* \u00a0 The Nobel Peace Summit<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, which was due to be held in Cape Town on 13 – 15 October, has been called off and moved to Rome, a major shame for our city, given the valuable international media coverage it would have generated for our city. Now it is associated with negative headlines. \u00a0Nobel laureates were due to meet in the city, but started cancelling their attendance when the Dalai Lama was refused a visa by our Department of Home Affairs! \u00a0Past President FW de Klerk, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and Mayor Patricia de Lille have slammed the government’s decision.<\/span><\/p>\n

* \u00a0Noble is the donation of the R250 million<\/strong><\/a> penalty plus interest which Mark Shuttleworth has been refunded by the Reserve Bank, after winning a court case about an exit levy Shuttleworth had to pay when he moved his monies abroad after selling his verification company Thawte. The Court found the levy to be unconstitutional. The monies will be put into a trust to pay for South Africans who face the government in Constitutional Court cases, and are unable to afford to do so!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

* \u00a0 British Airways is adding a third daily flight between London and Cape Town from 2 – 10 January (received via e-mail from Michael Mackenzie)<\/p>\n

* \u00a0The Flybrary has been set up at Cape Town International<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, allowing passengers to donate their read books and to select a new one for their next journey. \u00a0It is the first such airport library in the world, and was established to assist the airport in improving its ambiance score, which has been low in the past.<\/span><\/p>\n

* \u00a0 Magnum Cream Liqueur has won a Gold Medal at the 2014 San Francisco World Spirits Awards. \u00a0It is made from Benriach Distillery Single Malt whisky and Dutch cream. \u00a0Close to 1500 entries from 64 countries were received.
