* \u00a0 Johannesburg teenager Filipa da Silva has won a competition launched by American Idols presenter Ryan Seacrest, for the best rendition of One Direction’s ‘<\/strong><\/span><\/a>Story of my Life’,<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/em>beating former Eurovision Irish twin contestants Jedward.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 The Tourism Indaba, held in May for the past 24 years, could be threatened by three trade and travel shows held in Cape Town under the Africa Travel Week umbrella<\/strong> <\/span><\/a>the week prior to what is the country’s largest tourism and travel show, organised by SA Tourism and held in Durban.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Johannesburg was the most popular tourism destination in Africa<\/strong><\/span><\/a> in 2012, according to the MasterCard Third Annual Global Destination Cities Index, and should be the continent’s most visited city too, with an estimated 2,5 million visitors spending R35 billion.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0\u00a0The inaugural AfrAsia Bank Cape Wine Auction 2014 will be held over lunch at Delaire Graff on 15 March. \u00a0It will be preceded by a Barrel Tasting and Auction Preview at Waterford Estate the evening before, and the funds will go to funding education in the Winelands, benefitting\u00a0Pebbles Project, the MAD Charity, and the Click Foundation. \u00a0The\u00a0Cape Wine Auction Trust has been created, and its founding Trustees are Michael Jordaan, Ken Kinsey-Quick, Wendy Appelbaum, and MikeRatcliffe. \u00a0Online bids will be accepted. * \u00a0 The proposed Wescape development along the West Coast<\/strong><\/span><\/a> has been severely criticised, for moving ‘slums’<\/em> out into the development, given the high density population concentration, and that many parts of the existing Cape Town can be better utilised to accommodate its residents. \u00a0A further concern is evacuating 800000 residents should there be a melt-down at Koeberg close by.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Warwick Wine Estate is honouring mothers this Mother’s Day (11 May), paying special tribute to Norma Ratcliffe, who was the wine estate’s first winemaker, and the first female member of the Cape Winemakers Guild. \u00a0She has been recognised in Warwick’s ‘First Lady’<\/em> range of a Cabernet Sauvignon and Unoaked Chardonnay. \u00a0The promotion will seek nominations for ‘South Africa’s favourite mom<\/em>‘. \u00a0The Warwick First lady wine range, White Lady, and Three Cape Ladies will also be presented as the ‘Official Wine of Mother’s Day<\/em>‘ at retails outlets and a number of restaurants.
