\"La<\/a>Despite one of \u00a0the worst winters ever experienced by the Cape hospitality industry, most restaurants appear to have survived it. A surprise trend is the number of Mediterranean style restaurants opening, with true Spanish and Italian owners and\/or staff. This list of restaurant openings and closings is\u00a0updated continuously,\u00a0<\/strong>as we receive new information:<\/p>\n

Restaurant Openings<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

* \u00a0 The\u00a0Harbour House<\/strong>\u00a0group has opened\u00a0La Parada<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0Spanish Tapas restaurant on\"\"\u00a0Bree Street, with a subterranean bar\/nightclub (above).<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Caf\u00e9\u00a0Puerto Cabo<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0has opened on Loop Street, a Spanish eatery and men’s clothing shop.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0House of Machines<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0has opened on Shortmarket Street, building motorcycles, offering good Evil Twin coffee, and serving very healthy food.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Orphanage Cocktail Emporium<\/strong>\u00a0is opening\u00a0Orphanage Club<\/strong>\u00a0upstairs, with 1920\u2019s style music by live performers, later this year.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Equus\u00a0restaurant<\/span><\/strong><\/a> on the Cavalli stud and wine farm on the R44 has opened.\u00a0Carl Habel<\/strong>\u00a0left the Mount Nelson Hotel as Restaurant Manager and Sommelier to join the restaurant, but left before it opened. Chef Henrico Grobbelaar<\/strong>\u00a0from the Twelve Apostles heads up the kitchen.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Shake your Honey\u00a0<\/strong>is to open in the original\u00a0Madame Zingara<\/strong>\u00a0building on Loop Street next year, according to an\u00a0iolTravel\u00a0<\/strong>report. \u00a0The \u2018vibrant spirit of India\u2019\u00a0<\/em>is to be reflected in the 5-storey building, with a theatre, markets, restaurants, and shops.<\/p>\n

\"\"* \u00a0 A new restaurant and micro brewery is to open next door to The Bromwell in Woodstock (name not yet known).<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Woodcutters Arms<\/strong>\u00a0has opened in Hout Bay.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Reuben\u2019s Abalone House\u00a0<\/strong>has opened in Paternoster!<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0The Creamery Caf\u00e9<\/strong>\u00a0has opened in Newlands Quarter in Dean Street.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Italian Kitchen<\/strong>\u00a0has opened in the Newlands Quarter.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Mumbai Caf\u00e9<\/strong>\u00a0has opened below Jewel of India on the corner of Wale and Rose Streets.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Diesel & Creme<\/strong>, a diner, restaurant, and coffee shop, is opening on the R62 in Barrydale.<\/p>\n

*\u00a0\u00a0 5 on Lourenford<\/strong>\u00a0has opened in Somerset West<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Chef Pieter Vlok has opened\u00a0Mont Marie Restaurant<\/strong>\u00a0on the Klein DasBosch wine estate of Shoprite retailer Whitey Basson, on the Blaauwklippen Road in Stellenbosch.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Idiom Wines<\/strong>\u00a0is said to be opening a restaurant in January.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0The Tap Room<\/strong>\u00a0has opened at Devils’ Peak Brewery<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Engruna Eatery<\/strong>\u00a0is opening in the same block as La Boheme in Sea Point, a\u00a0‘sister restaurant to @La Boheme_cpt. Gourmet Pizzas, Burgers, Craft Beer, Milkshakes. Opening soon<\/em>‘, \u00a0its Twitter Bio informs.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 I\u00a0\u2665\u00a0my Laundry<\/strong>\u00a0has opened another branch on Bree Street.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Jordan Wines is launching a\u00a0Deli and Bakery.<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Pistachio Bistro<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0has opened in Franschhoek, in the decor shop with the same name.<\/p>\n

*\u00a0\u00a0 Publik<\/strong>\u00a0has opened on 81 Church Street, between Bree and Buitengracht Streets, as a wine bar operated by David Cope on weekday evenings, and as a\u00a0daytime space for\u00a0Frankie Fenner Meat Merchants.<\/strong><\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Cr\u00e8me Glace\u00e9 Cold Gold\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0is opening in Huguenot Square in Franschhoek on 1 November.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Lucky.Fish & Chips<\/strong>\u00a0has opened on Bree Street, belonging to Michael Townsend of the Harbour House group.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 The Butcher Shop & Grill<\/strong> is opening next to Sotano in Mouille Point.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Hallelujah<\/strong> has opened near Power & Glory on Kloofnek Road.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Plant<\/strong> opens as a fully vegan restaurant on Buitengracht Street in February.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Overgaauw Restaurant<\/strong> has opened, with owners Russel Wasserfall and Camilla Comins, previously of The Table at De Meye.<\/p>\n

Restaurant Closures<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0It’s a House<\/strong>\u00a0in De Waterkant has closed.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Constantia Uitsig<\/strong>\u00a0is closing down on 30 November. \u00a0La Colombe and River Caf\u00e9 appear to remain remain open.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Deli @ The Square<\/strong>\u00a0in Paarl has closed down at Frater Square.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Leaf Restaurant<\/strong>\u00a0has closed down, where Showroom and Portofino used to operate.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Salt Deli<\/strong> in Bantry Bay has closed down.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Club ZAR<\/strong> has closed down at the Cape Royale Luxury Hotel.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Piccolo Restaurant<\/strong> has closed down in the Gardens Centre.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Awestruck<\/strong> on Bree Street (ex Caveau) has closed down.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Simply Wholesome<\/strong> has closed down at the Woodstock Exchange and City Bowl Market.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Funiki<\/strong> run by Deon Sensei has closed down at L’ermitage in Franschhoek.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 New York Bagels<\/strong> in Sea Point is said to be closing down next week.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Caf\u00e9 Chic<\/strong> in Gardens is closing down on 10 February.<\/p>\n

Restaurant staff\/venue changes<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

* \u00a0Caf\u00e9 Le Chocolatier<\/strong>\u00a0has closed down inside\u00a0<\/strong>Apprentice<\/strong>, and has opened on Church Street in Stellenbosch.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0El Burro<\/strong>\u00a0has opened\u00a0Cabrito Bar<\/strong>, in a section of the downstairs ex-Rhapsody space.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Wakame<\/strong>\u00a0sister restaurant from Johannesburg,\u00a0KOI Restaurant<\/a>,<\/strong>\u00a0has opened at the Ambassador Hotel, where Salt was.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Luke and Jessie Grant (ex-Nook in Stellenbosch) have taken over\u00a0The Table at De Meye. \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>The former Nook is now called\u00a0Meraki.<\/strong><\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Peter Veldsman\u2019s\u00a0Emily\u2019s<\/span><\/a>,<\/strong>\u00a0previously in Woodstock and the V&A Waterfront, has opened at 55 Kloof Street.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Chef\u00a0Christo Pretorius<\/strong> is the new Executive Chef of the Twelve Apostles Hotel<\/span><\/a>, \u00a0<\/strong>and its \u00a0restaurant Azure. \u00a0<\/strong>Chef Chris Mare<\/strong>\u00a0of Blaauwklippen has moved to the Twelve Apostles Hotel as Executive Sous Chef. \u00a0Chef Stefan Muller<\/strong>\u00a0has taken over as Executive Chef at Blaauwklippen.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Chef Eric Bulpitt<\/strong>\u00a0has opened\u00a0The Restaurant at Newton Johnson, <\/strong>with\u00a0Chef\u00a0George Jardine\u00a0of Jordan’s as his business partner.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Morgenster<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is planning a new restaurant with an (very big name) international partner, a Caf\u00e9, a Deli, and accommodation, a project which is still in development phase, but is planned to roll out over the next 13 months. \u00a0Sofia\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0closed down on the wine and olive estate earlier this year.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Mon Plaisir restaurant has closed down at\u00a0Chamonix<\/strong>\u00a0wine estate in Franschhoek. Reuben Riffel is the new operator of\u00a0Racine.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Chef Nico Pretorius is in the kitchen, previously from Reuben’s at One&Only Cape Town.<\/strong><\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Joanne and Peter Kunz have bought\u00a0The Original Deli<\/strong>\u00a0in Hermanus. \u00a0It has been renamed\u00a0Original Deli & Wine Lab<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Mynt Caf\u00e9\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0has opened where Bar1 used to be in Camps Bay.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Chef Lapo Magni<\/strong>\u00a0has left\u00a0The Odyssey<\/strong><\/a>, and has opened his The Drunken Tuscan stand at the Neighbourgoods Market at the Old Biscuit Mill.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Le Coq has closed in Franschhoek, and Allora<\/strong>\u00a0has moved into the space. \u00a0There will be a hotel at the back of the building.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Executive Chef \u00a0Scott Shepherd<\/strong>\u00a0has taken over the kitchen at Le Franschhoek hotel.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Chef Neil Norman left Dornier Bodega restaurant, and moved back to\u00a0Kove <\/strong>and Paranga<\/strong>\u00a0in Camps Bay, having left there after a very short stint (see note below). \u00a0Chef Daniel George Kotz\u00e9 has taken over as Executive Chef at\u00a0Bodega.<\/strong><\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0All\u00e9e Bleue<\/strong>\u00a0has leased out its Bistro to Chef Atilla Allmann.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Tashas<\/strong>\u00a0has opened in the V&A Waterfront where Mugg & Bean was.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Chef\u00a0Frederic Faucheux<\/strong>\u00a0has left Nobu at the One&Only Cape Town. \u00a0Chef\u00a0Jonathan Gargan<\/strong>\u00a0has taken his position, previously with Bistro 1800 at the Cape Royale Luxury Hotel .<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Thomas Sinn has sold\u00a0Sinn’s<\/strong>\u00a0at Wembley Square, and only has\u00a0Sinns on Long<\/strong>, a tiny restaurant. \u00a0 His former restaurant is now called\u00a0My Sins<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0My\u00f6g Frozen Yoghurt<\/strong>\u00a0has moved to the Lifestyle Centre on Kloof Street.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Voila<\/strong>\u00a0(in Cape Quarter) has opened in the former Salt Deli space.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Madeira Caf\u00e9<\/strong>\u00a0has opened where Sofia’s was in Camps Bay.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 The\u00a0V&A Market on the Wharf<\/strong>\u00a0is said to be opening seven days a week.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0LUST<\/strong>\u00a0is the new name of Cotage Fromage at Vrede en Lust, with Chef and artisanal baker Jean-Pierre Smith having returned.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0MOYO<\/strong>\u00a0has just filed for\u00a0‘voluntary business rescue proceedings’,<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0Business Day<\/strong>\u00a0reports.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Good Food & Co<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0has opened in Franschhoek, where the Franschhoek Food Emporium used to be.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Casparus<\/strong>\u00a0in Stellenbosch is changing, dropping its name, with Sgt Pepper moving in and Chef Etienne Bonthuys cooking for them.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0Mondiall<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0has opened in the former Green Dolphin in the V&A Waterfront, with Chef Oliver Cattermole as Head Chef, and co-owned by Chef Peter Tempelhoff and Patrick Symington.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 True Italic<\/strong> has opened where Frieda’s used to be.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Chef’s Warehouse & Cookery School<\/strong> is moving to 90 Bree Street, in the Cape Heritage hotel building, where Awestruck\/Caveau used to be.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Adrian Cook, formerly of Bon Amis at Bloemendal wine estate, has been appointed as Executive Chef, and Johann Breedt, previously of Westin Cape Town Executive Club, as Head Chef, both at Shimmy Beach Club.<\/strong><\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Chef Richie Tewnion has joined Kloof Street House<\/strong><\/span><\/a> as Executive Chef, having previously been at Woodcutters Arms in Hout Bay. \u00a0He has worked for Jamie Oliver in London, at his Fifteen training restaurant.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Judi Tewnion has taken over as Head Chef at Zenzero<\/strong>, Chef Neil Norman having left the restaurant again.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 The Table Bay Hotel is opening Camissa Restaurant<\/strong> in December, replacing the Conservatory Restaurant and Terrace and Palm Court.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Bootlegger Coffee Company<\/strong> has opened where Caturra Coffee used to be on Regent Road in Sea Point.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 The Spur Corporation has bought the six Hussar Grill<\/strong> restaurants, and will expand the restaurant chain.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Chef Maryna Frederiksen<\/strong> has left the Franschhoek Kitchen at Holden Manz, and moved to Sacred Ground.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Ristorante Posticino<\/strong> has opened a branch in Hout Bay, where Wild Woods used to be.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 After spending short periods of time at Glenwood and then at L’ermitage in Franschhoek, Chef Deon Sensei<\/strong> moved to the new Umi Japanese restaurant in Camps Bay at the beginning of December. \u00a0He has just left, to open his Funiki – Sensei’s Japanese Private Dining Experience.<\/p>\n
