hotel, where Salt was.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Ansgar Flaatten has taken over as MD of\u00a0All\u00e9e Bleue<\/strong>\u00a0in Franschhoek, from Wolfgang Leyrer.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Luke and Jessie Grant (ex-Nook in Stellenbosch) have taken over\u00a0The Table at De Meye. \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>The former Nook is now called Meraki.<\/strong><\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Peter Veldsman\u2019s\u00a0Emily\u2019s,<\/strong>\u00a0previously in Woodstock and the V&A Waterfront, is opening at 55 Kloof Street.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Chef Henrico Grobbelaar has left the\u00a0Twelve Apostles Hotel<\/strong>, and Christo Pretorius is the new Executive Chef.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Chef Chris Mare<\/strong>\u00a0of Blaauwklippen has moving to the Twelve Apostles Hotel as Executive Sous Chef. \u00a0Chef Stefan Muller<\/strong> has taken over as Executive Chef at Blaauwklippen.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Chef Eric Bulpitt<\/strong>\u00a0has left The Roundhouse, and consulted to Harbour House for two months. He is taking over the former Heaven at Newton Johnson, as Chef Stefan Louw has left, renaming it\u00a0The Restaurant at Newton Johnson<\/strong>.\u00a0George Jardine<\/strong>\u00a0of Jordan’s is his business partner and financier. \u00a0It opens mid-September.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Morgenster<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is planning a new restaurant with an (very big name) international partner, a Caf\u00e9, a Deli, and accommodation, a project which is still in development phase, but is planned to roll out over the next 13 months. \u00a0Sofia\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0closed down on the wine and olive estate earlier this year.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Trinity has changed its name to\u00a0Bennett Street Complex.<\/strong><\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Mon Plaisir restaurant has closed down at\u00a0Chamonix<\/strong>\u00a0wine estate in Franschhoek. Reuben Riffel is the new operator of the planned Bistro, but will not be visible, naming it Racine,<\/strong>\u00a0it has been announced. \u00a0Chef Nico Pretorius is in the kitchen, previously from Reuben’s at One&Only Cape Town.<\/strong><\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Ivor Jones has been appointed as Head Chef at\u00a0The Test Kitchen.<\/strong><\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Joanne and Peter Kunz have bought\u00a0The Original Deli<\/strong>\u00a0in Hermanus. \u00a0It will be renamed Original Deli & Wine Lab<\/strong> from October.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Giulia has closed down on Main Road Green Point, and\u00a065 on Main<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0has opened in its place.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Mynt Caf\u00e9\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0has opened where Bar1 used to be in Camps Bay.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Chef Lapo Magni<\/strong>\u00a0has left The Odyssey<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, and is opening his The Drunken Tuscan stand at the Neighbourgoods Market at the Old Biscuit Mill in September.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0De Brasserie<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0has opened where Kaapzicht was on Beach Road, Strand, and belongs to the Almenkerk wine estate.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Le Coq<\/strong> is closing down in Franschhoek, and\u00a0Allora<\/strong>\u00a0is moving into the space in November, which will also have a hotel at the back of the building.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Michael Brown<\/strong>\u00a0has been appointed Assistant Pastry Chef at the Taj Cape Town hotel. \u00a0He is offering an Afternoon Tea at the hotel.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Chef Oliver Cattermole<\/strong>\u00a0of Dish at Le Franschhoek hotel has left and is returning to Cape Town. \u00a0He is said to be involved in opening a new 160 seater restaurant in the V&A Waterfront, being the former Green Dolphin, now called Mondiall<\/strong> and belongs to Chef Peter Tempelhoff<\/strong>, opening in November.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Executive Chef \u00a0Scott Shepherd<\/strong> has taken over at Le Franschhoek.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Chef Neil Norman has left Dornier Bodega restaurant, and is now at Kove\/Paranga<\/strong> in Camps Bay. \u00a0Chef Daniel George Kotz\u00e9 has taken over as Executive Chef at Bodega.<\/strong><\/p>\n

* \u00a0 All\u00e9e Bleue<\/strong> has leased out its Bistro to Chef Atilla Allmann.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Tascha’s<\/strong> is opening in the V&A Waterfront where Mugg & Bean is.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Chef Frederic Faucheux<\/strong> has left Nobu at the One&Only Cape Town. \u00a0Chef Jonathan Gargan<\/strong>\u00a0has taken his position, previously with Bistro 1800 at the Cape Royale Luxury Hotel .<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Thomas Sinn has sold Sinn’s<\/strong> at Wembley Square, and only has Sinns on Long<\/strong>, a tiny restaurant. \u00a0 His former restaurant is now called My Sins<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 My\u00f6g Frozen Yoghurt<\/strong> has moved to the Lifestyle Centre on Kloof Street.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Voila<\/strong> (in Cape Quarter) is taking over the Salt Deli space in November.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Madeira Caf\u00e9<\/strong> has opened where Sofia’s was in Camps Bay.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 The V&A Market on the Wharf<\/strong> is said to be opening seven days a week from October onwards.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 LUST<\/strong> is the new name of Cotage Fromage at Vrede en Lust, with Chef and artisanal baker Jean-Pierre Smith having returned.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 MOYO<\/strong> has just filed for ‘voluntary business rescue proceedings’,<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/a> Business Day<\/strong> reports.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Good Food & Co<\/strong> opens in Franschhoek on 12 October, where the Franschhoek Food Emporium used to be.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Le Bon Vivant @ Glenwood Bistro<\/strong> has opened where Okamai used to be.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Vida e Caffe<\/strong> has taken over the bakery shop space in St John’s Piazza.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Fyndraai<\/strong> will be moving into a new restaurant building on Solms-Delta in January, making space for the current restaurant venue to become the tasting room.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Haas<\/strong> is moving to Buitenkant Street next year.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Frankie Fenner Meat Merchants<\/strong> has moved to 81 Church Street, sharing with Publik Wine Bar.<\/p>\n

Restaurant winter breaks<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Heaven<\/strong>\u00a0restaurant will be closed for renovations for two months, opening with new Chef\/co-owner Eric Bulpitt in mid-September, with new name The Restaurant.<\/p>\n

*\u00a0\u00a0 Shimmy Beach Club<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is closed until mid-September.<\/p>\n
