* \u00a0 SA Tourism may be feeling threatened by the World Travel Market Africa expo taking place in Cape Town a week before Indaba in May. \u00a0To date Indaba has been the dominant tourism expo in South Africa and on the African continent. Tourism Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk issued a statement, in support of Indaba<\/strong><\/span><\/a> (logical as it is organised by SA Tourism)! \u00a0In it he reflects that (the very negative) feedback about Indaba 2013 was heard and taken into account in planning Indaba 2014, scheduled for 10 – 12 May. Key is the increasing attendance of African countries at Indaba, 22 to date, with a total of 1242 buyers having booked to attend to date. \u00a0The Minister announced that a new bidding process will commence after Indaba 2014.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Bistrot Bizerca appears to be in liquidation<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. \u00a0 The restaurant has been a Top 10 and Best Bistro restaurant in the past, but appears to have lost energy when it moved into Heritage Square<\/strong><\/span><\/a> over a year ago. \u00a0(Note<\/strong>: See Comments for response on behalf of Bizerca, not explaining its liquidation in 2012, when it moved to the new premises)<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 South Africa’s tourism growth is estimated to be 3,6%<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, below the global growth rate of 4,3%, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council, measuring the impact of tourism in 184 countries. Tourism contributes R323 billion to our country’s economy, representing close to 10% of the GDP and 1,4 million jobs.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Kleine Zalze has received ethical accreditation from Fairtrade for its work in assisting its ‘previously disadvantaged workers’,<\/em> as well as protecting the environment, the result of a two year process. \u00a0The Stellenbosch wine estate is to launch a Fairtrade range of wines, the proceeds of which will benefit its workers. * \u00a0 Orphanage Cocktail Emporium barkeep Assaf Yechiel has won the South African leg of the Bacardi Legacy Competition, held in Sandton last week. \u00a0His<\/span>\u00a0‘Dream Catcher’ cocktail \u00a0is made of Bacardi Superior Rum, Pomegranate Juice, Dill Syrup, and Fermet Branca, which Assaf explained as follows: ‘<\/span>it is about inspiring people to follow through with their – I would love to do that – moments. To live a little more, worry a little less and embrace life\u2019s bizarre and wonderful gifts. Quite simply, it\u2019s about being a Dream Catcher’<\/i>. \u00a0Assaf will represent South Africa at the Global Finals in Moscow in May. \u00a0Past accolades that Assaf has won include\u00a0<\/span>Bombay Sapphire\u2019s Most Imaginative Barman 2013, and The Olmeca Tahona Society 2012.
