Both Delaire Graff Restaurant and Indochine, under the direction of Chef Christiaan Campbell, made it onto the Top 20 shortlist, which <strong>Eat Out<\/strong> announced yesterday.\u00a0 We are delighted with our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/cape-town\/eat-out-top-20-restaurant-awards-2014-shortlist-a-prediction\/#more-48604\"><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">best ever Top 20 Restaurant shortlist prediction score<\/span><\/b><\/a>, in correctly guessing 18 out of the Top 20 shortlisted restaurants.<\/p>\n<p>The <b>Eat Out<\/b> Top 20 Restaurant Awards shortlist contained a few surprises, leading one restaurant representative to comment that despite the new judging system and panel, little had changed in the shortlist, with only two newly opened restaurants included, being Camphors at Vergelegen (Chef PJ Vadas) and five hundred (Chef David Higgs).\u00a0 Surprises were the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The non-appearance of Terroir and Mosaic at The Orient, both restaurants having made the Top 10 Restaurant list last year.\u00a0 We have been critical of Terroir\u2019s perennial appearance on the<!--more--> Top 10 list, undeserved we felt as few changes were made to it since it opened. The exclusion of Mosaic is very surprising.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The inclusion of Bread &amp; Wine, once an <b>Eat Out<\/b> Top 10 Restaurant, especially as it only serves lunch.\u00a0 It feels as if the casual restaurant was a last minute inclusion, to plug a hole on the list. \u00a0Some question the presence of The Kitchen at Maison on the list too, saying that it is too casual to be on the Top 20 shortlist.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Surprising was that our prediction that The Pot Luck Club would not make the Top 20 shortlist was correct, Manley Communications sending an e-mail prior to the disclosure of the results yesterday morning to explain that \u2018<i>PLC (<\/i>The Pot Luck Club)<i>\u00a0 is indeed not a contestant in this year&#8217;s awards due to the move to the new address\u2019<\/i>. The e-mail also explained that Woolworths is no longer contracted with Chef Luke Dale-Roberts, the owner of both The Test Kitchen and The Pot Luck Club, which caused a conflict of interests, in that New Media Publishing also publishes <b>Taste<\/b> for Woolworths, and that <b>Eat Out<\/b> editor Abigail Donnelly also is the Food Editor of <b>Taste.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The exclusion of Bistrot Bizerca matched our prediction, joined by Bosman\u2019s, Nobu (chef change), Reuben\u2019s, Aubergine, Babel (chef change), Azure (chef change), and The Roundhouse (chef change), none of which made the Top 20 shortlist.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Prickly Pendock will be shattered to hear that Stellenbosch has once again reinforced its dominance as Gourmet Capital of South Africa:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Stellenbosch<\/span> has 7 restaurants: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/restaurant-news\/restaurant-review-tokaras-creative-cuisine-chemistry-is-sas-el-bulli-richard-carstens-our-ferran-adria\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Tokara<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/restaurant-news\/restaurant-review-jordan-restaurant-with-george-jardine-an-outstanding-mouthful\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Jordan\u2019s Restaurant<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/restaurant-news\/delaire-graff-restaurant-brings-its-greens-into-the-restaurant-this-winter\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Delaire Graff Restaurant,<\/strong><\/span><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/restaurant-news\/restaurant-review-indochine-at-delaire-graff-a-fine-high-note-after-flat-start\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Indochine<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wine-news\/restaurant-review-rust-vrede-almost-faultless\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Rust en Vrede<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/restaurant-news\/restaurant-review-overture-needs-no-introduction\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Overture<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, and<a href=\"http:\/\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/restaurant-news\/makeron-restaurant-the-model-eat-out-style-restaurant\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong> Makaron<\/strong><\/span><\/a> making the Top 20 shortlist.\u00a0 (Speaking to Chef Virgil Kahn of Indochine last night, he said he was overwhelmed with the news, and would not believe it until he saw it on the computer screen. He studied at The Hotel School, and previously worked at Maze and Nobu at The One&amp;Only Cape Town before joining Delaire Graff close to four years ago. He is a little known newcomer to the Top 20 chefs shortlist.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Franschhoek<\/span> has 4 nominations: The Tasting Room, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/franschhoek\/restaurant-review-pierneef-a-la-motte-is-a-work-of-art\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Pierneef a La Motte,<\/strong><\/span><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/franschhoek\/maison-the-kitchen-and-tasting-room-weylandts-home-of-good-living\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The Kitchen at Maison<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, and Bread &amp; Wine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The 4 shortlisted restaurants in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Cape Town<\/span> are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/cape-town\/restaurant-review-the-greenhouse-is-an-oasis-in-the-cellars-hohenhort-hotel\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The Greenhouse<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, La Colombe, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/cape-town\/restaurant-review-planet-restaurant-puts-mount-nelson-hotel-amongst-the-stars\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Planet Restaurant<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/cape-town\/restaurant-review-the-test-kitchen-by-luke-dale-roberts-is-down-to-earth-the-food-a-heavenly-feast\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The Test Kitchen<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Somerset West<\/span> is part of the Stellenbosch Wine Route, and the Wine Route has proudly added them to their tally, but for purposes of the <b>Eat Out<\/b> Awards they should be counted separately. Somerset West has its first two nominations ever: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/restaurant-news\/restaurant-review-camphors-at-vergelegen-surrounded-by-history-classic-state-of-the-art-restaurant\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Camphors at Vergelegen<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/restaurant-news\/waterkloof-wine-estate-and-restaurant-in-perfect-biodynamic-balance\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The Restaurant at Waterkloof!<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Johannesburg<\/span> has two nominations: five hundred and DW Eleven-13<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">KwaZulu-Natal<\/span> only has Hartford House on the Top 20 list.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The list of judges that assisted in evaluating the restaurant candidates is still a state secret. Given how small the restaurant industry is, the great interest in the restaurant awards, the power of Twitter in chefs identifying and greeting their guests, as well as feedback from restaurants themselves as to potential judges eating at their restaurants, some never having been seen there before, we have worked out that the following may be on the judging panel, all with problems in terms of conflicts of interest:<\/p>\n<p>* \u00a0\u00a0<strong>Andy Fenner<\/strong>\u00a0of Frankie Fenner Meat Merchants, who moved from blogging and magazine food writing for New Media Publishing\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Taste<\/strong>\u00a0magazine and\u00a0<strong>Crush!<\/strong>\u00a0when he admitted that he could not make enough money from food writing! \u00a0He supplies a number of Top 20 league restaurants, and does collaborative events with restaurants, such as Burrata. \u00a0He would be recognised by chefs, but they are not always in the restaurant, and he appears to have booked under his surname in some restaurants, and another surname in others.<\/p>\n<p>* \u00a0\u00a0<strong>Garth Stroebel<\/strong>\u00a0is a former\u00a0South African Chefs Academy co-owner, and appears to consult to restaurants, especially new ones, including Stables and Camphors at Vergelegen. \u00a0Most front of house restaurant staff would not know or recognise him, even though he appears to book under his own name!<\/p>\n<p>* \u00a0\u00a0<strong>Liam Tomlin<\/strong>\u00a0is an interesting choice, nor being well-known to front-of-house restaurant staff as the owner of Chef\u2019s Warehouse and Cookery School in Cape Town, with a short-lived stint at Leopard\u2019s Leap in Franschhoek as Liam Tomlin Food, in conjunction with La Motte\u2019s Hein and Hannelie Koegelenberg. \u00a0He is known to the Franschhoek restaurants however.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the Top 20 shortlist, <strong>Eat Out<\/strong> General Manager Aileen Lamb said:\u00a0 <i>\u2018We\u2019re confident in our new approach to the judging process and the subsequent audit of the results. In the interest of transparency, which has been our focus from the outset, we will make the scores available to all the nominees&#8217;. <\/i>Mrs Donnelly added:<i>\u00a0\u00a0 \u2018This year we have definitely seen a bit of a shake-up. There are some new additions to the list, as well as the consistently great restaurants that continually push boundaries through innovation\u2019. <\/i><\/p>\n<p>Restaurants are becoming more casual, Mrs Donnelly added: <i>\u2018High quality food is being served to diners who are encouraged to be comfortable and relaxed. \u00a0Ultimately, however, it\u2019s the food that counts.\u00a0 Taste is the emotional component of a dish, making it the most vital element. The scorecards show which restaurants excel in flavour and not just the fussy stuff.
