Winners to be selected by a panel, usually chaired by John Maytham. \u00a0Last year the prize was <!--more-->not awarded, a very controversial decision which received heavy criticism.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 170 speakers\/writers and panel chairpersons is involved in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flf.co.za\/programme\/1\/\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Franschhoek Literary Festival programme<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, which is surprising this year in having workshop titles that do not adequately describe what content will be covered in the one-hour sessions, many being very vague. \u00a0Writing on blogs, and Social Media in general, are not covered at all! \u00a0Surprising too is that there is no link in any way to Cape Town hosting World Design Capital 2014. \u00a0Some of the better known writers\/speakers are:<\/p>\n<p>* \u00a0 Thomas Keneally, Australian writer of &#8216;<em>Schindler&#8217;s List<\/em>&#8216;, which became an award-winning movie made by Steven Spielberg.<\/p>\n<p>* \u00a0 Arthur Goldstuck, an IT expert, on a panel about &#8216;<em>Technovations&#8217;<\/em>, with no description, and other panelists unknown!<\/p>\n<p>* \u00a0 Pieter-Dirk Uys, on a number of panels, including &#8216;<em>Cape playwrights strut and fret&#8217;<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>* \u00a0 Tony Leon, on a number of panels, including <em>&#8216;Mbeki in Hindsight<\/em>&#8216; and &#8216;<em>Politicians between the lines<\/em>&#8216;.<\/p>\n<p>* \u00a0 Poet Adam Small<\/p>\n<p>* \u00a0 Funny but not-so-nice Marianne Thamm, on a number of panels including &#8216;<em>Braving Africa&#8217;<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>* \u00a0 Dr Michael Jordaan, former CEO of FNB, Chairman of Mxit, and recently appointed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wine-news\/michael-jordaan-new-chairman-of-wines-of-south-africa-wosa\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Chairman of Wines of South Africa (WOSA)<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, on a number of panels, including &#8216;<em>Business Bundu Bashes&#8217;<\/em> and &#8216;<em>Whither the Economy?<\/em>&#8216;<\/p>\n<p>* \u00a0 Tim Noakes, on a panel entitled &#8216;<em>Chewing the Fat<\/em>&#8216;!<\/p>\n<p>* \u00a0 Lindiwe Mazibuko, who has just resigned as Parliamentary Leader of the DA, on a panel debating &#8216;<em>Past Tense\/Future Imperfect&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>* \u00a0 Poet Breyten Breytenbach, speaking on &#8216;<em>The Poet as Novelist<\/em>&#8216;.<\/p>\n<p>* \u00a0 Andr\u00e9 Brink, speaking on &#8216;<em>Literary Doyen&#8217;<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>* \u00a0 Judge Edwin Cameron, on a panel discussing &#8216;<em>Subject Judice<\/em>&#8216;<\/p>\n<p>* \u00a0 Archbishop Desmond Tutu, speaking in a panel about &#8216;<em>Forgiveness<\/em>&#8216;.<\/p>\n<p>* \u00a0 Martin Welz, editor of <strong>Noseweek<\/strong>, on a panel &#8216;<em>It is news to me&#8217;<\/em>!<\/p>\n<p>* \u00a0 Reg Lascaris and John Hunt, co-owners of the original Hunt Lascaris (now TBWA Hunt Lascaris), on &#8216;<em>The Subtle seduction of Advertising&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>* \u00a0 Cartoonist Zapiro (Jonathan Shapiro), on a &#8216;<em>Rocking the Boat&#8217;<\/em> panel with Marianne Thamm and Tony Leon.<\/p>\n<p>Entertainment includes the following:<\/p>\n<p>* \u00a0 Pieter-Dirk Uys: \u00a0&#8216;<em>And then there was Madiba&#8230;<\/em>&#8216; on Friday and Saturday evening<\/p>\n<p>* \u00a0 Christopher Duigan (with Joanne Frankel and Albie van Schalkwyk in some of the concerts) : &#8216;<em>Mostly Mozart<\/em>&#8216; at the NG Church on Friday evening, Saturday morning and Sunday morning, as well as at Caf\u00e9 BonBon on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>* \u00a0 Malcolm Gooding: &#8216;G<em>oing Gooding<\/em>&#8216; play on Saturday evening.<\/p>\n<p>* \u00a0 Jenny Crwys-Williams dinner at Pierneef\u00a0\u00e0 La Motte on Saturday evening.<\/p>\n<p>* \u00a0 Opening of art exhibition at is art on Huguenot Road at 11h00 on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Despite being difficult to deal with, and having a poor ability to accept feedback as an accommodation provider to the Festival in the past seven years and as a Festival attendee, Festival Director Jenny Hobbs must be saluted for the hard work she and her team have put into \u00a0creating the Franschhoek Literary Festival, and in making it an event that sells out Franschhoek over this popular weekend. \u00a0Hobbs has announced that she is retiring from the Festival in July, to allow her to return to writing full-time. \u00a0Ann Donald, former journalist, including editor of <strong>Fair Lady<\/strong>, and former owner of Kalk Bay Books, will take over the running of the Franschhoek Literary Festival.<\/p>\n<p><strong>POSTSCRIPT 17\/5<\/strong>: \u00a0Lindiwe Mazibuko has cancelled her attendance at the Literary Festival in the eleventh hour.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Franschhoek Literary Festival,<\/strong>\u00a0Franschhoek, 16 &#8211;
