\/><\/a>It should have been a surprise that the <b>Sunday Times<\/b> last weekend contained 10 full page and 16 smaller advertisements in honour of the late Nelson Mandela, given his passing on Thursday evening, and the deadlines of newspapers to ensure their distribution in the early hours of Sunday morning.\u00a0 It was interesting to evaluate corporate South Africa\u2019s response, in their advertisements, to the passing of our country\u2019s greatest leader, most quoting the wisdom of Madiba in their tributes to him.<\/p>\n<p>Given the two days in which ad agencies had to book their clients\u2019 advertisements, it is clear that they could not have created them in such a short time period, given lead times to conceptualise the ad, obtain client approval, and to produce the material.\u00a0 It is clear that the major corporates had their farewell ads to Madiba prepared and mothballed for the announcement of his passing.<\/p>\n<p>The most touching and most genuine advertisement, in our opinion, is the one by Nando\u2019s, demonstrating the power of consistency in advertisement layout and typeface, recognisable to any South African without its logo or branding.\u00a0 The most disgusting of all <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Mandela-AVBOB-Whale-Cotatge-Portfolio.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-52139\" alt=\"Mandela AVBOB Whale Cotatge Portfolio\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Mandela-AVBOB-Whale-Cotatge-Portfolio-225x300.jpg?resize=225%2C300\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Mandela-AVBOB-Whale-Cotatge-Portfolio.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Mandela-AVBOB-Whale-Cotatge-Portfolio.jpg?w=1875&amp;ssl=1 1875w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>the ads is that by funeral organisers AVBOB, depicting Madiba in daisies, and shouting its pay-off line \u2018<i>We\u2019re here for you\u2019<\/i>!<\/p>\n<p>Pick \u2018n Pay\u2019s advertising disappointed, with three full page advertisements in last Sunday\u2019s edition, the one on page 12 in the main body being a crass \u2018<i>Price Cuts\u2019<\/i> one, amidst the remaining ads all being tributes to Madiba.\u00a0 Pick \u2018n Pay and the media department of its ad agency could have done a better job in planning the placements, requesting its tribute ad in this slot, and its special offer ad in other sections of the paper.\u00a0 Cynically one could think that the retailer purposely capitalised on the above <!--more-->average readership of the paper last weekend!\u00a0 Only on page 29 of section 3 of the <strong>Sunday Times<\/strong> does the company pay tribute to Madiba, with a photograph of the Nelson Mandela Bridge in Johannesburg with the headline \u2018<i>Rest in the peace you gave us.<\/i>\u2019\u00a0 On the following page it has a \u2018<i>Be an Angel\u2019<\/i> ad, requesting that one help \u2018<i>feed someone this Christmas\u2019<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Other full page advertisements were those by<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nedbank <i>(\u2018A Tribute to Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, The Children\u2019s Champion\u2019<\/i>) and linked to it being a \u2018<i>proud partner\u2019<\/i> of the Nelson Mandela Children\u2019s Fund<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Mandela-SA-Breweries-Whale-Cottage-Portfolio.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-52138\" alt=\"Mandela SA Breweries Whale Cottage Portfolio\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Mandela-SA-Breweries-Whale-Cottage-Portfolio-300x225.jpg?resize=300%2C225\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Mandela-SA-Breweries-Whale-Cottage-Portfolio.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Mandela-SA-Breweries-Whale-Cottage-Portfolio.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Mandela-SA-Breweries-Whale-Cottage-Portfolio.jpg?w=1250&amp;ssl=1 1250w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Mandela-SA-Breweries-Whale-Cottage-Portfolio.jpg?w=1875&amp;ssl=1 1875w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>South African Breweries, the only double page spread, (\u2018<em>Forever a legend, forever in our hearts<\/em>\u2019) but with a most boring execution to illustrate Madiba\u2019s personal life, education, political career, and incarceration.<\/li>\n<li>Embarrassingly for the two businesses, ABSA\/Barclays and MTN used the same words in their ads (\u2018<i>Lala ngoxolo Tata\u2019<\/i>).\u00a0 This was followed in the ABSA ad by \u2018<i>You\u2019ve left behind a nation inspired by hope. Rest peacefully. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela\u2019<\/i>. \u00a0\u00a0With a burning candle, it seemed less corporate and more human.\u00a0 The wording in the MTN ad was preceded by \u2018<i>The sun shall never set on so glorious a human achievement\u2019<\/i>.<\/li>\n<li>Standard Bank, a boring ad in blue type, with no photograph of Madiba, but with prominent bank branding, hardly appropriate.<\/li>\n<li>The most unusual ad was a brown sepia look one by Edcon, with low key Edgars, CNA and Jet branding, being a \u2018<i>Tribute to a man who changed lives. Millions of them\u2019<\/i>.\u00a0 It highlights the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Mr Mandela in 1993, and his election in 1994.<\/li>\n<li>Anglo American\u2019s indulgent full page ad simply said: <i>\u2018A Moment of Silence\u2019.<\/i><\/li>\n<li>LONMIN used a text only full page advertisement: \u2018<i>Thank you for changing the world Madiba. We\u2019ll continue to be the catalyst for change\u2019<\/i><\/li>\n<li>KFC crowed \u201c<i>Hamba Kahle Tata. You\u2019ve made us all one family\u2019<\/i><\/li>\n<li>General Electric (GE)\u2019s ad said \u2018<i>A Beacon of Hope, a true gentle giant. Hamba Kahle Tata\u2019<\/i><\/li>\n<li>Samsung\u2019s ad quoted Madiba: \u2019<i>For to be free is not merely to cast off one\u2019s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others\u2019<\/i>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Those with a lesser budget, affording only half page ads, were Coca Cola (\u2018<i>The purpose of freedom is to create it for others<\/i>\u2019); Browns diamond store, with an excellent placement on page 3 (\u2018<i>Finally, one man closed his eyes so that the rest of us could open ours<\/i>\u2019; Vodacom in cheap black and white rather than its corporate red (\u2018<i>Vodacom joins the nation as we grieve the sad passing of our beloved Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. Madiba, Tata, Father, Peacemaker. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this time\u2019); <\/i>Cell C (\u2018<i>When a man has done what he considers to be his duty to his people and his country, he can rest in peace\u2019<\/i>);\u00a0 SASOL (\u2018<i>Siyabonga Tata Madiba. Hamba Kahle\u2019<\/i>); \u00a0a boring \u2018<i>Chevron salutes Madiba\u2019<\/i>.; \u00a0SAA (\u2018<i>May you rest in the peace you gave us\u2019<\/i>); \u00a0The Foschini Group (abbreviated as TFG), listing all 18 companies in the group, has its CEO Doug Murray say \u2018<i>Thank you, Nelson Mandela\u2019<\/i>;\u00a0 the most striking advertisement in its simplicity and lack of branding is that by British American Tobacco South Africa, given that cigarette companies are not allowed to advertise \u2013 the ad contains a photograph of the \u2018<i>Legacy Canvas\u2019<\/i> with handprints in different colours, which hangs in its head office; half the Toyota ad is unreadable, only one line and the company name being legible in red: <i>\u201995 years of Courage, Integrity, and Compassion. May your legacy and inspiration live forever. Condolences to Madiba\u2019s family, friends, and the South African nation\u2019<\/i>; \u00a0PUTCO \u2018s Chairman Dr Anna Mokgokong said \u2018<i>Thank you Madiba\u2019<\/i>;\u00a0 the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University wrote: \u2018<i>Lala ngoxolo, Tata. We are so proud to carry your name. Vaarwel\u2019; \u00a0<\/i>distasteful is the heavily branded Italtile and CTM \u2018<i>Our Tribute to Former President Nelson Mandela\u2019<\/i> advertisement; \u00a0the Independent Electorate Commission (IEC) said \u2018<i>Hamba Kakuhle, Tata.
