{"id":54957,"date":"2014-03-09T11:11:11","date_gmt":"2014-03-09T09:11:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/?p=54957"},"modified":"2014-03-11T17:13:19","modified_gmt":"2014-03-11T15:13:19","slug":"should-sa-tourism-not-check-what-is-written-about-cape-town-before-it-is-published","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/cape-town\/should-sa-tourism-not-check-what-is-written-about-cape-town-before-it-is-published\/","title":{"rendered":"Should SA Tourism not check what is written about Cape Town before it is published?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Yours-Truly-Dan-20140306150809239202-620x349.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-54958\" alt=\"Yours Truly Dan-20140306150809239202-620x349\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Yours-Truly-Dan-20140306150809239202-620x349-300x168.jpg?resize=300%2C168\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Yours-Truly-Dan-20140306150809239202-620x349.jpg?resize=300%2C168&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Yours-Truly-Dan-20140306150809239202-620x349.jpg?resize=620%2C349&amp;ssl=1 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>Yesterday the respected\u00a0<strong>Sydney Morning Herald<\/strong> published a super article about<a href=\"http:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/travel\/cape-crusaders-20140305-346ka.html\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong> Cape Town \u00a0and its food and beverage entrepreneurs<\/strong><\/span><\/a> in the main (&#8216;<em>Cape Crusaders<\/em>&#8216;), the visit by its writer Rachel Olding having been sponsored by SA Tourism. \u00a0Containing two errors, one significant in its incorrect name for Table Mountain, it raises the question as to whether SA Tourism should insist on seeing copy first before it is published, not a popular nor common offer made by writers!<\/p>\n<p>The writer&#8217;s focus was on the entrepreneurs in Cape Town, &#8216;<em>bringing fresh new energy to Cape Town<\/em>&#8216;. \u00a0She adds: <em>&#8216;In Cape Town, like so many international cities, they&#8217;re increasingly clad in plaid shirts, plugged into the hottest global trends and leading a hipster revival mixing the best of different eras and cultures with their own Capetonian touch&#8217;.<\/em> \u00a0She quotes a tour guide that Cape Town has baboons to remind one that Cape Town is in Africa, feeling more European in its nature!<\/p>\n<p>Yours Truly on Kloof Street and on Long Street (owned by Daniel Holland); the Grand Daddy Hotel; Royale Eatery (described as &#8216;<em>hip new<\/em>&#8216; which it is not!); Deluxe Coffeeworks (owned by Carl Wessel and Judd Francis) on Church Street and in Gardens; the Old Biscuit Mill; A Store is Good on Kloof Street (owned by Dario Lette); \u00a0Supremebeing and Wardrobe on Kloof Street; Frankie Fenner <!--more-->Meat Merchants &#8216;<em>trend setting butchery.<\/em>&#8216; which she places off Kloof Street but it moved about three months ago, and refers to Andy Fenner as &#8216;<em>a former food critic&#8217;<\/em> which will not go down well with him!; Brewers &amp;Union; I Love my Laundry, with Clayton Howard mentioned as the owner, but she does not even mention its second outlet on Bree Street; \u00a0and Loading Bay are all mentioned as examples of entrepreneur-run outlets in Cape Town.<\/p>\n<p>Glaring in its omission of course is any reference to World Design Capital 2014 generally, and specifically to other entrepreneur run food and beverage businesses such as Truth, Gourmetboerie, the Harbour House\/LuckyFish\/La Parada entrepreneur emporium, \u00a0Chef Luke Dale-Robert&#8217;s The Test Kitchen and The Pot Luck Club, and the Vida e Caff\u00e8 emporium.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Where Olding really gets it wrong (not even corrected 24 hours later) is her reference to the scenic highlights of Cape Town: &#8216;<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"><em>Young entrepreneurs are bringing new energy and home-grown creativity to pockets of the city, making for a fun expedition to seek out hidden micro-breweries and vintage stores among the tourist spots of Cradle Mountain<\/em> (sic) ,<em> Robben Island and the waterfront precinct&#8217;. \u00a0<\/em> It is of course Table Mountain she was trying to refer to, high on awareness with it having been named one of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/cape-town\/table-mountain-new7wonders-of-nature-inaugurated-in-cape-town\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>New7Wonders of Nature<\/strong><\/span><\/a> in 2012, and the icon for Cape Town<em>. \u00a0<\/em>Cradle Mountain is in Tasmania!
