Two years later they made the first wines.<\/p>\n<p>It was the wedding of a niece three years ago that brought me to spend a <!--more-->weekend in Tulbagh. \u00a0We had bad luck with our accommodation at Rijk&#8217;s and Manley&#8217;s, and the restaurants in the village. \u00a0A highlight however was the visit to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wine-news\/tulbagh-wine-route-needs-marketing-must-extend-its-tasting-times\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Saronsberg tasting room and its impressive art galler<\/strong><\/span><strong>y<\/strong><\/a> in the tasting building and outside it, although the tasting room staff did not volunteer any\u00a0information about their wines.<\/p>\n<p>We met at the pool area of the hotel, and Nick was the perfect host in finding a glass of their MCC Brut 2009. \u00a0He told me that there are seven family members with the same name and surname, all of <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Saronsberg-Salmon-Eggs-Benedict-Canape-Whale-Cottage-Portfolio.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-54261\" alt=\"Saronsberg Salmon Eggs Benedict Canape Whale Cottage Portfolio\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Saronsberg-Salmon-Eggs-Benedict-Canape-Whale-Cottage-Portfolio-150x150.jpg?resize=150%2C150\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Saronsberg-Salmon-Eggs-Benedict-Canape-Whale-Cottage-Portfolio.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Saronsberg-Salmon-Eggs-Benedict-Canape-Whale-Cottage-Portfolio.jpg?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Saronsberg-Salmon-Eggs-Benedict-Canape-Whale-Cottage-Portfolio.jpg?resize=1024%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Saronsberg-Salmon-Eggs-Benedict-Canape-Whale-Cottage-Portfolio.jpg?w=1250&amp;ssl=1 1250w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Saronsberg-Salmon-Eggs-Benedict-Canape-Whale-Cottage-Portfolio.jpg?w=1875&amp;ssl=1 1875w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>whom are related, which causes some confusion. \u00a0 The Cape Grace served Salmon Eggs Benedict canap\u00e9s at the pool side.\u00a0Dewaldt Heyns is the winemaker, and he eloquently talked us through the ten wines we tasted. \u00a0When he first arrived in Tulbagh, he spoke to Rijk&#8217;s about the wine cultivars that do well in Tulbagh, and he was advised to plant Shiraz and Pinotage. \u00a0He said that the past ten years have been amazing, and they &#8216;<em>hit the ground running&#8217;. <\/em>\u00a0They have become particularly known for their Shiraz, which &#8216;<em>performs phenomenally<\/em>&#8216;, attributing their success to attention to detail. R70<\/p>\n<p>* \u00a0 Saronsberg Viognier 2012: \u00a0this cultivar is usually picked too ripe, Dewaldt said, and has too much oak. \u00a0Being a difficult wine to make, Dewaldt went to France to learn. \u00a0They pick their grapes earlier, and have made an elegant wine with a delicate perfume, and is the most versatile food wine. \u00a0It is kept in oak barrels for 14 months. R90<\/p>\n<p>* \u00a0 Saronsberg Grenache 2011: \u00a0Dewaldt said that their Grenache is a departure from the typical South African style, being &#8216;<em style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">a little more aggressive, with purity of fruit, being delicately berry-flavoured, more like a Pinot N<\/em><em>oir than a Shiraz<\/em>&#8216;. \u00a0He said it is one of the best wines he has ever made. \u00a0They only sell it from the farm, and only make 3000 &#8211; 4000 bottles, and only make it if the grape quality is excellent. Cost is R120.<\/p>\n<p>* \u00a0 Saronsberg Shiraz 2011: \u00a0 This is their most well-known wine, and is their most consistently performing, according to Dewaldt. \u00a0Its elegance has grown over time. \u00a090% of the wine is matured in new French oak. \u00a0The diverse soils on the farm give a diversity of flavour profiles to the wine. \u00a0It was awarded 5 stars by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/cape-town\/diners-club-platters-guide-sets-new-records-mullineux-leeu-new-winery-of-the-year-2014\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Platter&#8217;s South African Wines 2014<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0and many other awards. R185<\/p>\n<p>* \u00a0 Saronsberg Seismic 2008: \u00a0 The Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (77%), Merlot (10%), Petit Verdot (7%), and Malbec (6%) has softer tannins, but is a more powerful and concentrated wine. R190<\/p>\n<p>* \u00a0 Saronsberg Full Circle 2011: \u00a0 This Rh\u00f4ne-style blend of Shiraz (80%), Grenache (13%), Mourvedre (5%), and Viognier (2%) has dark fruit, and red berry and cherry flavours. \u00a0R230<\/p>\n<p>* \u00a0 Saronsberg Provenance Shiraz: \u00a0This is not just a second label wine, Dewaldt said, but is a stand-alone wine with a different identity and flavour profile. It is in oak for about 20 months. \u00a0There may be a small amount of Viognier and other components in the wine. \u00a0 R95<\/p>\n<p>* \u00a0 Saronsberg Provenance Rooi: \u00a0This Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (40%), Merlot (32%), Petit Verdot (11%), Malbec (10%), and Cabernet Franc (7%) is best value for money. R 105<\/p>\n<p>* \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Saronsberg Provenance Shiraz Ros\u00e9 2013: \u00a0a light easy drinking wine, made from Shiraz grapes, which was praised at our tasting table. \u00a0R45<\/p>\n<p>* \u00a0 Saronsberg Six Point Three Sauvignon Blanc Straw Wine 2006: \u00a0This is matured in new oak for 2 &#8211; 3 years. \u00a0R150.<\/p>\n<p>In general Dewaldt&#8217;s mantra is &#8216;<em>average is not good enough<\/em>&#8216;, but acknowledged that luck plays a big role in the making of wines. \u00a0Looking back over the past ten yeas, he asked what is next for Saronsberg wines, &#8216;<em>as one cannot stay static&#8217;<\/em>. \u00a0 Dewaldt did express a very important goal, and that is to be a Top 10 wine estate in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>At our tasting table Saronsberg was praised for making very good Bordeaux as well as Rh\u00f4ne-style blends, clearly unusual to have been mentioned. \u00a0He shared that they had just started harvesting, three weeks later than usual, due to the very wet winter. \u00a0At lunch we chatted about Viogniers, once 89 labels being available, but now vastly reduced, with those by Flagstone, Creation, and Saronsberg being highly rated.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Saronsberg-Ivan-Oertle-Woolworths-Whale-Cottage-Portfolio.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-54402\" alt=\"Saronsberg Ivan Oertle Woolworths Whale Cottage Portfolio\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Saronsberg-Ivan-Oertle-Woolworths-Whale-Cottage-Portfolio-150x150.jpg?resize=150%2C150\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Saronsberg-Ivan-Oertle-Woolworths-Whale-Cottage-Portfolio.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Saronsberg-Ivan-Oertle-Woolworths-Whale-Cottage-Portfolio.jpg?zoom=2&amp;resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Saronsberg-Ivan-Oertle-Woolworths-Whale-Cottage-Portfolio.jpg?zoom=3&amp;resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>At our tasting table I met Ivan Oertle for the first time, with Swiss roots and the Wine Buyer at Woolworths. \u00a0He has worked at the company for 28 years, having been a Food Buyer in the past. \u00a0He has been their wine specialist for the past 15 years, doing wine courses as well as buying courses, and is busy with his Master of Wine. \u00a0He told me that 15 &#8211; 20% of the Woolworths wine range is existing brands, the balance being Woolworths own label wine brands, the latter giving them a better margin. \u00a0It also ties in with making the &#8216;<em>Woolworths difference&#8217;<\/em>, not being &#8216;<em>me too&#8217;<\/em>. \u00a0Almost two thirds of the Woolworths wines are bought by female purchasers, who <em>&#8216;buy with their eye and on emotion&#8217;<\/em>, Ivan said. Label design therefore is crucial in creating the sale. \u00a0They have conducted research on what makes women buy wines, and the key aspects are that the label be attractive and that it does not have any quirky or clever aspects to it, &#8216;<em>as you will lose them&#8217;<\/em>. \u00a0The wine shopper has 40 &#8211; 60 seconds to comprehend 400 brands in their wine section, and to make their choice. \u00a0He shared that their wines are not necessarily cheaper, Woolworths being the largest seller in the country of Veuve Clicquot at R450 a bottle. \u00a0Recently they sold out of Graham Beck Pheasants Run Sauvignon Blanc in just two months, despite the cost of R190 a bottle.<\/p>\n<p>At lunch we were well looked after by the Cape Grace Restaurant Manager Martin Drotsky, who made sure that we had more than enough wine options to pair with our three courses. \u00a0The starter <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Saronsberg-Starter-Whale-Cottage-Portfolio.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-54378\" alt=\"Saronsberg Starter Whale Cottage Portfolio\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Saronsberg-Starter-Whale-Cottage-Portfolio-300x225.jpg?resize=300%2C225\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>was a marriage of what was originally planned, being smoked salmon trout served with a grilled prawn, lime mousse, pickled ginger, and what was meant to be a crispy kataifi ( a Middle Eastern pastry) but which was not to be found on our plates, with a vegetarian alternative of red and golden baby beets and a tomato salad, served on a slate plate. \u00a0This course was paired with Saronsberg Sauvignon Blanc 2013, Saronsberg Viognier 2012, and Saronsberg Provenance Shiraz Ros\u00e9 2013, the Ros\u00e9 pairing particularly well with the tomato part of the dish.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Saronsberg-Sirloin-Whale-Cottage-Portfolio.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"
